OWEN, Joseph H. [3269] 1 2
- Born: 2 Nov 1778, Gloucester, Providence Co, RI 3 4
- Marriage: CALDWELL, Esther [8948]
- Died: 24 Sep 1866, Barton, Orleans Co, VT at age 87 2
General Notes:
According to Margaret E. Potter (1999]: According to Men of Vermont: An Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters and Sons of Vermont, page ___, Joseph, in company with other settlers, came to Barton, VT in 1798, floated down the river to Newport and made an excursion through the woods to Westfield, where they built camps on their own lots, subsequently settling in Barton. Parts of the towns of Barton and Westfield, VT had been granted to his father in 1781, apparently called the "Hampshire Grants." Mrs. Moore gives death date as 1866.
According to O-Bill (1999): Records in Child's Orleans County Directory stated Joseph H. Owen 1778 had four boys and six girls. I don't have the other girls' names. Joseph and his wife came to Barton in April, 1796 with his sister Elizabeth Owen May and her husband and child. Their daughter Amelia May was the first white child born in Barton. 2
Joseph married Esther CALDWELL [8948], daughter of William CALDWELL [4186] and Unknown. (Esther CALDWELL [8948] was born in 1779 4 and died in 1870 4.)
