4. Capt. Thomas CALLAWAY Sr. (Joseph, Joseph) was born on 12 Oct 1712.2 He married Mary BAKER in 1735.3,4 He died in Feb 1800 in Ashe County, North Carolina, at age 87.5,6,7 He was
buried in Callaway Cemetery, West Jefferson, Ashe County, North Carolina.8His brothers moved into what is now Bedford
County, Virginia in the mid 18th Century, but Thomas did not, living instead in Halifax
and Pittsylvania Counties before moving to the New River in what then was Surry County,
North Carolina. later became Wilkes County, and now is Ashe County. He and some of his
sons had moved to the Greenville and Pendleton Districts of South Carolina by 1790, but
some of them had returned to Wilkes County by 1796. One source states that he was born in
1700 and lived to age 100. From The Callaway Journal, vol. 1 (1976), p. 25:
"It is told that Capt. Thomas [Callaway] and Daniel Boone were quite good
friends and one day, while hunting near Calloway's home, Boone killed a deer. The deer
fell across a long gray stone which Boone set up against a chestnut tree. Later, Capt.
Calloway saw the stone and was so fascinated with it that Boone brought it to his home and
carved upon it the initials, 'T.C.' So pleased was he that Calloway wanted it for a
headstone at his grave, and there it was erected upon his death in 1800." In 1755 he
was a captain in the Colonial Troops from Halifax County, Virginia in the French and
Indian War, and in 1780 he and some of his sons participated in the Battle of Kings
Mountain in the American Revolution.9

County, Virginia, and was a justice of the peace and officer of the county militia there,
until moving to Boonesborough, Virginia (now Kentucky). In a biography of Daniel Boone by John Mack Faragher, Richard is described as "officious, bad
tempered, and a bit of a blue blood." He was killed by Indians as he worked with his
slaves near Boonesborough; his body was scalped, mutilated, and rolled into a mud hole.12
8. James C. CALLAWAY (Joseph, Joseph) married Sarah BRAMLETT.13 He died circa 1767 in Bedford
County, Virginia.14He has been
described as "the least prominent of the brothers and a modest planter with no
slaves, scanty stock and a log cabin was home to his large family." All of his

it may have been Farrar, Saunders (or Sanders), or Shadrack, as those names seem to have
first appeared in the Callaway family after her marriage. She died at the home of son
John, evidently having lived the last part of his life with him.32

He married Sarah HARDIN, daughter of William HARDIN and Sarah BLEDSOE, on 25 Jan 1799 in North Carolina.38 He was
buried in Cass County, Missouri.39
He died on 29 Oct 1848 in Cass County, Missouri (near present Peculiar),
at age 75.40,41In 1800 he was selected as one of the original representatives
to the North Carolina House of Commons, representing Ashe County, was elected senator in
1803, and served several senate terms thereafter. He also served Ashe County as a justice
of the peace. He followed his father and brother James to Knox County, Tennessee in 1811,
and the 1812 tax rolls attributed 160 acres and one slave to him; by 1826 he owned 160
acres and seven slaves. His participation in the War of 1812 is unclear--he may have been
in charge of shipping provisions down the Tennessee River--but after the war he was known
as "Major Callaway." He was elected sheriff of Knox County in 1814 and served
successive terms until 1826, when he was appointed U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District
of Tennessee, a position he occupied until about 1830. His mother, who died in 1823, lived
with him for her last few years. In 1827 he moved to the Sweetwater Valley in Monroe
County, Tennessee, south of present Philadelphia, and there built the first brick house in
the area. In 1842, at age 69, John moved to the part of Van Buren County, Missouri, that
is now Cass County, with most of his children and their families, sister-in-law Rebecca
Hodges and her husband, and brother James and some of his children. He lived there another
six years, until his death at his home near present Peculiar, Missouri. His estate
included 330 acres and about $7,000 in personalty, including eighteen slaves. He was
active in the Baptist Church. He and Sarah had fourteen children, of whom eleven reached
adulthood.42

53. She and Samuel Henderson were married in what is now Boonesborough, Kentucky in a
ceremony at which Daniel Boone, acting under his appointment as a
magistrate of Transylvania, officiated. Her father permitted the marriage on the condition
that Samuel put up a bond that "he would have the marriage solemnized by less dubious
authority at the earliest opportunity." Their son Alfred said he often heard his
parents say that they were the first couple ever married in Kentucky and that his sister
Fanny was the first child born there after marriage. They moved from Kentucky to North
Carolina around 1780.
Samuel HENDERSON was born in North Carolina. He died
on 16 Dec 1816 in Warren County, Tennessee. He was a farmer. During the
American Revolution he raised a group of 100 men in Guilford and Rockingham Counties,
North Carolina and fought in the Battle of Guilford. His son Alfred described him as
5'10" or 6' tall, 200 pounds, "of great muscular powers & capable of
enduring very great fatigue."93

born between 1748 and 1753 in Albemarle County, Virginia.94 He married Jemima BOONE, daughter of Daniel BOONE and
Rebecca Bryan, circa 1777 in Boonesborough, Virginia.95 He died on 22 Feb 1829 in Warren
County, Missouri (near Marthasville).96,97He probably was born in the part of Albemarle
County, Virginia that now is Bedford County. He migrated to Kentucky in 1776 and was one
of the early settlers of Ft. Boonesborough. There he married Jemima in a double wedding
with his first cousin, Frances Callaway. In 1798 or 1799 he and Jemima
moved to what is now Warren County, Missouri, near Charette (now Marthasville), which then
was the western part of St. Charles County. While living there he traded in fur with
Daniel Morgan Boone, his brother-in-law, and William Lamme, his son-in-law, and trapped
beaver as far west as Nebraska. He and Jemima were founders of Friendship Baptist Church
in Charette. Flanders was a hard shell Baptist with strong religious convictions and was
close to his family throughout his life but preferred to hunt alone. He has been described
as tall, thin, and swarthy. At his death he owned ten slaves.98,99,100
Jemima BOONE. She was a daughter of Kentucky pioneer Daniel Boone.101 She was buried in David Bryan Cemetery, Warren County, Missouri (near Marthasville).102 She was born on 4 Oct 1762 in Rowan County, North Carolina.103
She died on 30 Aug 1834 in Warren County, Missouri (near Marthasville),

offices (such as deputy sheriff and tax collector), organized a group of Missouri Rangers,
and served as their captain in the War of 1812, which for them consisted mostly of
fighting Indians. He was killed in such a fight near the end of the war, at Loutre Creek.
Five years later the newly formed Callaway County, Missouri was named for him. They had
two sons and one daughter.117

farmer, is a son of Micajah Callaway, whose name is familiar to school children as a
celebrated Indian fighter and frontiersman, who was a close companion of Daniel Boone in
Kentucky, . . . When about four years old [John] came with his father to what is now
Washington County, Ind., which he has always considered his home. He was reared in the
backwoods to hard work and industry, and such has been his life's occupation, gaining,
thereby the old Callaway homestead and other lands, amounting in all to over 500 acres.
For the past few years he has retired from active work, and resides with two nephews who
manage his large farm. Mr. Callaway is one of the well known men of the county, is
enterprising, thorough going, and a Democrat."193,194
263. ii. Noble CALLAWAY was born on 15 Mar 1809 in Bourbon County, Kentucky.195,196 He married Martha Catherine NICHOLSON,
daughter of Benjamin NICHOLSON and Jemima Starr, on 22 Mar 1835.197,198 He died on 28
Dec 1884 in Indiana at age 75.199From an 1884 history of Washington County, Indiana: "Noble Callaway, son of
Micajah and Frankie (Hawkins) Callaway, . . . when one year old came with his parents to
this county, which has since been his home. Like the majority of pioneer boys, he had to
work hard, early and late, and received such advantages as only that primitive time
afforded. Accepting farming as his vocation through life, has steadily followed it, and by
his untiring exertions, has secured his wife . . . . Mr. and Mrs. Callaway are among
Washington County's best people . . "200

50. Chesley CALLAWAY (James, Joseph, Joseph) was
born in 1760 in Bedford County, Virginia.201 He married Christina GALLOWAY, daughter of John
GALLOWAY, in 1784 in Bedford County, Virginia.202 He died on 13 Feb 1846 in Ohio
County, Kentucky.203He served in the
Revolutionary Army on a campaign against the Cherokees, on the Long Island (Holstein
River) expedition against Indians, at Fort Boonesborough in Kentucky, in driving cattle to
Fort McIntosh, and at the Guilford, N.C. fight under General Greene. By 1789 he was in
Lexington, Kentucky, and he probably spent the rest of his life in the part of Hardin
County, Kentucky that became Ohio County, where he engaged in numerous land transactions.
In 1799 he bought 333 acres north of Rough River on North No Creek, about six miles from
Hartford, Kentucky. Although he sold off part of this tract, he seems to have remained on
the rest of it until his death. He farmed and apparently owned no slaves. He was
interested in politics and supported Andrew Jackson. The net value of his estate was
$89.91.204

St. Charles District of Missouri that became Lincoln County.210
268. ii. Zachariah CALLAWAY Sr was buried in Lincoln County, Missouri (near Old Alexandria).211 He was born in 1787 in Virginia.212 He married Phoebe CLEAVER, daughter
of James CLEAVER and Hannah Linn, on 7 Aug 1805 in Ohio County,
Kentucky.213,214 He married Jane EARLY in 1832.215,216 He died circa
Jan 1848 in Lincoln County, Missouri (near Old Alexandria).217,218In 1812 he and brother Chesley moved into the part of the St. Charles District of
Missouri that became Lincoln County.219
