FIRST GENERATION

1.  Barnabas ARTHUR was born about 1735 in , Lunenburg Co., Virginia.
He was prosecuted along with others on 9 Nov 1752 in , Caroline Co., Virginia.1,2,3  Thomas Lee believed that prosperity depended on strict enforcement of the laws to limit tobacco produced for export, and in keeping with his belief ordered county courts to force constables to make oath that they visited every plantation in their precincts and determined if the laws stinting (limiting) the number of plants under cultivation and banning the tending of seconds were being obeyed.  Barnabas Arthur and others were arrested and fined 1,000 pounds of tobacco each. Not sure if this Barnabas was the son of John or the son of his brother William.  Both were teenagers and probably not married.

3.  Lucy ARTHUR was born about 1755 in , Bedford Co., Virginia.
She received a Land Grant: 200 acres in Wilkes Co., Georgia in 1786 in , Wilkes Co., Georgia.50

She was married to James MCKELROY.

4.  Mathew ARTHUR Sr. was born about 1756 in , Bedford Co., Virginia.53  According to the 1820 census, Mathew is over 45.  And in the 1830 census for Barnabas Arthur in Habersham  Co., Georgia, an older male is in the household, in the 70 to 80 age group.  Since Mathew participated in the 1832 Gold Lottery, and is in no other census for 1830, unless missed by the census takers, he is possibly this older male.  This would place his year of birth sometime around 1760, possibly before.  Since no census exists prior to 1820 for Georgia, the task of determining his age is difficult without other evidence.  He served in the military in 1772 in , Bedford Co., Virginia.  Joined when he was 16, served for 3 months.  He served in the military between 1776 and 1783 in , , Virginia.  Served in Virginia under Capt. Leftwich, Regiment Commanded by Col. calloway.  Volunteered in Bedford Co., Virginia served several tours in Virginia,  arresting Tories.

He appeared on the census in 1790 in , Franklin Co., Georgia.57,58,59  Reconstructed census for Georgia.  Original returns were lost when the British captured the city of Washington in 1812 and burned many of the government buildings.  Deed, court and other official records were used to rebuild the census.  There is another Mathew Arthur in Georgia enumerated in Wilkes Co.  These are the same people.  Mathew Arthur was originally granted 200 acres of land in Wilkes Co., Georgia.  It is possible that Mathew never moved, just lived in an area that was called Wilkes Co. and was used to create Franklin Co. by the time the reconstruction was attempted.

He was married to Caty (Charity or Catherine?) about 1785 in , Wilkes Co., Georgia.94  10/2/98: At this writing, I am not sure where or when Mathew and Caty Arthur are married.  I have written Wilkes Co., Georgia, however, it could just have easily been somewhere in Virginia.  There is no record of their marriage in the Bedford Co. or Campbell Co., Virginia marriage records.  I have yet to find any record in Wilkes or Franklin Co., Georgia.  Since the records of most Georgia counties during this period are not complete, it is likely that we may never have an accurate date or location.  The knowledge that we have that Mathew married Caty ______ is the mention of her name with Mathew's in a deed for Franklin Co., Georgia in 1795.

Daughters: Elizabeth Bowles; Fanny Pratt; Lucy Greer; Rhody White, dec'd.;
Grandsons: Barnabas and James Maxey.

"In the name of God Amen. I, Barnabas Arthur, of the county of Bedford being
weak in body but of sound and disposing memory, calling to mind the uncertainty
of life and being desirous of disposing of such property as God hath helped me
with do make ordain and constitute this my last will and testament hereby

Imprimus: It is my will that all my debts be paid off as soon as possible after
my decease.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my wife Nancy one third part of my whole estate

then it is my will that the tract of land I now live do constitute a part.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my grandsons JAMES MAXEY and BARNABAS MAXEY the
sum of five pounds each to be their full share of my estate.
Item: In consequence of long and faithful service of my negro man George and my
negro Betty, it is my desire that they be emancipated, whenever the laws of this
state will allow it and they have the tract of land I purchased of Benjamin
Williamson for and during the term of their natural lives; to live upon and
maintain their idiot daughter Amy and until they can be so emancipated it is my
will that they shall live upon said land and maintain their said daughter and
have all the profits of their labor, under the direction of my son LEWIS and
moreover that they be furnished with one year provision out of my estate
whenever they leave it in consequence of this article and the said negroes are
not to be considered or appraised as part of my estate.
Item: The residue of my estate both real and personal, after executing the above
bequests together with the part left my wife, after her decease and that left to

Lewis Arthur - One (1) tract of land --------------- $100.00
William Arthur - Land and cash --------------------- $ 80.00
Lucy Greer - Cash --------------------------------------- $ 20.00

Given unto my hand and seal this 2nd day of March 1815; Teste: J. Leftwich,

Signed by: Barnabas Arthur (his mark)  He died before 24 Apr 1815 in , Bedford
Co., Virginia.  His estate was probated on 20 Jul 1815 in , Bedford Co.,
Virginia.2  Court held for probation of Will of Barnabas Arthur convened 24
April 1815, but was continued until the actual day of probation on 20 July 1815.

Inventory and Appraisement of the Estate of Barnabas ARTHUR", Inventory taken 24
August 1815, approved on 27 November 1815. The estate was valued at $5,801.31.
Items included horses, cattle, hogs, sheep, wagon, 122 bushels of wheat, 10
adult slaves, 22 negro boys, 65 barrels of corn, and leaf tobacco.  The widow's
dower as $1,953.77, Negro George 35 acres of land and nine bushels of corn, and
Barnabas Marcy's legacy left in hands of executor.  According to the will of
Barnabas, 4th child of John and Rebecca of Goose Creek, his wife was Nancy; from
Bedford County Deeds we find a Barnabas with a wife named Elizabeth who was
still alive in 1802.
It is believed by some that Barnabas married second to Nancy Williamson, 3
January 1811, as per marriage records of Bedford County, Va.  Others have stated
that his second wife was Nancy Clayton.  I offer no proof for either claim. It
can be stated for sure is that Barnabas was married first to Elizabeth who died
after 1802 and then married second to Nancy.  There were numerous Barnabas
Arthurs around Bedford, Campbell, and Franklin Co.'s at the same time, making
identification of each very difficult.

He was married to Elizabeth (ARTHUR).  Elizabeth ARTHUR was born about 1735.
She died after 1802 in , Bedford Co., Virginia.  Barnabas ARTHUR Sr. and
Elizabeth ARTHUR had the following children:

        +2      i.      (Phebe?) ARTHUR.
        +3      ii.     Elizabeth ARTHUR.

        +9      viii.   Barnabas ARTHUR Jr..
        +10     ix.     Lucy ARTHUR.
        +11     x.      Caleb ARTHUR.

He was married to Nancy WILLIAMSON /CLAYTON on 3 Jan 1811 in , Bedford Co.,
Virginia.  William Arther, Surety; Married by John Ayers.  Nancy WILLIAMSON
/CLAYTON was born about 1735.  She died after 1815.

SECOND GENERATION

2.  (Phebe?) ARTHUR was born about 1750 in , Bedford Co., Virginia.  She died
before 1815.  Her given name is not known.  The only reference that indicates it
might be Phebe has to do with a death record of one of the children of Josiah
and Phebe (?) Arthur Maxey.  However, in the will of Barnabas Arthur, Sr. the
only mention of grandchildren are in reference to Barnabas Arthur Maxey and
James Maxey.  Since the will was written many years after Josiah's death, one
might assume that since the other children were not mentioned then they may have
come from another marriage.  Josiah's wife's name in his will of 1793 is given
as Phebe, but it is not known if her maiden name is Arthur.

She was married to Josiah MAXEY Sr. (son of Walter MAXEY and Mary Ann
NETHERLAND).  Josiah MAXEY Sr. was born in 1739 in , Goochland Co., Virginia.
He signed a will on 2 Aug 1793 in , Franklin Co., Virginia.  He died in Oct 1793
in , Franklin Co., Virginia.  (Phebe?) ARTHUR and Josiah MAXEY Sr. had the
following children:

        +12     i.      James MAXEY.
        +13     ii.     Barnabas Arthur MAXEY.

3.  Elizabeth ARTHUR was born about 1754 in , Bedford Co., Virginia.  Also noted
that her birth year is 1757.  She died in 1844.

She was married to George BOWLES in Nov 1774 in , Bedford Co., Virginia.

4.  Francis (Fanny) ARTHUR was born about 1757 in , Bedford Co., Virginia.  She
died in , , Alabama.

She was married to Jonathan PRATT before 1815.  Jonathan PRATT was born about
