Jane Fuqua

[Jane Fuqua]

Jane Fuqua, c. 1885

Jane Fuqua was born in 1831 in Arkansas. She married Crawford B. Andrews photo with whom she had seven children. She is not directly related to me; however, her nephew, James C. Fuqua, married Martha Elizabeth Stockton who was a sister of my great-grandmother, Mary Susan Stockton. Jane's descendants suggest that she was part Native American. I think that can be seen in her face.
The following story was related to me by my cousin, Vicki Lynn Malone. I think you will find it as interesting as I did.
"Crawford B. Andrews and two sons fought in the Civil War. While they were away, Yankees camped on their front lawn and Jane hid some gold the family had. Then she forgot where she hid it. It was lost till after the war. One day, she was upstairs making the bed and happened to look at the chimney and remembered she had hidden the gold behind one of the bricks. Crawford owned a plantation and raised quarter horses. Supposedly, his father was a fur trapper and married a Caddo Native American. She had land and evidently that's how he got the property. Years later Jane was staying with one of her daughter when she died. She (Jane) was alone in the house and was warming herself by the fire. She had those big petticoats on and when she backed up too close, they caught on fire. She ran out where her daughter was hanging out the wash, but by that time, was completely engulfed in flames. She was burned very badly and died soon after."
A tragic story and probably all too often true!
