First Generation

1. Leah¹ BARTLETT, first child of Nicholas BARTLETT and Mary MARTIN,^1,² was born in 1767 in Virginia,⁴ married Robert Daniel PEARCE, son of Jeremiah PEARCE and Deborah BROUWER, in 1790,⁵ died in 1861 in Logan County, Kentucky,⁶ and was buried in Shaker Cemetery, Shakertown (South Union), Logan County, Kentucky.⁷ She and her husband lived in Knox and Campbell Counties, Tennessee, then moved to Knox County, Kentucky about 1812, to Madison County, Illinois about 1819, to Sangamon County, Illinois in 1820, and to Logan County, Kentucky, where they died.³

Robert Daniel PEARCE^8,^9,¹⁰ was born on 22 Nov 1767 in Virginia,¹² died on 15 Sep 1846 in Logan County, Kentucky, at age 78,^13,¹⁴and was buried in Shaker Cemetery, Shakertown (South Union), Logan County, Kentucky.¹¹

Second Generation

2. James² PEARCE (Leah¹ BARTLETT)^40,⁴¹ was born on 4 Feb 1791 in Knox County, Tennessee.⁴² He married Lucinda ALLISON, daughter of Hugh ALLISON and Rebecca Hart SANDERS, on 10 May 1810 in Knox County, Kentucky.⁴³ He married Frances MARTIN, daughter of Christopher Columbus MARTIN and Anna TURNER, on 16 Feb 1837.⁴⁴ He died on 19 Nov 1864 in Olive Township, Madison County, Illinois, at age 73.⁴⁵ When he was about eight years old, his parents moved the family from Knox County, Tennessee to Campbell County, Tennessee. A few years later they moved to that part of Knox County, Kentucky that is now Whitley County. By 1815, he and his first wife, Lucinda, were settled in Madison County, Illinois.⁴⁶

Lucinda ALLISON^47,⁴⁸ was born on 6 Feb 1793.⁴⁹ She died on 7 Jun 1836 at age 43.⁵⁰

10. i. Hugh Allison³ PEARCE^51,⁵² was born on 13 Feb 1811 in Whitley County, Kentucky.⁵³ He married Susan (Susannah) CASON, daughter of Hillary CASON and Mary SMITH, on 30 Jul 1829 in Leef Township, Madison County, Illinois.⁵⁴ He died on 28 Oct 1850 in Louisiana (near Shreveport) at age 39.⁵⁵ He was buried in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana.⁵⁶ Theirs was the first marriage in Leef Township, Madison County, Illinois. He served in the 1831 Black Hawk War in Captain John P. Lawrence's Company of the Illinois Militia. By 1837 he and Susan were in Sevier County, Arkansas, where in 1838 he was appointed constable of Jackson Township. In the 1840 census of Sevier County he was listed as owning seventeen slaves. They had two children.⁵⁷

Joseph Bartlett PEARCE^58,⁵⁹ was born on 25 Apr 1820 in Madison County, Illinois.⁶⁰ He married Mary LAYNE, daughter of Benjamin LAYNE and _____ _____, on 17 Jun 1841 in Sevier County, Arkansas.^61,⁶² He died in 1861 in Caddo Parish, Louisiana.⁶³ He moved from Madison County, Illinois to that part of Sevier County, Arkansas that is now Little River County. Most likely he met and married Mary in Sevier County. It is believed that they moved to Caddo Parish, Louisiana and died near Shreveport. It also is believed that they had one child, a son, Montana PEARCE, who lived with James D. PEARCE in Bosqueville, Texas after his parents' deaths.⁶⁴

Robert Bartlett³ PEARCE (James², Leah¹ BARTLETT)^87,⁸⁸ was born on 10 Jan 1813 in Whitley County, Kentucky.⁸⁹ He married Ginsey CASON, daughter of Hillary CASON and Mary SMITH, on 14 Jun 1837 in Independence County, Arkansas.⁹⁰ He married Rebecca HOWELL on 13 Apr 1851 in Sevier County, Arkansas.⁹¹ He died on 30 Jun 1860 in Sevier County, Arkansas, at age 47.⁹² He was buried in Marvin Cemetery, Foreman, Little River County, Arkansas.⁹³

Ginsey CASON^94,⁹⁵ was born in 1817 in Georgia.⁹⁶ She died in Mar 1850 in Sevier County, Arkansas.⁹⁷ She was a sister of Susan CASON, the wife of her husband's brother, Hugh Allison PEARCE. She died of pneumonia.⁹⁸

They had seven children.¹⁴⁶

12. William Wriley³ PEARCE (James², Leah¹ BARTLETT)^150,¹⁵¹ was born on 20 Jun 1815 in Kentucky.¹⁵² He married Barbara Allen VINCENT, daughter of Isham VINCENT and Martha SMART, on 26 Jan 1834.¹⁵³ He died on 17 Nov 1888 at age 73.¹⁵⁴ He lived almost his entire life in Madison County, Illinois. At one time he had amassed more than 2,000 acres in Illinois, 400 acres in Missouri, and 900 acres in Arkansas. In 1858 he built a large brick home on Main Street in Alhambra, Illinois. He was a Mason and in 1884 was elected to the Illinois Legislature. He was a Southern Methodist.¹⁵⁵

35. ii. Martha Elizabeth PEARCE^165,¹⁶⁶ was born on 2 Feb 1841.¹⁶⁷ She married Joseph Pleasant STEPP, son of Solomon STEPP and Sophia A. GIBSON, on 4 Nov 1857 in Alton, Madison County, Illinois.¹⁶⁸ She died on 31 Jan 1873 at age 31.¹⁶⁹ They had six children.¹⁷⁰
36. iii. William Wriley PEARCE Jr^171,¹⁷² was born on 23 Sep 1842 in Madison County, Illinois (north of Alhambra).¹⁷³ He married Emily Elvira STEPP, daughter of Solomon STEPP and Sophia A. GIBSON, on 18 Nov 1862.¹⁷⁴ He married Mary F. BERSHAM, daughter of Jacob BERSHAM and _____ _____, on 20 Feb 1891 in Alhambra, Madison County, Illinois.¹⁷⁵ He died on 24 Sep 1925 at age 83.¹⁷⁶ He spent his entire life in Madison County, Illinois, with the exception of a few months spent in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He and Emily lived for several years on a farm a mile and a half north of Alhambra, Illinois before moving into Alhambra. They separated and eventually divorced. They had six children.¹⁷⁷
37. iv. Joseph Bartlett PEARCE^178,¹⁷⁹ was born on 10 Mar 1847.¹⁸⁰ He married Annie SHARP, daughter of Henry SHARP and Margaret J. MILLS, on 10 Oct 1878 in Saint Louis, Missouri.¹⁸¹ He died on 26 Nov 1937 in Greenville, Bond County, Illinois, at age 90.¹⁸² He was buried in Vincent Cemetery, Madison County, Illinois (north of Alhambra).¹⁸³ They lived for several years on a farm two and a half miles north of Alhambra, Illinois before moving into Alhambra. He raised thoroughbred horses and served in several public offices, including mayor of Alhambra for four terms. In November 1912 they moved to Greenville, Illinois. They had five children.¹⁸⁴
38. v. Louisa Josephine PEARCE^185,¹⁸⁶ was born on 14 Jul 1851 in Madison County, Illinois (north of Alhambra).¹⁸⁷ She married James Alonzo MATTHEWS, son of James MATTHEWS and Sarah Ann BOUGHNER, on 6 Mar 1869.¹⁸⁸ She died on 22 Nov 1869 at age 18.¹⁸⁹ She was buried in Vincent Cemetery, Madison County, Illinois (north of Alhambra).¹⁹⁰ She was accomplished in music and water color and was educated at Almira College, Greenville, Illinois. She died four days after the birth of their only child, James Alonzo MATTHEWS, Jr.¹⁹¹

13. Isaac Wiley³ PEARCE (James², Leah¹ BARTLETT)^192,¹⁹³ was born on 3 Dec 1817 in Madison County, Illinois.¹⁹⁴ He married Martha Smart VINCENT, daughter of Isham VINCENT and Martha SMART, on 8 Nov 1836.¹⁹⁵ He died in Oct 1854 in Jackson County, Arkansas, at age 36.¹⁹⁶ He was buried in Jackson County, Arkansas (near Newport).¹⁹⁷ About 1841 or 1842 they moved from Madison County, Illinois to Sevier County, Arkansas but in 1854 decided to move back to Madison County. He died near the end of the return trip, and she and the rest of the family settled in Madison County.¹⁹⁸

Martha Smart VINCENT^199,²⁰⁰ was born on 23 Mar 1821 in Olive Township, Madison County, Illinois.²⁰¹ She married William EAVES on 3 Oct 1867 in Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois.²⁰² She died in 1907 in Oklahoma.²⁰³ She lived with her second husband, William EAVES, in Marine, Illinois until he died. Sometime thereafter she moved to Alhambra, Illinois to live with her sister, Barbara PEARCE. She then moved to Clinton, Missouri and eventually to live with son David in Oklahoma.²⁰⁴

WESLEY in 1872 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.²⁶⁷ He married Marietta FIELD, daughter of Dr. Elijah Creel FIELD and Elvira BOWMAN, on 18 Dec 1888 in Walnut Springs, Bosque County, Texas.^268,²⁶⁹ He died on 5 Apr 1925 in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas, at age 78.^270,²⁷¹ He was buried in Meridian, Bosque County, Texas.²⁷² He had one child, a daughter, with his first wife, Columbia, and one child, another daughter, by his second wife, Nannie. Josephine Florence ('Josie') PEARCE^314,³¹⁵ was born on 23 Dec 1868 in Bosque County, Texas.³¹⁶ She married Thomas Benjamin COOPER on 8 Jul 1883 in Comanche County, Texas.³¹⁷ She died on 9 Jan 1938 at age 69.³¹⁸ She was a faithful Methodist and "one of the strongest and most respected and loved personalities in Fisher County [Texas]." She operated the family ranch after her husband's death. They had eight children.³¹⁹

Margaret Louise LATTIMORE was born on 28 Sep 1846 in Talladega, Talladega County, Alabama.³²⁰ She married George TIPTON in 1868.³²¹ She married Judson Cary JACKSON on 28 Sep 1879.³²² She died on 22 Aug 1922 in Bosque County, Texas, at age 75.³²³ She was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Walnut Springs, Bosque County, Texas.³²⁴

SNYDER, on 19 Oct 1892.³²⁸ She died on 10 Jan 1940 in Walnut Springs, Bosque County, Texas, at age 66.³²⁹ She was "a woman of many talents and left many beautiful pieces of art that she had painted over the years. She was a graceful dancer, and her granddaughter remembers how well she did 'Put your little foot' and other early dances. She was always interested in politics and kept a scrapbook of current events." They had three children.³³⁰
57. ii. Maud Adner PEARCE^331,³³² was born on 7 Nov 1876.³³³ She married John Milton WEBSTER, son of A. H. WEBSTER and _____ _____, on 22 Jul 1896.³³⁴ She died in 1963 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas.³³⁵ She was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Walnut Springs, Bosque County, Texas.³³⁶ They lived most of their married life in Waco, Texas, where he was associated with the Katy Railroad shops. They had one child.³³⁷

BOZARTH and _____ _____, on 13 Mar 1856.³⁵² He married Celina CHERRY in 1862.³⁵³ He died on 23 Mar 1889 in Alhambra, Madison County, Illinois, at age 59.³⁵⁴ He was buried in Olive-Pearce Cemetery, Madison County, Illinois.³⁵⁵ He practiced medicine in Woodburn, Illinois for five or six years and then moved his practice to Alhambra, Illinois in 1862. He then attended St. Louis Medical College (now Washington University), obtaining a medical degree in 1865, after which he returned to Alhambra. He was elected to the Illinois Legislature as a Democrat in 1876. He has been described as "physically strong, being six feet or more tall and weighing about 200 pounds," and "[e]ndowed by nature with perfect health. . . . He was somewhat stern at times in his manner but positive in his declaration and leaving no doubt as to his sincerity; he was full of compassion. His sympathy for the suffering was apparent. His kindness and tenderness to those in their sickness and suffering and distress and his consideration for those of slender means was always manifest." He was a Mason.³⁵⁶

Mary E. WARD was born on 23 Nov 1833.³⁵⁷ She died on 3 May 1853 at age 19.³⁵⁸ She was buried in Olive-Pearce Cemetery, Madison County, Illinois.³⁵⁹

He operated a drugstore from the early 1880s until they moved to Texas in 1887, and he was postmaster of Alhambra from 1885 to 1887. He operated a drugstore in Ballinger, Texas, was president and chairman of the board of the First National Bank in Ballinger, was a distributor of oil, gas, kerosene, and coal in Ballinger, and helped establish Ballinger's electric company, telephone company, and ice company. He and Annie were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Ballinger. They had one child.³⁷⁰

Celina CHERRY was born on 18 Mar 1842.³⁷¹ She died on 25 Jan 1877 at age 34.³⁷² She was buried in Olive-Pearce Cemetery, Madison County, Illinois.³⁷³

James³ PEARCE Jr. (James², Leah¹ BARTLETT)^401,⁴⁰² was born on 4 Apr 1834 in Saline Township, Madison County, Illinois.⁴⁰³ He married Temperance RICKS, daughter of Lewis RICKS and Mary ANDERSON, on 4 Dec 1851 in Madison County, Illinois.⁴⁰⁴ He married Margaret GUTHRIE on 6 Nov 1906 in Olympia, Thurston County, Washington.⁴⁰⁵ He died on 25 Jan 1914 in Oakland, Alameda County, California, at age 79.⁴⁰⁶ He was buried in Mt. View Cemetery, Oakland, Alameda County, California.⁴⁰⁷ In the latter part of his childhood his family lived in Olive Township, Madison County, Illinois, where he finished school. He and Temperance lived about four miles northwest of Staunton, Macoupin County, Illinois until 1857, in Wisconsin in 1857-1858, and in Madison County, Illinois from 1858 to 1881, when they moved to Prescott, Linn County, Kansas. He was a farmer and a Republic (in a family of Democrats) and was a justice of the peace in Kansas. He served as a private in Company H, 28th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry for one year from his enlistment on 8 Mar 1865. In 1911 they moved to Oakland, California. In addition to their five children, they adopted Marcella RYAN, who married William READ on 15 Mar 1887, and raised Lizzie VAN HOOSER, who married David A. HAUCK on 25 Dec 1891. He died of valvular heart disease.⁴⁰⁸

Temperance RICKS^409,⁴¹⁰ was born on 16 Sep 1833 in Trigg County, Kentucky.⁴¹¹ She died in 1904 in Houston, Harris County, Texas.⁴¹²

Joseph Curtis PEARCE was born on 11 May 1862 in Madison County, Illinois (near New Douglas).⁴²² He married Cora Belle KNOWLES, daughter of _____ KNOWLES and _____ HAMLEY, on 3 Dec 1890 in Olympia, Thurston County, Washington.⁴²³ He died on 17 Nov 1940 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, at age 78.⁴²⁴ He was buried in Poteet, Atascosa County, Texas.⁴²⁵ He attended the University of Kansas, taught school for a year in Kansas, and prospected for gold in Colorado. He met his future wife, Cora Belle KNOWLES, in Kansas, followed her and her family to Colorado, and abandoned his gold mining claim in Colorado to follow them to Washington. Although he taught school, it is said that he placed little value on education and did not allow his children to receive more than elementary schooling. He farmed in Olympia, Washington until 1910, when the family moved to Oakland, California, where he worked as a carpenter. The family lived in Australia after World War I (in which one of the sons was killed) until about 1924, when they returned to California and he took up building houses and selling real estate in the Oakland area. In 1929 he moved to Texas, leaving the family behind for good. He kept in touch with some of his children but, as might be expected, some of the other children were angry about his abandonment of their mother and did not communicate with him. Joseph and Cora had nine children.⁴²⁶

KEOWN and Polly Ann VINCENT, on 8 Apr 1858.⁴³⁵ He died on 21 Nov 1925 in Bond County, Illinois, at age 86.⁴³⁶ He farmed in Madison County, Illinois, starting with a farm of about forty acres and eventually owning more than 400 acres. He was a Democrat and represented Olive Township on the Madison County board of supervisors. He was described as "possessed with a pleasing personality" and a man who "had great respect for his fellow man" and "never had the enmity of man, woman, or child."⁴³⁷

Margaret Adeline KEOWN^438,⁴³⁹ was born on 7 Apr 1837.⁴⁴⁰ She died on 31 Mar 1871 at age 33.⁴⁴¹
