This Thomas Anderson built ca. 1738 and operated a grist mill on the OPEQUON River in "old" Frederick Co, VA--in 1863 this area became

Berkeley Co, WEST VA. Though it burned several times, this mill was restored each time and is cited as being one of a handful of authentic

colonial era operating mills left in the U.S.; it is on the Dept of Interior's National Historical Landmarks List (correct title?). It was in superb shape when I last saw it 10 years ago, located 3/4 mile east of hamlet called "BUNKER HILL" about 10-15 miles north of Winchester,

VA, on U.S. Highway 11 and was then owned by the Gilchrist family, who were very appreciative of what they had.

Thomas died ca. 1748 (see will in Frederick Co Circuit Court Archives) leaving two sons:

JAMES AND COLBERT (sometimes misread as CUTH- BERT due to illegible handwritting. COLBERT remainded in Berkeley Co and his descendants are said to still live in that co and in Frederick Co. JAMES, however, sold his inher- ited lands in 1763 and migrated with his family to up-country region of "old" Colleton Co, SC--now either Edgefield or Greenwood Co, SC. Descendants are said to be living there.

For best reference to what I have written here, consult a superbly researched book on the history of Frederick County,VA, published within the last 5-10 years. I apologize formy forgetfulness. Also, see Chalkey's "Annals of the Scotch-Irish";  Judge Chalkey-- a circuit judge--abstracted local cases involving the S-I as he held court through his circuit, which was a large part of northern VA. Chalkey cites this law case which involved son JAMES ANDERSON. THOMAS, his wife (MARY?), COLBERT, are named as well as grandchildren. JAMES, by

then in SC, had to give power of attorney to COLBERT to clear up  problem. Good luck.

Hello Pat Anderson,

Thanks for the information just printed all of it out so as to read it very carefully.  I have J. Estelle Stewart Kings improved edition of the Abstracts, etc of Frederick County, Va. and did find Thomas Anderson's will listed.  A cousin had done much research on the family in the 1970's and according to her info she hand copied his will from pages 163, 164 and 165 of the Will Book No. 1 . Frederick County Court, Winchester, VA.  His will info is also published in the Hopewell Friends History 1734-1934 , Frederick County, Va., published by the Genealogical Publishing Co. Have you seen this will.  I have a hard time understanding it since it is dated Dec. 11, 1747 and was probated in March of 1747. [editors note: this last date is actually March of 1748, the Gregorian calandar with the new year starting on January 1 was not introduced to English colonies until 1751) The first line states that it is his last will and testament .  I have an idea the dates have been recorded wrong.  Thank you very much for your assistance.  I would like to know more about Colbert Anderson's Rev. War records.  I shall pursue that further at a later date.  Also, I want to know if anyone knows where Thomas Anderson is buried.  He was a Quaker.  Thanks Pat.

Back in '98, John W. Anderson, 2000 N. 28th St., Terre Haute, exchanged mail with you on your colonial VA Anderson website. He said he had extensive printed matter re Anderson line who were in the British navy.

I ignored this at the time, but since then noticed that the inventory of my mysterious Thomas Anderson, Berkeley Co., VA (d. 1747) contained "a large Semon (sic) book."  Could this be "seaman"?

Have attempted to locate this man, but email to his old address, [email protected] has bounced, and he is not currently listed at the above address. Do you know this man or the woman (Ann?) whom he had visited?

Thanks.

I am descended from Thomas, through James, SC. Have researched this line for about 30 years, but largely ignored Colbert, who remained in VA.

I suspect they may be related to the Anderson-Opdyck "Dutch" family (e.g., Bartholomew, Cornelius, Enoch), but cannot as  yet establish this. The Thomas in Talbot Co., MD is not our line, according to professional  researcher.

Will be happy to share info.

Have found no answers to Thomas' "New York" origin, as alleged in Colbert Jr.'s lawsuit. Similarly, most of the SC families were Loyalists during the Revolution (James, Jr. and Colbert were refugees behind British lines in Charleston, where apparently James died; Colbert's  property confiscated; family almost disappeared, except my branch, which removed to Pendleton District, then East TN).

Your Anderson line is that of Thomas Anderson, blacksmith and miller on Mill Creek just east of Bunker Hill, WV by 1735. The name Culbert or Colbert (as it is generally rendered) is a pretty indicator. The lineage runs: 1)Thomas Anderson 2)Colbert Anderson I 3)Colbert Anderson II. Thomas had only one other son, James Anderson who migrated to District Ninety-Six, SC to found a dynasty of Andersons from there.

The first Colbert died young leaving only two children: Rebecca and Colbert, Jr. (II) who was just an infant at the time of his father's death. This second Colbert acquires the Anderson lands and the mill, etc., marries Nancy (aka Ann), and fathers a large family. I descend from William Anderson, the eldest son and executor of his father's estate. William moved to Brown Co., OH (then Adams Co.) in about 1808.

Patrick,

I found your email address at Ancestry.com. I am wondering if my Anderson family ancestors tie in with yours. I am a descendent of a Rebecca Anderson born about 1780 in South Carolina-believed to have been raised in the Abbeville District town of Ninety Six. Her father was James Anderson who, in his will, bequeaths land to his son Stephen Anderson. He acquired this land when his brother Stephen Anderson left land to him (James Anderson) and to Colbert Anderson. He also mentions daughter Sarah and Rebecca and his wife Agnes. Colbert Anderson was appointed one of the Executors. Will was probated 1782. Let me know if you have run across this family. Look forward to hearing from you.

IN DOING RESEARCH ON MY MATHIS/MATTTHEWS FAMILY LINE IN SOUTH CAROLINA, I CAME ACROSS THE WILL OF COLBERT ANDERSON WRITTEN 1772 , INVENTORIED MARCH 10, 1786 IN EDGEFIELD DISTRICT.  INVENTORY MADE BY RICHARD LANIER, OBEDIAH FIELDS AND THOMAS ROSS.  ADMINISTRATORS WERE COLBERT'S WIFE, MARY AND HIS BROTHER JAMES ANDERSON.

THE WILL WAS PROVED ON NOVEMBER 29, 1785 AND WITNESSED BY WILLIAM AND MOLLY MATHIS (MATTHEWS) AND ELIZABETH MC CRAE.

IN THIS WILL, COLBERT STATES THAT HIS CHILDREN ARE JAMES, JOHN, JANE AND COLBERT AND THAT HE HAD BROTHERS JAMES AND STEVEN.  ALSO THAT HE HAD LAND ON HALFWAY SWAMP...

DO I ASSUME CORRECTLY THAT THESE ARE THE SAME RECORDS FOR YOUR SOURCES?

FURTHER,  ON OCTOBER 29, 1832, RE THE JAMES ANDERSON ESTATE:

"STATE OF S.C., EDGEFIELD DIST.., PERSONALLY APPEARED WM. HOLLOWAY, SR. AND CALEB HOLLOWAY, SR. AND AFTER BEING DULY SWORN SAY THAT LUKE MATHIS AND PERMELIA SALE ARE HALF-BROTHER AND SISTER TO JAMES ANDERSON WHO FORMERLY LIVED NEAR CAMBRIDGE, S.C. AND LATELY IN CHARLESTON DIST., NEAR GOOSE CREEK AND THAT SAID LUKE MATHIS AND PARMELIA SALAE ARE THE ONLY OR NEAREST RELATIONS AND HEIRS THAT THEY KNOW OF THAT ARE LIVING UNLESS THERE SHOULD BE SOME OF JOHN ANDERSON'S CHILDREN LIVING AND THAT IF ANY OF SAID JOHN ANDERSON'S CHILDREN ARE ALIVE THEY DO NOT LIVE IN THIS STATE AS THEY BELIEVE...

JUNE 1, 1835, JAMES ANDERSON, DECEASED, ESTATE, WM. ANDREWS, ADM.

WILLIAM ANDREWS, HAVING BEEN CITED BY LUKE MATHIS, HALF-BROTHER OF JAMES ANDERSON...

"KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS THAT WE LUKE MATHIS, GILLAM SALES, BARTHOLOMEW JORDAN, THOMAS EFFORT OWEN, ALL OF ABBEVILLE DISTRICT IN THE STATE AFORESAID, ARE HELD AND JOINTLY BOUND TO WM. ANDREWS OF EDGEFIELD DISTRICT IN THE SAID STATE IN THE SUM OF $1000 TO BE PAID TO THE SAID WM. ANDREWS, HIS....ETC...

WHEREAS A BALANCE REMAINS IN THE HANDS OF THE AFORENAMED, WM. ANDREWS, AS ADMINISTRATOR OF JAMES ANDERSON, LATE OF EDGEFIELD DIST., DECEASED, ...

THE SAID LUKE MATTHEWS BEING A BROTHER OF THE HALF-BLOOD OF THE SAID JAMES ANDERSON AND PAMELA SALES, WIFE OF THE SAID GILLAM, BEING A SISTER OF THE HALF-BLOOD: AND WHEREAS JOHN ANDERSON, A BROTHER OF THE SAID JAMES ANDERSON DIED MANY YEARS AGO LEAVING TWO SONS WHICH TWO SONS LEFT THE STATE AND HAVE NOT BEEN HEARD OF FOR TWENTY-FIVE YEARS...

THIS LUKE MATHIS IS IN MY DIRECT FAMILY LINE.

APPARENTLY, JAMES' MOTHER, MARY, WIFE OF COLBERT ANDERSON, IS THE MOTHER OF OUR LUKE MATTHEWS.  AS BEST AS WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONJECTURE, SHE MARRIED WILLIAM MATTHEWS AFTER COLBERT'S DEATH..

COLBERT ANDERSON'S WILL SHOWS THAT WILLIAM AND MOLLY MATTHEWS WERE WITNESSES.  THIS WOULD BE IN KEEPING WITH OUR OTHER RECORDS WHICH SHOW THAT OUR LUKE MATHIS/MATTHEWS  AND HIS SISTER, PAMELA/PERMELIA WERE BORN BETWEEN 1787-1790.

WILLIAM MATTHEWS IN THE 1790 ABBEVILLE CENSUS SHOWS TO HAVE THE CORRECT NUMBER OF MALES OVER 16 AND UNDER 16 , AND FEMALES FOR THEM TO HAVE BEEN MARY'S CHILDREN BY COLBERT ANDERSON, AND THE TWO SHE HAD BY WILLIAM (LUKE AND PAMELA).  ALSO, HE IS IN THE CENSUS BESIDE JOHN CARSON WHOSE DAUGHTER, ISABELLA (PHOEBE) MARRIED OUR LUKE MATHIS, AND LATER WENT TO THE EDGEFIELD DISTRICT...

THANKS YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR ALL THE INFORMATION YOU PROVIDED ON THE COLBERT ANDERSON LINEAGE...I JUST WANTED TO SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH YOU ON THE OFF CHANCE THAT YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE IT.  I, ALSO, HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND MARY'S MAIDEN NAME, THOUGH IT IS CERTAIN FROM THESE RECORDS THAT SHE MARRIED A MATTHEWS AND HAD A SON NAMED LUKE, AND A DAUGHTER NAMED PAMELA/PERMELIA BY A MATTHEWS.  .

ANY FURTHER INFORMATION YOU MIGHT FURNISH WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

We ate supper with Ann yesterday evening and she told me of your page.  I have much printned material on this Anderson family which I promised to copy for Ann.  If you would like I will run a extra copy and mail you.  One area discuses a young Anderson who was in the english navy and then came to America.  He was on the war council (?) and the english navy was forming a semi circle around a fort.  He advised not to fire till the semi circle was completed and his advice was followed and the battle was a success for the americans.  I will be happy to send you a copy if you like.

I am not related to this line but have info re Colbert Anderson of Berkeley Co. VA that I thought might be of interest to you.

My ancestor, Mehitable Ester Nolan b. ca. 1762, had an illegitimate daughter Mary born in 1783. According to the court records, she named Colbert Anderson as the father of her "baseborn" child and he was fined and ordered to pay support for 3 yrs.

Mehitable Ester Nolan married in 1785 to Moses Russell and they moved to Ohio. Moses raised Mary as his own child and she married

Phineas Matthews.

I thought it might be helpful for you to have this knowledge in your possession in case descendants of Mary are trying to research her ancestry.

I just discovered another piece of information relating to Kentucky Lands that were supposed to be willed to the five

sons of Colbert Anderson of Berkeley Co., VA c1805. Source is a set of volumes titled "Kentucky Court of Appeals

Deed Books" compiled by Michael L. Cook and Bettie A. Cook, Cook Publications, Evansville, IN 47712, published 1985.

Volume II page 94 (original page 356)

Indenture, January 23, 1805 Andrew Waggoner of Berkeley Co., Virginia and Mary Waggoner, his wife to Colbert Anderson of Berkeley Co., for $4,262 two tracts of land in Livingston Co., Kentucky, one of the tracts containing 1,200 acres which was conveyed to James Garrard, Governor of Kentucky by deed dated December 9, 1784 being part of a military warrant, and beginning on the bank of the river, thence northeast, the other tract containing 931 acres by survey dated October 5, 17907 and beginning on the bank of the river at the upper corner to a survey of Benjamine Holmes thence up the river, it being granted to Waggoner by Kentucky on April 13, 1800 by virtue of a military warrant and entered December 9, 1784. Both of said tracts being in the district set apart for officers and soldiers of the Virginia Continental Line on the Ohio River. Witnessed by William Riddell, George Cunningham, Theodore Messinger, and Elisha Boyd. Mary Waggoner relinquished the rights of dower.

Recorded March 4, 1805 Berkeley County, Virginia and

November 4, 1805 by Kentucky Court of Appeals. ...

This states that Colbert Anderson paid cash for the land while his will prepared shortly thereafter seems to indicate

that he bartered the Anderson mill at Bunker Hill, Virginia for the Kentucky land. At least we now have a better

legal description by which to locate the land. Still I have no indication that any Anderson descedant ever occupied this land in western Kentucky. In those days $4262 was alot of money to pay for a piece of land you never used. I think we should ask for our money back with interest.

In spite of extensive documentation there is still room, it seems, for some confusion concerning the family of Colbert Anderson, Jr. of Berkeley Co., WV and his wife Ann. So

I have been reexamining the extensive probate records for

this couple. I will say the Colbert Anderson's will is

very explicite on this point -- there are a total of nine

children designated as heirs and there are five sons very

clearly named as William, Providence, James, Thomas, and

Colbert. That leaves four (4)daughters. In addition to the

will itself we can examine the estate account records to see who received payments as heirs of Colbert Anderson which

gives us another fix on the names of the daughters and their husbands. For example the payments made 11 May 1813

include: "cash to George Knup who married Rebecca Anderson one of the heirs $82"; "cash to Mrs. Ann Anderson guardian to Mary and Ann Anderson two of the children of C. Anderson

$165"; and "cash paid to John Kerney and Elenor his wife said Elenor being one of the heirs of C. Anderson dec'd $65"

In those three entries we have the names of all four daughters: Rebecca Anderson Knupp, Elenor Anderson Kerney,

Mary and Ann Anderson. Amelia is nowhere named as an

heir or daughter of Colbert Anderson, Jr.

However, a few years later Mrs. Ann Anderson, widow of

Colbert Anderson, Jr. dies and her estate enters into probate c1823. In this case there is, I believe, no will

so all legal children (or their children) can claim an

equal share of the estate. This includes all of nine children of Colbert Anderson, Jr. as listed above except

now Mary and Ann are also married. The surprise is that

there is now, it seems, a fifth daughter -- Amelia.

Actually Amelia is deceased so it is her sons, Andrew, William, and John Waggoner, who are to share in the Ann

Anderson estate. It seems that Amelia Anderson, wife of

Thomas Waggoner, is a legally recognized daughter of Ann

Anderson but not a child of Colbert Anderson, Jr.

Since the Andersons and the Waggoners were near neighbors

in the Bunker Hill community this marriage would point

to Amelia having been around if not in the Colbert Anderson household. If we guess that her age was not too different from that of her husband it is quit possible that she was born before Ann's marriage to Colbert Anderson. The eldest son, William Anderson, was born in 1774 according to his tombstone.

Colbert Anderson III was the father of my GGgrandmother Nancy Anderson. Nancy was born in 1809. She married John Deck 5 Jan 1825 in Berkeley County, Va (now WVA). She and John migrated to Indiana and the 1850 census listed her as being born in KY. Is there any info out there about Colbert III being in KY during the 1809 time period, and if so, where in KY?? Who was Colbert III wife and what was her ancestry?? Help!! I'm at a brickwall!!

I believe there is some confusion as to which Colbert Anderson married Isabelle VanMeter that I can now clear up.

There are two options to consider: (1)The son of Colbert Anderson, Jr. whom I will designate as Colbert III.

or (2) Colbert the son of James Anderson and grandson of Colbert Anderson Jr.

The household of Colbert and Isabelle VanMeter Anderson is

found in the 1850 census neighboring that of Isabelle's

father. In this record Colbert Anderson indicates his age

as 42, i.e. born in 1808 several years after the death of

Colbert Anderson, Jr. so that would seem to take Colbert III

out of the running leaving us with Colbert, son of James, as

the likely man.

For kicks I have attempted to get some fix on the birth year for Colbert III. This I think I can now do from an

examination of the court records for the Estate of Colbert

Anderson with William Anderson, Executor. For example,

among payments to heirs made in 1816 we have a payment

to Thomas Anderson guardian for Colbert Anderson. I believe

this tells us that Colbert III is not yet age 21, i.e. born

after 1795. Indeed several other heirs receive their shares through the agency of a guardian such as Joel Ward

who is guardian of James Anderson's children. Again in 1817

Colbert III gets his share through Thomas Anderson, his older brother, but by 6 Apr 1819 Colbert Anderson III is,

it seems, old enough to receive payment in his own right.

I conclude, on this basis that Colbert Anderson III was

born between 1796 and 1798, at least 10 years before his

nephew of the same name. I don't know what happened to

Colbert Anderson III after this, but I am sure he did not

marry Isabelle VanMeter.

Greetings!  I saw your address posted at the genforum and  hoped you could provide information.  I am a descendant of a Rebecca  Anderson b. 1812/3 in Berkeley, WV.  I have been trying to piece together Rebecca's line and am hoping that you can be of help.  I'll share with you what I think I know and invite you to either confirm or deny based on your data.

First of all, I found a marriage record for James Anderson and Christena Schoppert dated April 7, 1805.  From my findings their children included Colbert, Nancy, Eliza, Amelia, and Rebecca:

.... Colbert b. 1807 married Isabel VanMeter

.... Nancy b. 1809 married John Deck in 1825 (They moved to Ohio and later to Indiana).

.... Amelia b. 1811 married James VanMeter (relation to Isabel above?), and had a son named Colbert.  They too moved to Indiana with Amelia dying 8/7/1893, in Hancock, IN.

.... Rebecca married John Morrison on 11/27/1831.  I believe that this is my line.  By 1850 John had shortened his name to Morris.  They were living in Berkeley, WV then but by 1860 they had moved to Hancock, IN (cf. Amelia above).  Their children included Christena and Colbert along with several others.  Their oldest daughter Ann married a Deck (cf. Nancy above).

Do you know anything about this family?  The next question is if we can go any further.  I did find James Anderson in the 1810 Berkeley census, with two small children which would correspond with Colbert and Nancy.  Next door is a large Anderson family headed by Ann.  I then found a record for Colbert Anderson d. 1804, leaving wife Nancy (Ann?) and nine children (girls - Rebecca, Eleanor, Mary, and Nancy; boys - John, Colbert, Wm, Providence, and JAMES.  This Colbert d. 1804 was the son of Colbert, the son of Thomas.  Thomas came from NY to that area of VA in 1738 where he operated a grist mill.  From my understanding, this grist mill is still operational today.

I would appreciate any information you might have.  Thanks so much!

Child of James Anderson and Elizabeth Light is:

+      32               i.    Colbert7 Anderson, born 1808.

        28.  William6 Anderson (Colbert5, Colbert4, Thomas3, "Northern Virginia"2, "Colonial Virginia"1) was born 1774.  He married Isabella Daniel.

Russ, sorry if I seem to be hard to find. I've been neglecting my Anderson line a bit. I am interested in learning more about your line from Colbert Anderson III as I am unable to account for all the Colbert Andersons that turn up in the IGI or census indexes, for example. One puzzle left by the will of Colbert Anderson II is that he specifies that land in KY was to be divided equally amongst his sons. Your Colbert III seems to be the only son who may have taken up some of that land. I descend from the eldest son, William Anderson, who went to Brown Co., OH to settle with his wife's people and, it seems, never did anything with the KY land claim. The land in question would have been  claimed under Military Warrants issued to Andrew Waggonner and bartered to Colbert Anderson II in exchange for the Anderson Mill. William Anderson, as executor of his father's estate, was instructed to sell some of the land and to use the funds to gain clear title for the

remainder. I don't know whether William carried out his father's wishes. In addition to my own Anderson line through William I know something about Providence Anderson's descendants, but not much else yet.

The William Anderson, executor of the estate of Colbert Anderson II, as it says in the probate record, moved to Ohio by about 1808. It says "Adam County, OH" (actually it was Adams Co.) as Brown Co. had not yet been formed. The actual location in modern terms is Huntington Twp., Brown Co., OH on a tract originally survey for Isaac Hite. That tract was purchased by Samuel Daniel and divided among William

Anderson, Joseph Daniel, and William Hiett all of whom were heirs of a John Daniel of Berkeley Co. William Anderson's spouse is Isabella (aka Elizabeth) Daniel. William and Isabella Anderson are buried in a private plot on their land near the village of Hiett in Huntington Twp.. William's tombstone bears an inscription which identifies him as being "of Berkeley County, VA". So I think I can safely say we have a correct identification of William Anderson although there is some confusion, for example, in the files of the Berkeley Co. Historical Society.

As for the siblings of this William Anderson, i.e. the children of Colbert Anderson II I consider the authoritative sources two wills which name a number of heirs. One is the will of Colbert Anderson II which makes it clear that the above William Anderson is the eldest son and Colbert Anderson III is the youngest child. As to who else should be included, there seems to be some disagreement here. For example, I find no mention of a John Anderson. I'd really like to know how he gets included in this family group. The second will of significance is

that of the Colbert II's widow, Nancy Anderson (aka Ann). For reasons I don't understand it is probate in neighboring Frederick Co. While all the son's names are still the same there is an Amelia Anderson Waggoner, dec'd, whose share goes to two Waggoner sons. I've been told by a Waggoner descendant that Amelia's husband is likely Thomas Waggoner, a son of the Andrew Waggoner who battered a land claim

for the Anderson mill. The puzzle is that no Amelia Anderson is mentioned in the will of Colbert Anderson II. There are clearly two or more Anderson families in the neighborhood who are not obviously connected to the Colbert Anderson line so one has to take some care to keep them sorted properly. I have assumed (but can't prove) that the use of the name Colbert is a useful clue for the identification of the right Anderson line in subsequent generations. Indeed my William Anderson did name a son Colbert.
