First Generation

1. Esther BARTLETT, fifth daughter and sixth child of Nicholas BARTLETT and Mary MARTIN,^1,2 was born in 1783 in Virginia.³ She married John Beale HUNT, son of Simond HUNT and _____ Beale, in 1802 in East Tennessee.⁴ She died on 10 Sep 1857 in Bushnell, McDonough County, Illinois.⁵ She was buried in Aspen Grove Cemetery, near Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa.⁶ After living in Knox and Blount Counties, Tennessee, they set out for Illinois in 1812 but were compelled by Indian conflicts during the War of 1812 to stay for a while at a blockhouse in Kentucky, where their fifth child was born. They settled in Madison County, Illinois in 1812 or 1813, then moved to newly created Bond County about 1817, settling about four miles southwest of Greenville, near Hill's Fort, where five of their younger children were born. After living in southern Illinois for about twenty years, they moved to McDonough County, in western Illinois, in 1832 and to Burlington, Iowa in 1837, where they and their five sons settled on about 1800 acres that remained in the family for several generations thereafter. She died at the home of her son John.⁷

John Beale HUNT^8,9 was born on 2 Feb 1776 in Baltimore, Maryland.¹⁰ He died on 21 Feb 1850 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, at age 74.¹¹ He was buried in Aspen Grove Cemetery, near Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa.¹²

• 2. i. Lydia HUNT^13,14 was born on 23 Aug 1803 in Washington County, Tennessee.¹⁵ She married William POWERS in 1819.¹⁶ She married Robert Cock on 8 Sep 1826.¹⁷ She died in 1888 in Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa.¹⁸ She was buried in Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa.¹⁹
• 3. ii. Charles Wesley HUNT^20,21 was born on 25 May 1805 in Blount County, Tennessee.²² He married Eliza L. FOSTER, daughter of Constantine FOSTER and Margaret SAYRE, on 2 Jun 1840.²³ He died on 6 Nov 1893 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, at age 88.²⁴ He was buried in Aspen Grove Cemetery, near Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa.²⁵ He served in the Black Hawk War in 1832. He "was a farmer, Methodist, and democrat; he was over six feet tall and sparingly built; he had black hair, deep-set blue eyes, and a Roman nose; and he was a reader and thinker and a fine-looking man."²⁶

4. Jesse HUNT (Esther BARTLETT)^35,36 was born on 20 Jun 1807 in Blount County, Tennessee.³⁷ He married Harriet Delinda KIRKPATRICK on 8 Apr 1829 in Bond County, Illinois.³⁸ He died in 1871.³⁹

Harriet Delinda KIRKPATRICK died in 1893.⁴⁰

• 14. ii. Esther Virginia HUNT^41,42 was born in 1834.⁴³ She died in 1876.⁴⁴ She never married and died of typhoid.⁴⁵
• 15. iii. Harriet HUNT^46,47 was born in 1836.⁴⁸ She married Samuel GRIGGS.⁴⁹ She died circa 1861.⁵⁰ She and Samuel had one child, who died young. Harriet died of "lung trouble."⁵¹
• + 16. iv. Illinois HUNT, born 1838; married William E. SMITH.
• 17. v. John Bartlett HUNT^52,53 married Emma CRONK in 1893.⁵⁴ They farmed near Burlington, Iowa. They had two children, who died at birth.⁵⁵

5. Mary ('Polly') HUNT (Esther BARTLETT)^56,57 was born on 22 Nov 1809 in Blount County, Tennessee.⁵⁸ She married Thomas Bradford MCADAMS, son of Joseph MCADAMS and Sarah BRADFORD, on 24 Dec 1825 in Bond County, Illinois.⁵⁹ She died on 27 Feb 1904 in Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois, at age 94.⁶⁰ She was buried in Clear Springs Cemetery, Montgomery County, Illinois (near Hillsboro).⁶¹ Polly's picture, and a picture of Polly and granddaughter Cora in front of the old McAdams house, appears on page 176 of James Alonzo Matthews, Jr., comp., Pearce, Bartlett, Matthews, Smart, and Allied Families (Austin, Tex.: Eakin Publications, Inc., 1983).⁶²

Thomas Bradford MCADAMS^63,64 was born on 5 Sep 1799.⁶⁵ He died on 10 Sep 1869 at age 70.⁶⁶ He was buried in Clear Springs Cemetery, Montgomery County, Illinois (near Hillsboro).⁶⁷ Thomas served in the Black Hawk War in 1832.⁶⁸

6. Samuel Beale HUNT (Esther BARTLETT)^94,95 was born in 1812 in Kentucky.⁹⁶ He married Martha ('Patsy') MCGEE in 1838 in Illinois.⁹⁷ He died in Jan 1893.⁹⁸ He was buried in Aspen Grove Cemetery, near Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa.⁹⁹ He was born while his parents and family sought protection from Indians in a blockhouse in Kentucky, while moving from Blount County, Tennessee to Madison County, Illinois, where they settled in the fall of 1812 and lived until moving on to nearby Bond County in 1817. Samuel, brother Jesse, and Jesse's wife and child relocated in McDonough County, Illinois in 1832, near Uncle Jesse Bartlett, and in 1834 Samuel they moved on to Union Township, Des Moines County, Iowa.¹⁰⁰

Martha ('Patsy') MCGEE was born circa 1823¹⁰¹ and died circa 1882.¹⁰²

WILSON on 3 Jul 1835 in McDonough County, Illinois.^125,126,127 She died on 27 Feb 1888 at age 72¹²⁸ and was buried in Eldorado, Monroe County, Iowa.¹²⁹ She was born in the part of Madison County, Illinois that is now Bond County. She and Anderson lived on a farm near Marysville, Monroe County, Iowa.¹³⁰

Anderson C. WILSON was born on 18 Jan 1813 in Virginia.¹³¹ He died on 19 Jul 1862 in Monroe County, Iowa, at age 49^132,133 and was buried in Eldorado, Monroe County, Iowa.^134,135

William Claiborne HUNT (Esther BARTLETT)^136,137 was born on 21 Jan 1818 in Bond County, Illinois.¹³⁸ He married Anne SMITH on 21 Nov 1843.¹³⁹ He died in 1911 in Des Moines County, Iowa.¹⁴⁰ "There was perhaps no name in Des Moines County which carried with it more uprightness of earnest citizenship and integrity or called forth more universal experience of regard than that of William C. Hunt."¹⁴¹

Anne SMITH was born on 15 Aug 1821 in Sutton, England.¹⁴²

John Bartlett HUNT (Esther BARTLETT)^159,160 was born in 1820 in Bond County, Illinois.¹⁶¹ He married Mary LOVE in Des Moines County, Iowa.¹⁶² John and Mary divorced when the children were young, and the children were raised by John's mother, Esther Bartlett Hunt, and John's unmarried sister, Louisa Hunt. John was an unsuccessful gold prospector in California in the 1849 Gold Rush.¹⁶³

J. Ellison SMITH¹⁹⁷ was born in 1825.¹⁹⁸ He died in 1893.¹⁹⁹ J. Ellison SMITH was elected in 1889 to the Illinois House of Representatives.²⁰⁰

Mayfield TRUITT was an engineer for the C&A Railway.³⁰²

Sarah Amanda BARRY³¹⁴ was born on 17 Mar 1848.³¹⁵ She died on 11 Oct 1923 at age 75.³¹⁶ She was the sister of Isaac Newton BARRY, who married Margaret Ann MCADAMS, Samuel's sister.³¹⁷

26. Margaret Ann MCADAMS (Mary HUNT, Esther BARTLETT)^346,347 was born on 29 Nov 1847.³⁴⁸ She married Isaac Newton BARRY on 30 Jul 1868.³⁴⁹ She died on 19 Oct 1945 at age 97.³⁵⁰ They lived in Litchfield, Illinois.³⁵¹

Isaac Newton BARRY³⁵² died in 1908 in Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois.³⁵³ He was the brother of Sarah Amanda BARRY, who married Samuel Hunt MCADAMS, Margaret Ann's sister.³⁵⁴
