Generation One
1. Lucien Lusk BARTLETT, seventh son and eleventh child of Jesse BARTLETT and Frances CALLAWAY, was born on 28 Nov 1829 in Illinois.1,2,3,4 He was barely two years old when the family arrived in Texas from Illinois in late 1831.4a He married Martha J. C. ("Mattie") RICHARDSON, daughter of Goin C. RICHARDSON and Nancy J. HARRISON, on 12 May 1852 in Navarro County, Texas.5,6 He died on 22 Dec 1892 in Kaufman County, Texas, at age 63.7,8,9 He was buried in Rader Cemetery, Kaufman County, Texas.10,11,12 He worked for a while as a surveyor in the area that is now Fort Worth, Texas but because of Indian harassment of his family while he was gone he moved to Chatfield and opened a dry goods store. While Lucien was in Shreveport buying goods, a competitor, who had a store a couple of miles down the Trinity River, burned down Lucien's store. The arsonist was lynched and Lucien moved to Van Zandt County, where he was a teacher and merchant and lived in Wills Point. He died of neck cancer.13,14,15 In 1860 he was a trustee of the Masonic and Odd Fellows Male and Female High School at Chatfield15a and, with more than two hundred others, signed a published call for a public meeting to discuss a course of action as Texas moved toward secession: "Lincoln is elected! and the doctrine of Negro Equality is about to be inaugurated in this Government. We, the undersigned, are unwilling to submit to this infamy and degradation, and we respectfully and earnestly call on every citizen to come forward and let us counsel and act together. There will be a meeting of the citizens of Navarro county, at Corsicana, on Saturday, the 24th of November, (to-morrow) 1860. Come all!15b"

Susan Clarinda PATE was born on 4 Feb 1860 in Cherokee County, Texas.40,41,42 She also married _____ WALLACE.43 She died on 14 Jan 1949 in Upshur County, Texas, at age 88.44 She was buried in Elm Grove Cemetery, Van Zandt County, Texas.45,46

Belle BARTLETT (Lucien) was born on 19 Sep 1856 in Chatfield, Navarro County, Texas.82,83,84,85 She married Anthony Wayne MEREDITH, son of Cyrus Bolivar MEREDITH and Georgia Ann REID, on 7 Apr 1880.86,87,88,89,90,91 She died on 1 Jul 1940 in Van Zandt County, Texas, at age 83.92,93,94 She was buried in White Rose Cemetery, Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas.95,96,97,98 She was salutatorian of her graduating class at Sam Houston State College in Huntsville, Tex., taught school in Athens, Wills Point, and Dallas, and attended the University of Chicago for two summer sessions. She studied piano and violin. For many years she was president of the White Rose Cemetery Association. She and her husband were members of the First Baptist Church in Wills Point, and both served several terms as school trustees.99,100
Anthony Wayne MEREDITH was born on 12 Sep 1847 in Waynesborough, Wayne County, Tennessee.101,102,103 He died on 28 Aug 1946 in Van Zandt County, Texas, at age 98.104,105,106 He was buried in White Rose Cemetery, Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas.107,108,109 He contracted dysentery during his Civil War service in the Georgia militia. After the war he worked on Grandmother Reid's plantation and taught school for a year in Tennessee. In December 1872 he left for Texas. During his first years in Texas he farmed and taught school in Van Zandt County. He was elected district clerk of Van Zandt County in 1878 and served for six years. He was appointed sheriff of Van Zandt County, Texas on 14 Jan 1885 after the incumbent died in office and apparently served about a year, declining to seek reelection because he did not like the job. In November 1886 he moved from Canton to Wills Point, thinking the relocation would improve his health. He was tax collector from 1890 to 1891, traveling by horse throughout the county to collect taxes, and was mayor of Wills Point from 1893 to 1896. He was in the real estate business, held a law license, was vice-president of Van Zandt County National Bank, was a 33d-degree Mason, and was active in the Confederate Veterans Association. He was known as Wayne.110,111,112,113

Lucien Dony BARTLETT (Lucien) was born on 12 Sep 1858 in Chatfield, Navarro County, Texas.157,158,159 He married Nellie May AYRES, daughter of Thomas Eli AYRES and Cornelia HAMPTON, on 19 Feb 1879.160 He died on 20 Mar 1922 in Wood County, Texas, at age 63.161,162 He was buried in City Cemetery, Mineola, Wood County, Texas.163,164 In 1887 he was hired by a Kaufman County, Texas school district to teach school for four months at $45 per month.165
Nellie May AYRES was born on 15 May 1863 in Warren, Bradley County, Arkansas.166 She died on 21 Sep 1950 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas, at age 87.167,168,169,170 She was buried in City Cemetery, Mineola, Wood County, Texas.171,172

Henry Fisher BLACKWELL Jr was born on 15 Jul 1859 in Canton, Van Zandt County, Texas.215 He died on 20 Jun 1944 in Van Zandt County, Texas, at age 84.216,217 He was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Canton, Van Zandt County, Texas.218 He was sheriff of Van Zandt County, Texas.

HARRIS and Pamelia Jane MCLEOD, on 7 Apr 1910.316,317,318 She died on 7 Aug 1956 in Van Zandt County, Texas, at age 70.319,320,321,322,323 She was buried in White Rose Cemetery, Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas.324,325 She was a long-time member of the Texas Poetry Society and wrote a history of Wills Point for the Texas centennial year, 1936.326
James Harbert ('Jim') HARRIS was born on 17 Nov 1878 in Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas.327,328,329,330 He died on 6 Dec 1946 in Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas, at age 68.331,332,333 He was buried in White Rose Cemetery, Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas.334,335 He grew up on the family farm and operated it for a few years. He attended the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas in 1896 and then operated a feed business and later a grocery. He was a captain in the Texas National Guard during World War I and then lived in Fort Worth for two years, where he managed the Exchange Restaurant. During the 1920s and early 1930s he was city marshal of Wills Point and Van Zandt County tax assessor and collector. After they lived in Gainesville and Longview for a short while, they returned to Wills Point in 1945 when he was appointed city marshal. He suffered a heart attack on the job and died at their home on Pecan Avenue later that day.336

PROVENCE and Sarah Elizabeth Light, on 8 Jul 1908 in Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas.355,356,357,358 She died on 30 Apr 1968 in Van Zandt County, Texas, at age 75.359,360,361,362 She was buried in White Rose Cemetery, Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas.363,364 They lived near the Merediths on Canton Hill in Wills Point. She held a B.A. from Baylor College and an M.A. from Southern Methodist University, taught English and Latin in Wills Point schools for many years, and was president of the White Rose Cemetery Association. They were members of the First Baptist Church in Wills Point.365,366,367
Dr. Thomas King PROVENCE was born on 25 Apr 1875 in Madison County, Alabama (near Huntsville).368,369,370,371,372 He died on 1 Jun 1973 in Van Zandt County, Texas, at age 98.373,374,375,376,377,378 He was buried in White Rose Cemetery, Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas.379,380 His family moved from near Huntsville, Alabama to Cedar Grove, Texas when he and his siblings were children and then moved to Grandbury, Texas, where both parents died when he was twelve. He and his siblings were separated and lived with different relatives. Tom lived for several years with the family of Dr. William C. Moughon in Wills Point. He moved to Greenville, Tex. as a young man and then returned to Wills Point, where he worked for Thompson and McKinney's dry goods store for several years before attending dental school in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a dentist for more than sixty years. They lived in Comanche, Belton, and Abilene but always returned to Wills Point. He was a kind and considerate man, with a good sense of humor, who entertained children with his stories and would sing and dance around the house before breakfast. When his sister was widowed with two young daughters, he brought them to his home, where they lived for many years. He wanted to see a man walk on the moon, which he did, and to live to age 100, which he missed by about two years.381,382

Nancy Caroline ("Carrie") BARTLETT (Lucien, Lucien) was born on 12 Mar 1881 in Kaufman, Kaufman County, Texas.406,407,408 She married David Elam WATERS on 20 Jun 1901 in Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto County, Texas.409,410,411 She died on 8 May 1966 in Eastland County, Texas, at age 85.412 She was buried in Cisco, Eastland County, Texas.413 She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cisco, Texas, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.414
David Elam WATERS was born on 2 Dec 1876 in Kaufman, Kaufman County, Texas.415 He died on 2 Aug 1949 in McLennan County, Texas, at age 72.416 He established the first bank in Terrell, Texas and in the early 1920's built the Cisco (Texas) Creamery Company.417
