First Generation

1. James D. ESTES was born circa 1786.¹ He married Eunice WILLIAMS, daughter of Nimrod WILLIAMS and Christiana GRIFFIN.^2,3 He died on 27 Dec 1851 in Washington County, Texas.⁴ He was born in Tennessee or Virginia, was in Missouri by 1820 (where he worked in silver mines), and moved to Texas after 1825. He was an early resident of Fort Bend County, Texas. He died from yellow fever during an epidemic. His probate estate was valued at more than $7,000.^5,6

Eunice WILLIAMS^{7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15} died before 1851.^16,17 She must have died before her husband's death in late December 1851, as she does not appear to be listed as an heir to his estate.¹⁸

Second Generation

2. Edmund T. ESTES (James)⁴¹ (pictured at left--portrait courtesy of Tammy Van Horn) was born in 1816 in Virginia.^42,43 He married Margaret Jane MCDOWELL, daughter of William MCDOWELL and Margaret Mary CAMPBELL, on 21 Sep 1846 in Washington County, Texas.^44,45,46 He married Sarah Ann MCDOWELL, daughter of William MCDOWELL and Margaret Mary CAMPBELL, on 17 Nov 1853 in Washington County, Texas.^47,48 He died on 6 Nov 1886 in Nolan Valley, Bell County, Texas.^49,50 He was buried in McDowell Cemetery, Nolan Valley, Bell County, Texas.⁵¹ His two wives were sisters. He and his second wife moved onto 700 acres in Nolan Valley, Bell County, Texas that he bought from her father in December 1856 for $2,100. There they farmed and raised stock. Indians attacked and burned the first house, probably a log cabin, and in 1859 the family replaced it with a limestone house, "Valley Home." In 1858 they donated land for a community church and the McDowell Cemetery in Nolan Valley. He and his family were Baptists and members of the Nolan Valley Church, and he served as a messenger to the Baptist Association in 1868.⁵²

Margaret Jane MCDOWELL^53,54,55 was born circa 1828 in Ireland^56,57 and died in Jan 1851 in Washington County, Texas.^58,59 Family tradition is that she was born on a ship bound from Ireland to America while still in Irish waters. She died of yellow fever.⁶⁰

Josephine Bonapart ESTES (James)⁹⁴ was born on 26 Jun 1823 in Missouri.⁹⁵ She married Thomas Johnson HUNTER, son of Johnson Calhoun HUNTER and Mary Martha HARBERT, on 12 Oct 1854 in Fort Bend County, Texas.^96,97 She died on 1 Apr 1881 in Fort Bend County, Texas, at age 57.⁹⁸ She was buried in Hunter family cemetery, Fort Bend County, Texas.⁹⁹ The old Hunter family cemetery where she and her husband are buried is on land that now is prison property.¹⁰⁰

Thomas Johnson HUNTER^101,102 was born on 7 Mar 1821 in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio.¹⁰³ He died on 30 Mar 1900 in Fort Bend County, Texas, at age 79.¹⁰⁴ He was buried in Hunter family cemetery, Fort Bend County, Texas.¹⁰⁵

Mayberry Ancil FULLER^328,329 was born on 28 May 1854 in Smith County, Texas.^330,331 He died on 6 Jan 1941 in Nolan Valley, Bell County, Texas, at age 86.^332,333 He was buried in McDowell Cemetery, Nolan Valley, Bell County, Texas.³³⁴ He was a member of the Nolan Valley Baptist Church in Bell County, Texas, where he farmed. He donated land to enlarge the McDowell Cemetery and for the McDowell school and was a board member of the McDowell school.³³⁵

Benjamin McCullough ESTES (Edmund, James)^396,397 was born on 5 May 1862 in Nolan Valley, Bell County, Texas.^398,399 He married Franklyn Jody Jackson on 19 Nov 1899 in Berea, Bell County, Texas.⁴⁰⁰ He died on 12 Jun 1912 in Nolan Valley, Harris County, Texas, at age 50.^401,402 He was buried in McDowell Cemetery, Nolan Valley, Bell County, Texas.^403,404 He was a farmer and stock raiser and a member of the Baptist Church. He died of a tarantula bite.⁴⁰⁵
