They advertise this program as the most comprehensive easy to
use family history software. I readily agree since I have used many other
genealogy software programs over the years and have now used this one for at
least two years. I enjoy the ease of editing new information as I get
it. I originally purchased mine, and I am still using version 3.0 and now they
are giving it away free! It is easy to gedcom to and is at least worth a trial.
They now have a more deluxe edition which they are selling and which you can
purchase. It makes nice charts and does everything you want to do in a
genealogy software program including making references and notes. You can also
add photos or tape recordings. Try it since it is free and you won't be sorry.
I guess I should upgrade to the Deluxe Edition.
Features new databases added every weekday in addition to
other world databases and maps, with some free and others by subscription.
They have many old and valuable reference books and some that were not
even indexed in the original publication, but this format allows every
name to be retrieved. You need to watch for the variant spellings since
this is not a soundex type search. Ancestry also has PERSI as one of their
databases. (Periodical Source Index). Searchable Census Indexes are also
available for searching. Their newest big feature is many of the actual
US Census records which may be viewed in their original script. Their aim
is to eventually have all census schedules for the entire US. Check to
see if the ones you need or now available. This may save you a trip to
the library.
You may do an Ancestry database search here. Some are free and
others require a subscription. Rates are reasonable and you may subscribe
here. It doesn't cost anything to try it out and see how many hits you
receive for a given name. Just put the name of the person you are
searching for in this search engine. You may narrow the search by
requesting a certain locality, a keyword and a specific record type. Over
one billion names may be searched in this database.
Search all US states for free on-line help and searchable
databases for each county. You will find a map of the US and click on the state
of interest, then look for the list of counties. There is also a map of the
state which includes all current counties. Their policy is to keep this
information free to all as long as it is for personal use, but they do accept
donations to help pay the overhead which is considerable for such a tremendous
operation. The people who maintain these pages donate their time, so be sure to
express your thanks and be courteous if you ask them to do a special favor such
as to look up something in a county resource
US GENWEB ARCHIVES SEARCH ENGINE

The purpose of Roots Web is to make large volumes of data available to the
on-line genealogical community at minimal cost and to provide support services

keep their services free to all. This certainly is a worthy project

LDS FAMILY SEARCH GENEALOGY SITE
This huge free database is the one that many of us have been looking
forward to for many years. You can search your ancestors by putting a name in their
search engine, or narrow your search by also putting in the spouses name. You will then need to
decide which of the many hits you receive, that are actually your family. This site is still
undergoing tests and there may be changes. It is anticipated that the various databases may
include the very popular International Genealogical Index (IGI), Ancestral File (AF) and the
Family History Library Catalog
If you had ancestors who came to America in the late 19th or early 20th century
(1892-1924), did they come through Ellis Island? If they did, you may be able to
find them in this large on-line Ellis Island Database being developed by the
American Family Immigration History Center. It may help you to identify when
they immigrated, where they came from, the ship they arrived on and in some
cases they went back to the old country and returned again and this may also
help you identify where they were living in America and if they had become a US
citizen. In order to search the database, you need to register, but it is free.

The program is small and can easily be downloaded to a floppy or
directly to your system if you wish. The download is a zip file
and takes only a few seconds. If you try it and like it, the
author, Linda Dil, asks you to send her $5. I have moved mine to my
desktop for easy access.
