Some of Mollie CLOPTON's lines can be traced back nine generations.

In the chart below, a person's father has a number that is twice the child's number and a person's mother has a number that is one number higher than the child's father's number.  Thus the father of number 2 is number 4 and the mother of number 2 is number 5.

Mollie Clopton

First Generation

1. Mary Hester ('Mollie') CLOPTON (pictured above--and on a separate page in a family photograph made circa 1896) ) was born on 28 Nov 1850 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee.1,2,3,4 She married Jesse Marshall ('J. M.') BARTLETT in Navarro County, Texas on 20 Mar 1872.  She died on 26 Jan 1928 in Rice, Navarro County, Texas, at age 77.5,6,7,8 She was buried in Rice, Navarro County, Texas.9 Her mother died a few days after she was born, and her father had not remarried in Tennessee.   Her uncle, John Clopton, had moved to Chatfield, Texas, and at about age six she came from Tennessee by stage coach to live with him south of Rice until her father joined them.

Second Generation

Benjamin Michaux Clopton

2. Benjamin Michaux CLOPTON10 (pictured above) was born on 1 Oct 1828 in Wilson County, Tennessee.11,12,13,14 He died on 7 Apr 1900 in Navarro County, Texas, at age 71.15,16 He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.17 In 1850 he was working as a tailor in Rutherford County, Tennessee. He opened the first drug store in Rice, moving there from Chatfield about 1872, when the railroad reached Rice. In late April or early May 1862 he enlisted at Springfield, Texas as a private in Company B, Nelson's Regiment, Texas Infantry. He was captured 11 Jan 1863, was hospitalized at Petersburg, Virginia until April, and was exchanged 5 May 1863. The 1870 census for Navarro County, Texas describes him as a merchant and values his real property at $4,000 and his personal property at $300; it indicates the family was living near Chatfield.

64. William CLOPTON.58 It appears that he emigrated from England to York County, Virginia by 1673 and made at least three trips from England. In 1682 he was constable of Hampton Parish in that county. A 1682 deed of gift included "a negro man named Peter and one Black Cow named Blackbird with all her increase" to "my well beloved Daughter Ann Clopton" and "one Bay Mare named Tib, with all her increase and one Brindled Cow named Strawberry, with all her increase" to "my wellbeloved daughter Elizabeth Clopton." By May 1694 William and Ann were in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia, where he was vestryman. He may have continued as such for more than thirty years, for in April 1728 he declined the offer of vestryman "being very aged and not of ability to attend on Vestrys." He was dead by 12 Jul 1733, when his heirs made a claim to an estate left William by William Hammond in England. "Gent." often appeared after his name, indicating that he was of the gentry. The Clopton family has been described as of artisan stock in England that rose to be part of Virginia's "upper elite" of the late Seventeenth and early Eighteenth Centuries.59 He was buried in Saint Peter's Church, New Kent County, Virginia. He was born circa 1655 in County Essex, England. He died between 1728 and 1733 in New Kent County, Virginia.

He left Holland for London 8 May 1701. In 1705 he obtained a patent for 574 acres on the south side of the James River, on both sides of Manakintowne Creek, in Virginia. In 1713 he was granted a patent for 850 acres on the south side of the James, in Henrico County, "in consideration of the importation of nine persons, to dwell within our Colony of Virginia." In 1715 he received a patent for 230 acres in Henrico County.71,72

71. Susanne ROCHET was baptized on 13 Apr 1667.73 She died circa Dec 1744 in Goochland County, Virginia.74 She was named for Suzanne Rondeau, her grandmother and godmother. This interesting story is taken from Gene Carlton Clopton's The Ancestors and Descendants of William Clopton . . . (1984), in which (at p. 237) it is quoted from Baird's Huguenot Emigration to America, Vol. II, Ch. VIII, p. 108 ("The Revocation of 1686"): "From Sedan, France also came Susanne Rochet, who afterwards married one of the French refugees and came to Virginia. Susanne was the youngest of three daughters, the eldest of whom was sixteen years of age at the time of the Revocation 1681-1686. Their home was repeatedly visited by the priests, who questioned the children, seeking to find some occasion for sending them to a Roman Catholic school. At length, their father determined, if possible, to send the eldest daughter out of the Kingdom; and accordingly put her under the care of a niece, who with her infant child, was about to set out for the nearest sea-port, hoping to escape into Holland. On the journey, while crossing a small stream, the mother stumbled on some rocks. The child cried out. A party of soldiers were stationed at a mill near by, and roused by the sound came forth, captured the woman and took them to prison. Her father was finally allowed to bring his daughter home. The second attempt to escape was more fortunate and he succeeded in sending his two eldest daughters to Amsterdam. The youngest, Susanne, was afterwards forwarded to her sisters; concealed in a hogshead, and committed to a friendly sea-captain. The family remained in Holland until after the marriage of the eldest daughter, who removed to the West Indies. Susanne Rochet became the wife of Abraham MICHAUX, a Huguenot who ultimately settled in Virginia."75,76
