KUYKENDALL, Jesse
Unit:12 USCHA Private - 12th Regiment - Heavy Artillery, Company
D Organized at Camp Nelson, KY July 15, 1864. Service:
Garrison duty in District of Kentucky at Bowling Green, Camp
Nelson, etc. until April 1866.
Son, Jesse, died from smallpox contracted
in the service on, or about, 1886 July 10th. He had enlisted 1865 April 21 at Bowling Green, KY.
Jesse was born in Butler County, KY and, until the freedom of our race,
Jesse was considered the property of John Kuykendall.
I first belonged to Mr. John Martin, and at the age of 11 years, I was sold to
Mr. John Kuykendall. I was never known by any other name other than Martin and
Kuykendall. I have not remarried since the death of my husband
(between 1880 and 1883)
When Jesse, my son, enlisted, he was 16 years of age, and his occupation was that
of a farmer and common laborer. He was a slave and was never owned by any one except
Mr. John Kuykendall and his family.
