1. Juda Louisa BARTLETT was born on 10 Sep 1818 in Knox County, Tennessee,1,2 the fourth daughter and fifth child of Jesse BARTLETT and Frances CALLAWAY. 3 She married John C. NEILL on 6 Sep 1838 in Washington County, Texas.4,5,6 She married Thomas Ingles SMITH, son of Bird Bowker SMITH and Rhoda INGLES, in Navarro County, Texas.7,8,9 She married Clinton McKamy WINKLER, son of David Tate WINKLER and Lavinia Gates OWEN, on 24 Dec 1848 in Porter's Bluff, Navarro County, Texas.10,11,12,13 She died in Nov 1861 at age 43.14 She was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.15,16,16a She was six or seven years old when the family moved from Tennessee to Illinois and fourteen years old when they arrived in Texas in late 1831. Her marriage to her first husband, John C. Neill, was in a double ceremony with her sister, Nancy.17
John C. NEILL died in the early 1840s18 after he and Louisa obtained a divorce from the Congress of the Republic of Texas as signed by President Sam Houston on 23 Jul 1842.18a He probably was the John Neal who served in Henry Wax Karnes's Second Cavalry Regiment from 29 Feb to 30 Apr 1836, including participating in the Battle of San Jacinto on 21 Apr, and in Captain Hill's company from 30 Apr to 30 May 1836. He also may be the John C. Neal who lived in Washington-on-the-Brazos in 1836 and with several others agreed to rent for three months the building where the convention that declared Texas independence was to meet (on which the group defaulted).19,20

Thomas Ingles SMITH21,22 (thought
to be the person pictured at the left) was born on 30 May 1800 in Virginia.23 He married R. HOGSETT.24 He died on 30 Mar 1848 in 
Austin, Travis County, Texas, at age 47.25 He was born in Tennessee and moved to
Texas in 1836, after the Battle of San
Jacinto, to serve in the Army of the Republic of Texas. In 1842 he enlisted as a
private in a volunteer company and was wounded at the Battle of
Salado Creek on September 18. When the Somervell
expedition was announced the next month, he enlisted as a private in the South Western
Army, later was elected a third lieutenant, and stayed with the army until it reached the
Rio Grande; he then returned to San Antonio and thus avoided capture in the Battle of
Mier and subsequent possible execution in the "black bean
incident." The next year, 1843, at Gov. Sam Houston's direction,
he led the party that removed the state's archives and attempted to move them from Austin
to Houston in the unsuccessful Archive War.
Later that year he moved to a farm on Chambers Creek in what is now Ellis County, Texas.
He led a party that scouted for hostile Indians in the Wichita Mountains in 1844, and
likely was the Thomas Smith who served as a lieutenant in the Robertson County ranger
force for most of 1845. In the fall of 1845 he was a commissioner who negotiated peace
treaties with ten Indian tribes, the last Indian treaty of the Republic of Texas. In the
summer of 1846 he raised a volunteer company, Smith's Battalion of the Texas Mounted
Volunteers, which he later commanded as a major, that defended the western frontier
against Indian raids. His battalion mustered out of federal service on 17 Aug 1847, and he
returned home, probably to Navarro County, where he commanded a ranger company on Richland
Creek. His biography in The New Handbook of Texas states that he and "Mary
Louise (Bartlett) O'Neill, the widow of John C. O'Neill," had three children, but no
information on the children has been found. His biography in Annie Carpenter Love's History
of Navarro County states that he had a son, Thomas I. SMITH, who died in childhood and
was buried near what is now First Avenue in Corsicana.26,27,28 Click here to

Clinton McKamy WINKLER32 (pictured above) was born on 19 Oct 1821 in Burke County, North Carolina.33,34 He married Angelina V. SMITH, daughter of Bird Bowker SMITH and Rhoda INGLES, on 7 Jan 1864 in Richmond, Virginia.35,36,37,38 He died on 13 May 1882 in Austin, Travis County, Texas, at age 60.39,40 He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.41,42,43 His parents owned a small farm in North Carolina and moved to Indiana in 1835. He migrated to Texas at age 18 and settled in Franklin in July 1840, where he was deputy county clerk of Robertson County from 1840 until 1843, when he became clerk pro tem of the district court. The next year he was admitted to the bar in Robertson County in 1844 and was elected district clerk. He is said to have had a role in causing the 1st Texas Legislature to create Navarro County in 1846, is credited with sponsoring legislation to make Corsicana the county seat, and moved to the new county in 1847. He represented Robertson County in the House of Representatives of the 2d Texas Legislature. He practiced law during the 1850's and in 1861 joined half a dozen others in organizing the secession effort in the county. He commanded the Navarro Rifles, which became Company I, 4th Regiment, of Hood's Texas Brigade, the only Texas infantry unit in the Army of Northern Virginia under Gen. Lee. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, participated in campaigns in Tennessee, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. As a lieutenant colonel he was in command of the 4th Texas Infantry when it surrendered at Appomattox. After the Civil War he represented Navarro, Ellis, Hill, and Kaufman Counties in the 13th Texas Legislature and was elected one of the three judges of the Texas Court of Appeals, in which position he was serving when he died. He was grand master of the Texas Masonic lodge in 1870 and was state Democratic executive committee chairman and was active in party efforts to end Reconstruction. He and Louisa had three children, and he and Angelina, who was from Richmond, Virginia, had six children. He was a lifelong Methodist. Samuel Romulus

Williams) was born on 1 Mar 1846 in Montgomery County, Texas.120,121,122,123 He died on 1 Jan
1908 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, at age 61.124,125,126,127 He was buried in
Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.128
His parents and he moved to Navarro County, Texas in 1846, the year he was born, and he
was raised on a farm in the western part of the county, near the Dresden and Raleigh
communities. He served with Company I, 19th Texas Cavalry, in the Civil War. After
attending school in Alvarado for four years and reading law for a year and a half, he was
sworn in as a lawyer at Corsicana in October 1870. In 1870 or 1871 he was appointed county
attorney, but the "scalawag" governor, E. J. Davis, removed him for obstructing reconstruction. He was elected county judge of
Navarro County in 1876, the first under the post-Reconstruction state constitution;
represented Navarro County in the 16th Texas Legislature in 1879; became district judge in
1886; represented Johnson, Hill, Ellis, and Navarro Counties in the 21st Legislature in
1889 (but resigned before completing his term); and was an attorney for the Cotton Belt
and the Houston and Texas Central railroads. His wedding in 1872 was the first in the new
Methodist church. The family lived at 1325 West 13th St. in Corsicana. Cross Roads, a
western Navarro County town, was renamed Frost in his honor.129,130,131 Click here to go

His sister, Ola Corrinne, married Will BARTLETT, a second cousin of Cleo FROST, Guy's wife.
