WORTHINGTON'S World Wide!
From the book called: Thomas Worthington, Father of Ohio Statehood by Alfred Byron Sears, it states the following:
"The motto of the Worthington family of Cheshire, England, was Virtute dignus avorum (In virtue worthy of ones ancestors). Each branch of the thirteenth-century Lancashire family of William de Worthington inheritied not only the motto but a coat of arms: Argent- three shakeforks, sable, two and one; crest a goat passant, argent, holding in his mouth an oak branch proper (or vert) , fructed, or; which, translated, means a silver shield with three black, triple-tined stable forks, one below and two above; the crest, a side veiw of a silver goat, holding in it's mouth a green leafed oak branch with golden acorns. This motto and coat of arms may be seen in Chorley Church, Wilmslow parish, Cheshire, (England). |  |
From the History of Bucks County, p. 559, it states:
The name Worthington is derived from the locality whence the family came. Its etymolgy is three saxon words. "Wreath in ton" that is. "Farm in town". Twenty miles notheast of Liverpool in Leyland hunderd, parish of Standish, county of Lancaster, England is the town WORTHINGTON. Here and in the adjacent manors resided the family of Worthington for many generations, being established, from the time of the Plantagenets, in high repute. The main stock can be traced in the publich archives back to Worthington de WORTHINGTON, in the reign of Henry III, 1236-1237, who was the progenitor of all the Worthingtons of Lancshire. The old Hall of Worthington, where the family lived for seven hundred years, was pulled down less than fifty years ago.
"In the early part of the eighteenth century, there was resident in Byberry, Phildelphia County, Pennsilvania, three brothers, John, Thomas and Samuel WORTHINGTON, said to have been natives of Lancshire. The date fixed by tradition of their arrival is 1705, but since at that date they were mere children, it is probable they were accompanied by parents, or the date of their arival is incorrectly given."
