[295] GODFREY VAN LANEN:
[296] Born March 17th, 1854 in the town of Scott, Brown County Wisconsin, the fourth child, and third son of Peter Van Lanen, and Wilhemina Jansens. At the age of ten Godfrey met and shook hands with Abraham Lincoln, a candidate for president.
[297] HANNAH HERMANS:
[298] Born November 19th, 1858 in the town of Preble, Brown County, Wisconsin the daughter of Albert Hermans, and Anna Marie Kusters.
[299] FAMILY HISTORY:
[300] Godfrey and Hannah were wed on October 3rd 1876, in Holy Cross Church, Bay Settlement, Wisconsin. They lived in the town of Scott where in 1878 Hannah gave birth to their first son Peter. Second son Albert was born on August 10th, 1979. The 1880 census describes Godfrey's occupation as a farmer. Godfrey and Hannah had 5 children between 1880 and 1891: William born November 8th 1881, Martin born February 3rd, 1884, Mary Ann born May 6th 1886, Mary Genevieve born January 3rd 1889, Minnie born May 7th 1891.
[301] In late 1892, and early 1893, the area was struck by a diptheria epidemic. Albert and Mary Ann were aflicted, Albert died on January 27th, and Mary Ann March 6th, 1893. In September, 1893 Godfrey and Hannah had another son whom they named Albert, and on April 7th 1896 another girl whom they named Mary Ann (my Grandmother). Finally, on April 3rd, 1899 Hannah gave birth to Anna Mary, she suffered from birthing complications and died on the 14th of April 1899.
[302] Godfrey carried on and spent 20 years as the manger of the Wequiock Cremery and served the Town of Scott as a county supervisor, and treasurer for 10 years, holding many offices in town government and at Holy Cross Church.
[303] Godfrey died on February 28th, 1939 at the age of 84 at his daughter Mary Ann's house at 1413 Day Street in Green Bat, Wisconsin. Grace Mary Angst (my mother) described her recollection of his death:
[304] "Aunt Del and Uncle Martin and other relatives had spent the night. He (Godfrey) wanted to sit up and I remember they (the relatives) talked about sitting so he could lean on them. When I woke up in the morning we were told that Grandpa had died."
[305] ------------------------------------------------------------------ Obituary - Godfrey Van Lanen:
[306] Godfrey Van Lanen, 85, former resident of the town of Scott, died this morning at the home ooof his daughter, Mrs. JOseph Angts, 1415 Day street, of old infirmities, he had been ill since Wednesday. The deceased was the son of Peter Van Lanen, first treasurer of the town of Scott, and served in that position for 10 years. He represented Scott as a supervisor in Brown County, and was a manager of the Wequiock creamery for twenty years, and held offices in the parocial school and Holy Cross Church in Bay Settlement.
[307] Mr. Van Lanen was born near Wequiock, March 17, 1854, and was married when he was 22 to Hannah Herman, Bay Settlement. He farmed until his wifes death 20 years ago when he retired and turned over his farm to his son. He made a home with his daughter for 16 years.
[308] Survivors are three sons, Peter, Rockland; Martin, Wequiock; Albert Kaukauna; one daughter Mrs. Angst; 26 grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.
[309] The body is at the Dupont-Malcore funeral home where it will remain until the funeral services at 9:15 a.m. Friday at SS peter and Paul's church with burial in Holy Cross Church Bay Settlement. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Funeral services for Godfrey Van Lanen, 85, former resident of the town of Scott who died Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joseph Angst, 1415 Day street, will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday at SS Peter and Paul's church. Internment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Bay Settlement. The body is ar the Dupont-Malcore funeral home where rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Thursday by the Holy Name society of SS Peter and Paul's church. It will also be said at 8 o'clock this evening (Feb 28 1939). ---------------------------------------------------------------- Funeral services for Godfrey Van Lanen, 85, former resident of the town of Scott, who died Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. Joseph Angst, 1415 Day street, were conducted this morning in SS Peter and Paul's church by te Rev. M. T. Anderegg, pastor, who was assisted by the Revs, Louis Van Oeffel and J.G. Van Dyke, DePere, Michael Jacowski, Chilton; JOhn Kools, Glemore; Geral Ilk assistant pastor of SS Peter and Paul's church. The Rev. J.W. DeVreese of Bay Settlement conducted the internment service at Holy Cross Cemetery.
[310] The pall bearers were six grandsons: Orville, Donald, Norman, Alfred, Clifford, and Wilfred Van Lanen.
[311] Those who came from out of town for the services were Mrs. John Veraten and Frank Van Lanen of Wrightstown; Mr and Mrs. J. Kerkholl and son, Mark, and Mrs. Richard Lamers, Kaukauna; Miss Anna Van Lanen, Mr and Mrs John Willems, DePere; Mrs. Nellis Murasky, Milwaukee; Hularia, Helena, and Leonard Williams, Hollandtown; Mrs. Gertrude Peters, DePere; Framnk VandenHovel, Lawrence; Charles Morrison, Bay Settlement. The Holy Name society attended the funeral in group.

[313] Joyce Angst remembers that when her Grandfather Godfrey was living with them on Day street in Green Bay, he always had candy stashed in a trunk in his bedroom. He always walked everywhere, and his hands would shake. He had a special chair and a spitoon, and liked to eat at a regular time.
