The Numbering System

This site uses the National Genealogical Society Quarterly numbering system, also known as the modified Register System.

Each family member receives a unique number. The earliest ancestor is number 1. His children are numbered from 2 on. (Spouses do not receive a number). The numbers continue with the children of the eldest child, then the children of the second child. Then the numbering continues with the fourth generation.

Next to the first name of each ancestor is a superscript number indicating the generation. After that name are given the names of that individual's ancestors with their generation numbers. Click on their hyperlinked names to go back to a preceding generation.

Children are listed in birth order by lower case Roman numeral.

A "+" appears next to the name of any individual with descendants. Click on the hyperlinked name to go to the next generation.

For example:

Marie Blanche3 McGowan (Elizabeth 2 Blaney, James D1.) was born 11 March 1868 in Buffalo.

Marie Blanche McGowan and Augustus Otto Goetz had the following children:

+ 49 i. Katherine J. Goetz was born 18 June 1893 in Buffalo.
+ 50 ii. Augustus O. Goetz was born in Buffalo on 3 October 1897.
