Timothy Shattuck and Sarah DeWaters

Timothy Shattuck was born in New York c. 1805-1810, the son of David Shattuck and Orra Merwin. [1] Although there is no direct evidence of his parentage, a strong circumstantial case, based on close ties between Timothy and two known sons of David -- Stephen and Martin -- can be made for placing him in the family of David Shattuck:

Timothy married Sarah "Sally" Dewaters, probably c. 1832, based on the age of his eldest child, Cynthia, born c. 1833. Sally DeWaters was born c. 1813 in New York. [7] Just as in Timothy's case, no direct evidence exists indicating Sally's parentage, but indirect evidence suggests that she was the daughter of Jeremiah DeWaters and his wife Cynthia:

Timothy and his family first appear in the 1840 census in Hannibal, where he was engaged in agriculture. His household included one male under 5 (Homer), one male 30-40 (himself) one female under five (Cynthia), one 5-10 (Lucy), and one female aged 30-40 (Sally.) [16] Hannibal is on the Western border of Granby, where Timothy was living with his father in 1820. [17] Brother Stephen was settled in Hannibal in 1830, and Timothy and brother-in-law Frederick Smith had joined them in 1840. [18] Where Timothy was residing in 1830, after his father's death and before his own marriage, is unknown.

Timothy purchases two plots of land in Hannibal. He purchased, for $35, 2 3/4 acres from William W. Brackett in a deed signed 1 March 1841 and recorded on 11 September of that same year. [19] Brother Stephen purchased an adjoining 6 1/2 acres from William W. Brackett in a deed of the same date, although this deed refers to Timothy's purchase as "land formerly conveyed to Timothy Shattuck" indicating that the actual transfer may have occurred earlier. [20] Similarly, a deed dated 7 September 1840 and also recorded on 11 September 1841 in which, for the consideration of $74, Stephen sold Timothy 1/2 acre of the land he is recorded as purchasing from William Brackett in the following year! This deed, too, refers to "a piece of land deeded by Mr. W. Brackett to Timothy Shattuck." This must have been a choice piece of land, as the cost of this half acre was twice that of the 2 3/4 acres Timothy had purchased earlier. [21] This half acre may have possessed improvements such as a house or barn.

Timothy financed his second purchase via a mortgage from Stephen for $67.76 on both his properties, signed the same day he purchased Stephen's half acre. Timothy was to make two equal payments due in October 1842 and October 1843. Stephen seems to have been generous in his terms, as the mortgage was not satisfied until 11 November 1845. Timothy signed the mortage agreement, but Sally made her mark, suggesting that she was not literate. [22]

By 1850 Timothy had died, as Sally was living alone with the children in Hannibal. She owned real estate worth $100; the value suggests it is the same land Timothy had purchased in the 1840-41 transactions. No occupation is given for her; she may have rented out her land to a local farmer and lived on the proceeds. [23] In February 1852 petition was made to the Surrogate Court in Cayuga County that Thomas Ogden be appointed guardian for the property of the four children, suggesting that Sally had recently died. [24] She does not appear in the 1855 census for Hannibal. [25]

Timothy Shattuck and Sarah DeWaters had the following children:

i. Cynthia A. Shattuck was born was born 30 May 1833 in New York. [26]
ii. Lucy Shattuck was born in New York on 18 March 1836. [27]
+ iii. Homer Leroy Shattuck was born 9 May 1839 in Hannibal, Oswego Co. NY. [28] By 1860 he had relocated to Colesville, in Broome Co. NY, where he was working as a farm laborer and had a personal property worth $150. [29] He was then married to Sabrina Ann Dean, born in Colesville c. 1840, the daughter of Jonathan Dean, a substantial farmer, and Amanda Mattoon. [30] By 870 Homer had acquired real estate worth $1200 and personal property valued at $500. [31] The Leading Citizens of Broome County states that Sabrina died at around the age of forty. [32] The 1880 census showed Homer living with a new wife, Olive, born in New York. Homer was still working as a farmer in Colesville. [33] Olive Weeks was born in July 1861. Homer and Olive married c. 1879, and had only one child, Philemon, born in February 1887. In 1900 they still resided in Colesville, where Homer owned his farm free and clear of mortgage. [34] Homer continued to farm there in 1910, despite his increasing age, but by 1920 he and Olive had moved in with their son, H. P. Shattuck, now living in Red Creek, Wayne Co. NY, where their son, now married, had a "muck farm." [35] Homer died of asthma at the age of 83 in Wolcott, Wayne Co. NY on 18 February 1923. He is buried in the North Wolcott Cemetery. [36] Olive then moved to Binghamton, Broome Co. NY where she died in October 1938. She was buried in the North Wolcott cemetery on 28 October 1838. [37]
+ iv. Hattie E. Shattuck was born 30 April 1842 in New York. [38]
