From The Houston Tri-Weekly Telegraph for 19 May 1865: "Departed this life, on the 16th day of April, A.D., 1865, at the residence of his father, in Washington county, Texas, J. C. B. McFadin, the son of Nathan A. and Eliza McFadin. He was born November 28th, 1837, aged 27 years, 4 months and 18 days. He enlisted in the army in the year 1861, served faithfully till bad health forced him to retire from the service, at which time he received a discharge. Recovering his health a little, he re-enlisted, but had not been in the field long when he took the measles, from which he partially recovered, and again visited his family and friends. Very soon after reaching home, he was severely attacked by typhoid fever; he with his physicians soon discovered that death was approaching, upon which, by his request, a minister was sent for, who conversed with him upon the subject of religion. He expressed himself willing to depart, and be with his Savior. He admonished, and pointed his relations and friends heavenward; commended his wife and infant son to God and his friends, and gently slept in death, leaving behind him the consolation to all interested, that death to him was only the passway to a better state of existence. He left a wife and numerous friends to mourn his absence, for he died as he had lived, beloved by all who knew him. His acquaintances feel to sing: 'With us his name shall live, Through long succeeding years, Embalmed with all our hearts can give; Our praises and our tears.'"77,78
