The Anderson family
below came from Virginia to Abbeville, SC, in May of 1790. We think that descendants of this family
later migrated to Franklin, Madison and DeKalb Counties in Georgia. Later some of them moved to Benton/Calhoun
County in Alabama. This family is documented on the Hodge mailing list. Go to that list and search for Anderson.

I am looking at your
Walter Anderson info. There are a lot
of people out there who have put together family groups for this man - but none
of them have much
documentation, and I suspect them of simply downloading each other and
perpetuating things until the things seem
like they must be
true. I'm a little frustrated.
I come to this family
with tons of documentation and family records - up to a point. I believe my ancestor to have been the son
of Tabitha
Anderson, daughter of
Walter, and I've found a mess of little documents that seem to indicate this
kind of link. By the way, many of these
people moved to Greene
county, Al - Pleasant Wright, Suzannah's husband, went there around 1820. The Chesley Davis family sons also
went there in droves -
as did the Dorrohs and the Tallmans, and bunch of others. My main interest is in the Davis families
aligned with this
branch of the
Andersons.
It was lovely to find
your stuff - with its lovely sources.
So I'm going to ask you a question or two, if I might:
John Anderson is
constantly said to have been married to a woman named Brown. One researcher called her Virginia Brown -
but can I find the source of that info?
Of course not - somebody wrote it down once, and everybody accepted it
as truth - but not one bit of source work can I find on either the Brown or the
Virginia.
The other question is
Walter's Tabitha - the wife. It makes
sense, but I can find no proof. The
same researcher who filled in the Brown blank also filled this one, calling her
Tabitha Long, which is logical - but not proved. On several bits of this genealogy, people also assert that
Tabitha, the daughter, was actually Tabitha L. - and that she was married to
Thomas Davis. Again, I see logic in
this, and have several
documents that might
suggest it, but I have seen no proof, and none of these people have sources.
Does any of this ring a
bell for you? If so, please - relieve
my brain cramp.
Thanks,
Kristen Randle

Margaret, John married Frances Anderson in late 1790.
Frances came from Virginia to Abbeville in May 1790 with her
family. Her father lived to be over 105 years old. At that age he could walk
thirteen miles. Little was known about Frances until 1994. In a separate study,
the research is described where it was learned that her parents were Walter
Anderson and his wife Tabitha. Their children were Samuel Anderson; Richard L.

Patrick,
I'm attaching a very
brief chart which shows some of the relationships involving Walter Anderson of
King George Co. VA. I can give you quite a bit on the allied Smith line, but I
believe that would be defeating your purpose. There is quite a bit available
too on the Moffetts (which I don't have).
You will note that
there was a John Anderson in King George. I believe it was his will which
documents that his brother was Walter and that he (John) had a son Walter. This
second Walter is the one who married Ann Thornton.
There was a third
Walter. This was (I believe) the son of Cyprian and grandson of Walter. I
believe it was this line of Andersons who you find in Fauquier in the mid-late
1700s. I haven't done much on them.

[snip of info about
Lawrence senior]
My interest is John
Anderson (b. 1740 - d. 1819). He lived in Drysdale Parish, Caroline Co., VA. We
have found him signing Colonial Church Petitions in 1770's and he is listed many
times in COLONIAL CAROLINE - A History of Caroline County, Virginia by P.E.
Campbell and the book, PEOPLE, POSTOFFICE AND COMMUNITIES IN CAROLINE COUNTY,
VIRGINIA 1727-1769 by Rev. Ralph Emmett Falls.
I have very little
information on John Anderson, Sr. as to his family, but I do know that this
ties in to the information that was furnished on Oct. 22, 1946 by Sarah Ann
Anderson Wright, known as Fannie, the oldest child of Samuel Chapman Anderson -
the youngest child and son of Henry and Julia Ann T. Anderson. She states that
the information below was some of the things that were told by her Grandmother
Julia Ann T. Anderson and some things that she knew about her great great
grandfather.
Her father's
grandfather was named John Anderson. He was known to be the wealthiest man in
Caroline Co., VA. he owned more negroes and more land than he could enumerate.
His old home in Caroline Co., VA was known by us as Watt Anderson place,
situated half way between Whites Mill and Sparta in Caroline. The old Anderson
burial lot is still there where so many of our ancestors are buried.
"I will try to
tell you something about the children of my great great grandfather John
Anderson and as much about their families as I can. I being an old person
myself not, but I have a very good memory. He had a son named John Jr. who had
a good many children: his daughter Fannie, wife of Tom Samuel; John Edward and
Easer Anderson. There were others. This is what I know of them.
Samuel Anderson emigrated to Texas with
ten young boys. I heard they lost tract of them;
Judith Anderson, wife of Billie Jordan,
parents of William Jordan, who had a son named Charley
Jordan and others;
Tom Anderson - I don't know him. I only
knew there was one named Tom;
Walter Anderson, father of Watt Anderson.
They always lived in the old Anderson home;
My Grandfather Henry Anderson married
Julia Ann T. Adkins, half sister to William George Garnett
and Emoline Garnett Carter, mother of
Luther Eugene Carter and others.
I will try to tell you something about my
grandfather and grandmother.
Henry Anderson and Julia Ann T. Adkins
were parents of the following children:
William, known as Uncle Billy
Anderson, married Ailsie Pitts, parents of Burton Anderson and
grandfather of Herbert Anderson (Ruth
Callown's husband and others);
Uncle Billy was wounded in the Civil
War;
Mary Toliver Anderson, wife of George
Goldman, parents of Pierce, Sweetie
Kate and others;
John Anderson killed in the Civil War
was not married;
Sarah Ann (Nannie) Anderson, wife of
Elic Goldman - no children;
Catherine Kate Anderson, wife of
Cornelius Minor - parents of John Goldman and William Henry
Minor;
Samuel Chapman Anderson married Bettie
Jane Beasley, parents of ten children:
Sarah Ann, known as Nannie
Anderson Wright. Oldest child killed in First World War about
1918;
Henry Owell Anderson married Jane
Dishman - 4 children;
Leticia Jane Anderson Melton, wife of Charles Melton - one
son, Herbert;

As you might be
aware, most of the Courthouse records
in Caroline Co., VA were destroyed by fire.
I have been able to
tie some of the property records together, but not sure of the same names.
Still working. You have my permission to fold this information into your

I did find a Lawrence

Lawrence Anderson family. I thought the information I posted was interesting
since it came from Joel Anderson, Sr.'s Bible. I have additional information on

Thanks for the info,
Patrick. And you can add Samuel W.
Anderson (who died 1819 with a will probated in Albemarle Co. May 3, 1819) m.
Jane Lyon. The Samuel W. Anderson, Jr.
who married Susannah Beck was his son.
There are currently 4
of us with ties to this Anderson/Lyon connection who are comparing notes and
histories and research. We
"met" via the Anderson List @ rootsweb and through the Genforum at
Family Tree Maker. One woman is making
a run to the Nelson Co. Courthouse tomorrow.
I'll let you know if we
find anything of interest!

Hello!
I *TRY* to stay away
from the gen forum during the school year because I get sooooooo caught up in
research that it distracts me from things I *should* be doing, but thanks to a
researcher in CA (thanks, Steve!), I've added a couple of new documents to my
website:
http://www.bigfoot.com/~artrageous
Latest entries include
the will of Walter Anderson (son of Samuel W. Anderson) as well as a letter
from 1811 from Samuel in VA to Walter in KY. I've also included a map that
shows where I *think* "Rich Cove" is--this location is mentioned in
numerous wills and deeds from central Virginia.
These and other
documents are in the "Reports, Wills, Deeds, Obits, Photos &
Resources" section.
My website is
searchable (you'll see "The Art-Rageous Search Engine" on the main
page) and there's a ton of information included on a whole lot of central
Virginia families. The search engine is a good way to look for ancestors who
might be *mentioned* in wills and deeds, but don't really warrant their own
sections.
Pretty much all I know
(about just about everything in the world--ha!) is on my website, so please
take a look if you're researching VA Andersons.

Hello!
Don't know if you
remember me--some time back I wrote trying to get info on Andersons in Central
VA. With help from a guy named Pete
(HFerre6760) I was just able to find our connection. Went to your website to piece it together.
If you want to update,
this is in your "Descendents of Richard Anderson" section. Entry 177: John & Mary Thurmond
Lyon.
Their daughter, Mary,
was born Dec. 19, 1809. She had a child
out of wedlock (my great-great grandfather, John William Anderson) on June 24,
1826. She married a Woodson B. Fox in
August 1829. That's all I know about
her, but if you like, I can furnish info about John William Anderson's
descendants. Don't know how to do
gedcom stuff, but I can e-mail if you're interested.
Thanks!

24, 1826; died November 11, 1902. He
married Sarah Jane Rhodes January 29, 1846.
Notes for John William
Anderson:
I, John W. Anderson of
Nelson County, Va, being of sound mind and memory, do declare this to be my
last will and testament in manner following:
Item 1st: I direct that
all my just debts be paid, as soon as practicable, after my decease.
Item 2nd: I direct that
all my personal property, of whatever description, be sold and the proceeds
from such sale be equally divided and given to my six children.
Item 3rd: I direct that
my executors collect as far as possible, all debts due me, and make an equal
division of such funds thus received, and give the same to my six children.
Item 4th: In
consideration of valuable services rendered me and my family for a long period
of time, by my sister in laws Cynthia F. Rodes and Cornelia E. Rodes, I give
and devise to them jointly all my real estate with the appertenances thereon,
to be used for their comfort and maintenance during their lives. After their
death I direct said real estate to be sold, and the proceeds to be equally
divided and given to my six children.
Item 5th: I select and
request that my son Willard O. Anderson to remain with his two aunts and keep
the land, in good condition, and retain thereon whatever may be most
advantageous to the support of the family. All over a support for his aunts,
and after paying necessary expenses, I direct him to retain for his own
use. I desire that my two grandsons and
granddaughter remain in the family and if from any cause the said Willard O.
Anderson should not comply with my request, I then select my grandson J.E.
Anderson for the position on the same terms proposed to my son.
Item 6th: Should it be
necessary at any time to employ someone outside the family to see to the
interests of my sisters in law, I direct that my executors do, with their
approval, what will be most advantageous to them and see that they are
comfortable and well cared for in all respects.
Item 7th: I appoint my
two sons James T. Anderson and Samuel M. Anderson executors of this my last
will.
