Hello again cousins, here it is newsletter time again. We hope everyone enjoys reading Magora Owens' continuing story on our family. She puts a lot of time and work into her research, and we all ow her a debt of gratitude. Let us say Hello also to two new members researching the family. Mrs. J.C. (Minnie) Shackleford, of Yuba City Cal., and Betty McGuffey of Lampassas Tex. Minnie is on Wm. Marchbanks Wingfield's line, and Betty is on James Wingfield's line, the son of Wm. and Sophia. One short story this time .....and we will see you all next issue.
* * *
Perhaps some of you know this story, some may not, but her it is anyway. Wm. and Mary Messer Wingfiled and their children had many distinctions, one being that they survived the earthquake of 1811-12. Earthquake you say? That's right. The New Madrid earthquake began in late Dec. of 1811 and continued off and on till late Jan. of 1812. Probably the first shake caught our kin off guard. Brother Charles told it this way..... It was breakfast time, and him being the youngest was always late to get his share. The ground started shaking, and the family, Wm. and Mary and his brothers all hit the floor and started praying. Being only twelve, his mind wondered on something other than deliverance. Charles could only think that now he wouldn't get his turn at the syrup can!

If you can find a reference to the earthquake, it makes great reading. Sources say the Mississippi River actually flowed backward for thee or four days. It was a great upheaval, and we speculate that this was the reason the family moved on to Illinois very soon after this event. It must have been quite an experience.
