Joseph Barrett and Family

Joseph Barrett was born c. 1734. The date was derived from his age at death in 1808, from a private record consulted by the compilers of the Vital Records of Sturbridge. [1]

Joseph was first married to Anna, born c. 1737. The couple had two children, born during their residence in Dudley, Worcester Co. MA. She died in Dudley on 23 September 1765, at the age of 28 and is buried in Quinebaug cemetery. [c]

Joseph was married to Abigail [2], born sometime before 1755. [3]

In 1790 the first United States census found Joseph Barrett living in Sturbridge, Worcester Co. MA. His household contained two free white males aged 16 years and upwards, and one under the age of sixteen. The two adult males would be Joseph and his son Joseph, Jr; the younger male would be son Ebenezer. The household also contained four free white females. One of these would be wife Abigail, suggesting that Joseph and Abigail had three daughters. [4] In 1800 they were still located in Sturbridge, and had a free white female aged 26-44 living with them, possibly an unidentified unmarried daughter. [5]

Joseph died in Sturbridge at the age of 74 on 1 October 1808 (the private records consulted by the compilers of the Vital Records of Sturbridge gave the date as 30 September). Abigail followed six years later, dying of fever on 22 September 1814. [6]

Joseph Barrett and Anna had the following children:

i. Joel Barrett, born in Dudley, Worcester Co. MA on 16 May 1762. [a]
ii. Ebenezer Barrett, born in Dudley on 28 August 1765. [a]

Joseph Barrett and Abigail had the following children:

iii. Molley Barrett, born in Dudley, Worcester Co. MA on 12 September 1766. [a]
iv. Miriam Barrett, born in Dudley on 8 May 1769. [b] Miriam married Jeremiah Morse in Sturbridge on 25 January 1789. [d]
v. Joseph Barrett was born in Sturbridge, Worcester Co. MA on 19 January 1772. [7] On 3 March 1799 he married Chloe Vinton, of Dudley, Worcester Co. MA. [8] Joseph died in November 1806, at the age of 36, a month after his father passed away (the records of the Baptist church give his death date aas 12 November; private records indicate his death took place on the 11th). [9] After his death his widow moved back to Dudley and in 1815 remarried, to Ezekiel Robbins of Sturbridge. [10]
+ vi. Ebenezer Barrett was born in Sturbridge on 5 June 1777. [11]
