Nathaniel Chester Maxwell and Lillian Frances Tharp
my mother's parents

 Nathaniel Chester Maxwell
31 July 1873 - 10 Sept. 1961

 Lillian Tharp Maxwell
9 July 1873 - 13 March 1951

My grandmother Maxwell went to Missouri Valley College in Marshall, MO. The picture was taken on Easter Sunday in 1893. She is on the right. Missouri Valley was established as a seminary for Presbyterian preachers and later branched out. In the early 1890's the dauthters of Presbyterian ministers were admitted for the first time. These were the first five graduating women. Grandmother Maxwell was a talented watercolor artist and many of her works are hung in her descendants' homes. Here are a couple examples of her work.

My grandfather Maxwell went to Silverton about 1903 from Missouri to work as a bookkeeper in one of the mines. He was a graduate of college. Over the years he had numerous positions in several of the mines, wrote and edited for the newspapers and was the county judge for many years.

N.C. and Lillian are buried in Hillside Cemetery, Silverton, CO
