Descendants of "Scots" Anderson

Generation No. 1

        1.  "Scots"3 Anderson  ("York Watershed"2, "Colonial Virginia"1) (Source: William Pope Anderson, Anderson Family Records,  (W. F. Schaeffer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio; 1936).) was born Abt. 1675 in Scotland.

Notes for "Scots" Anderson:

Samuel Davies of Hanover County wrote that on 02/14/1754 in conversation with Adam Anderson in London, Adam said "his uncle was the grandfather of the Andersons in Hanover Co., Virginia."   Adam Anderson was a clerk in the South Sea Trading House of London, and a member of a society for the propagation of Christianity in the colonies.  Samuel Davies is a Presbyterian Minister from New England and is noteworthy as the champion of the appointment of George Washington as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army.

There were two major Anderson familes of Hanover County and they are mixed so thoroughly together that clearly separating them may be impossible.

Samuel Davies was refering to a line of Scots Andersons who came to Hanover County about 1700.  They were "Presbyterian distenters" & followers of Samuel Davies - are identified in records as "Scots Robert" or Scotch Robert & Scots Jennett or Scots Jenny"

It is important to understand that surviving precessioning records of St. Paul's parish and other assorted records of Hanover and Louisa County contain references to other Andersons not yet connected to the Goldmine family.

Children of "Scots" Anderson are:

+      2                 i.    Captain Robert4 Anderson, born Abt. 1700 in New Kent County, Virginia; died Abt. 1759 in Louisa County, Virginia.

Generation No. 2

        2.  Captain Robert4 Anderson ("Scots"3, "York Watershed"2, "Colonial Virginia"1) was born Abt. 1700 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1759 in Louisa County, Virginia.  He married Mary ?.  She died Aft. 1765.

Notes for Captain Robert Anderson:

The Robert Anderson of the following record could not be Robert, I or Robert, II as they were dead by 1716 nor could it be Robert, III of "Goldmine"  who was not born until 1711/2.  Therefore he is undoubtedly Scotch Robert Anderson a Presbyterian dissenter.

Hello Mr. Anderson,

I have visited your web pages and read through the interesting and well documented 'Anderson' information you have posted.  Thank you for providing this helpful information.

Because of your Anderson family expertise, I am writing to inquire about my ancestors, Robert Anderson and his son John Anderson who resided in Albemarle Co, VA, from about 1750 to 1783.  Information about these men is summarized below and in the attached file.

My earliest 'Anderson' ancestor is ROBERT ANDERSON.  The earliest record I have of him is 8 MAY 1750, when he purchased 200 acres on Stockton's Branch of Meacham's River in Albemarle County.  Although there are two earlier deeds in Albemarle County which reference Robert Anderson's property line, I have found no earlier deed or land grant conveying property to a Robert Anderson.  This Robert Anderson was married to MARY (maiden name unknown). Robert Anderson may have been deceased by 8 SEP 1760 when a neighbor's deed referenced the property line of JOHN ANDERSON (Robert's son) rather than the line of Robert Anderson.   Robert was definitely deceased by 6 AUG 1765 when his son, John Anderson, sold the land purchased by his father.  The deed shows that "MARY ANDERSON, mother to the said John Anderson" relinquished her dower rights.  I have found no probate record for Robert Anderson in Albemarle County records - causing me to wonder if his estate may have been probated in another county (e.g., Hanover Co).

Robert's son, John Anderson, was married to Mary WOOD, daughter of Nathan Wood (who also resided on Meacham's river).  John Anderson and Mary Wood remained in Albemarle County until 1783.  In that year the Albemarle tax list includes John Anderson's name on the list of removals.  At about the same time, on 1 NOV 1784, a John Anderson and Mary his wife of St Martin's Parish sold 250 acres of land in Hanover County to a Thomas Anderson.  I do not know if the John Anderson and wife Mary of  Hanover are the same persons

as the John and Mary Anderson who removed from Albemarle in 1783.

John Anderson and Mary Wood appear on the Franklin County, VA, tax lists from about 1797 to 1804 (from memory).  After that, I have no knowledge of what became of John Anderson and Mary Wood.  While in Franklin County, John and Mary Anderson gave permission for their daughter, ELEANOR Anderson, to marry William PACKWOOD; and for another daughter, SARAH Anderson, to marry David ROSS (these are my ancestors).

Enclosed is a MS Word ".doc" file with some information about Robert Anderson and his son John Anderson.

After this long preamble, I have a rather simple question for you.  Do you know the origins of the Robert Anderson and wife Mary who purchased land in Albemarle County in 1750?   Do you think it possible that this Robert Anderson was a member of the Anderson family in Hanover County?  I would be appreciative of any information or research suggestions you may be able to provide.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards,

Ross Chappell
