Descendants of Robert Anderson

Generation No. 1

        1.  The Immigrant Robert4 Anderson  (Richard3, "York Watershed"2, "Colonial Virginia"1) was born 1613 in Great Britain, and died Aft. 1666 in New Kent County, Virginia.  He married ? Bartelot.  She was born Abt. 1620, and died Aft. 1664 in New Kent County, Virginia.

Notes for The Immigrant Robert Anderson:

Robert Anderson, "the immigrant" was born in Great Britain in 1613. Hottens Emigrants by John Camden Hotten provides us with the fact that Robert Anderson, age 22, embarked in "Ann & Elizabeth" April 27, 1635 for Virginia. In York County Wills & Deeds on 12/3/1657     Robert Andrewson is listed as a juror. In the sources discussed below; Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent is credited as being born between 1640 and 1645 and his family is known to use the name Bartelot Anderson. In a 1694 York County deposition Bartelot Anderson and his brother John Anderson testify that they are 36 and 30 years old, thus born in 1658 and 1664. The land of Robert Anderson is listed in the Virginia Patents as adjacent Moyses Davies at Tottopottomoyes Creek in 1666. Robert Anderson, the immigrant then likely had sons Robert Anderson, Sr. of York then New Kent, Bartelot Anderson of York, and John Anderson of York and New Kent County.

_______________

This family has been researched for genealogical purposes since 1881. A Mr. Brock wrote several newspaper articles in the 1880's.  Edward L. Anderson wrote the earliest book on the Robert Anderson family and published "The Andersons of Goldmine" which can be found in the Library of Congress.  In 1936 William Pope Anderson began a re-work of the Robert Anderson family and documented that Robert Anderson,Sr. of New Kent County arrived in what is now Hanover county between 1670 and 1677 as one of 80 persons transported to Virginia by charter to George Chapman by William Berkeley, Governor.

In the mid 20th century Nell Marion Nugent published her index of the Virginia Land Patents including volume: Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, 1623-1666, Nell Marion Nugent, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, Maryland, 1983. My examination in 1980's of Cavaliers and Pioneers revealed that there is a patent record in 1666 that shows Robert Anderson was an adjacent landholder to Moses Davies at Totopotomys Creek in the delta of the Pamunkey River at the head of the York River, an arm of the Chesapeake Bay. In addition a Robert Anderson appears in York County records as a jurist on December 3, 1657.  It is very likely then that Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent County had been a resident of and been born in Virginia. Additional records would be available except that after Gloucester County was formed from York it's records were destroyed in an 1820 fire and the details of land purchases and wills along the north bank of the York River and at the mouth of the Pamunkey have been lost to that fire.  The most significant loss is how Robert Anderson obtained his land at Totopotomys Creek.

If the family tradition of Edward L. Anderson in "The Andersons of Gold Mine" and repeated in  "Ye Andersons of Virginia", pages 231- 288, Volume 11, Old Northwest Genealogical Quarterly, Columbus, Ohio, 1908; are correct, Robert's father may be the Reverend Richard Anderson, mentioned in 1640's and 1650's York County, Viriginia Court Records.   "Burke's American Families With British Ancestry" (Genealogical Pub. Co., Baltimore, 1977) p.2539; Excerpted from "Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry," 16th ed. (London, 1939) contends that Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent probably descended from Richard Anderson who left England for the colonies 4 Jul 1635, being then aged 17, and was followed on 31 Jul of the same year by Richard Anderson, aged 50, who was presumably his father. The presumption is then that Richard Anderson age 17 in 1635 is the same as the Reverend Richard Anderson of York County VA and that he is the father of Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent.  The ancestors of Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent given in these sources are very speculative, unsubstantiated by record and there are some conflicts between several authors' publications.

York County Wills & Deeds

12/3/1657       Robert Anderson is listed as a Juror

Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent County should have been born by 1636 to qualify as a jurist in 1657. Indeed it would have been unusual to have a 21 year old on a jury. It is also unlikely that an established resident of New Kent County would be a juror in York County.

This 1657 record suggests that there was an earlier generation of Robert Anderson living in York County and only recorded the once in the York County records. Hottens Emigrants by John Camden Hotten provides us with the fact that Robert Anderson, age 22, embarked in "Ann & Elizabeth" April 27, 1635 for Virginia.  With the scarcety of surviving records and the fact that most of those surviving records pertain to land ownership it is entirely possible that Robert Anderson, Sr.'s father was the Robert Anderson (b.1613) of the Ann & Elizabeth and and could be claimed to be the father of Robert, Bartelot and John of York County Records.  Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent County may not have been born until as late as 1645-1650.

By adding this ancestor I am of course creating another vague and unreliable possibility for the parentage of Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent County. I am doing so deliberately just to emphasize how easy it is to contrive another lineage. My claim is supported by just 3 records. The published claims that Robert descends from Richard Anderson (b.1585) and his alleged son Reverend Richard Anderson are even more contrived and are unsubstantiated by any Virginia record that I have found as of 2003.

From the Virginia land patents

1666        Robert Anderson adjacent Moyses Davies at Tottopottomoyes Creek

1670        Robert Anderson adjacent John Fleming & Thomas Glass

These two records indicate that a Robert Anderson already owned land along Tottopottomoyes Creek before 1666.  Totopotomy's Creek flows into the Pamunkey River from the south in the eastern part of what is now Hanover County Virginia.  While these notations refer to lands significantly upstream along the Pamunkey River it is a reported tradition that Robert Anderson had as his early primary residence properties at West Point near the junction of the Pamunkey, Mattaponi and York Rivers.  The western lands near Totopotomey's Creek were speculative and in the interests of his growning sons.

The 1666 record is the first that we can soundly connect to Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent County, as this land can be traced in his possession. Whether this record is of his ownership, or that of his father we do not know.  Bartlet Anderson of York County was born in 1658 and his brother by record John Anderson of York County was born in 1664. This suggests that this elder Robert Anderson of the 1657 record was still alive at or near the time of the 1666 record.

By accepting this earlier Robert Anderson (b.1613) of York County as the father of the Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent we relax the burden on having Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent being born early enough (ca1636) to be the jurist and late enough to be a son of the immigrant Richard Anderson of 1635 (ca 1636) which in fact leaves only that year 1636 in which he could have been born and still be the source of these entries in the Virginia Records. Having this one man be the source of these records would make him older by another 5 years than anyone has claimed to date.

For this reason I contend as above that Robert Anderson, of York County, "the immigrant" was born in Great Britain in 1613 as found in Hottens Emigrants by John Camden Hotten. Robert Anderson, age 22, embarked in "Ann & Elizabeth" April 27, 1635 for Virginia. Robert Anderson settled in York County, Virginia and as appears in York County Wills & Deeds on 12/3/1657 Robert Andrewson at the age of 44 was a Juror. Robert Anderson had as his early primary residence properties at West Point near the junction of the Pamunkey, Mattaponi and York Rivers.  The western lands in New Kent County he obained by 1666 near Totopotomey's Creek were speculative and in the interests of his growning sons. I attribute to him sons Robert, Bartlet and John from York and New Kent County records, but do not exclude the possible existence of others.

Notes for ? Bartelot:

Because of the use of the name Bartelot as a given name in this family, and the common practice in colonial times of naming a son with a given name the same as the surname of the mother consideration should be given that this woman was a Miss Bartelot.

Children of Robert Anderson and ? Bartelot are:

+      2                 i.    Robert5 Anderson, Sr., born Abt. 1642 in York County, Virginia; died 1712 in New Kent County, Virginia.

3                ii.    Bartelot Anderson, born 1658 in New Kent County, Virginia; died Bet. 1694 - 1704 in New Kent County, Virginia.

Notes for Bartelot Anderson:

Bartelot Anderson was born about 1658 along the York River in Colonial Virginia.  His birth date derives from the followiing court entry.

York Co., Va. Deed Book for years 1694-1697

....Apr. 5, 1694, deposition of Bartlott Anderson in which he deposeth he is aged 36 years and his brother - John Anderson deposeth he is aged 30 years.

Because of the common use of the name Bartelot Anderson in the New Kent County family in the next hundred years it can be farly certain that Bartelot was the son of the founder of that family in Virginia.

I have not personnaly examined surviving New Kent County records. I have not as yet found any reference that indicates Bartelot had any family, however he did survive long enough to have fathered children and some of the children listed for his brother Robert may in fact belond to him.  Examination should be made of early St. Peter's Parish Vestry records for reference to him.

+      4               iii.    John Anderson, born 1664 in New Kent County, Virginia; died Bef. 1706 in New Kent County, Virginia.

(Source: William Pope Anderson, Anderson Family Records,  (W. F. Schaeffer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio; 1936).) Abt. 1661.  She was born Abt. 1645, and died Aft. 1685 in New Kent County, Virginia.

Notes for Robert Anderson, Sr.:

From the Virginia land patents

1666        Robert Anderson adjacent Moyses Davies at Tottopottomoyes Creek

1670        Robert Anderson adjacent John Fleming & Thomas Glass

The 1666 record is the first that we can soundly assigned to the family of Robert Anderson, Sr., either to himself or his father. Virginia land patents often identify the land by reference to nearby creeks and branches and whether they are above of below a river that is a branch of the Chesapeake Bay.  In addition they list the adjacent landowners.  These two records indicate that a Robert Anderson already owned land along Tottopottomoyes Creek before 1666.  Totopotomey's Creek flows into the Pamunkey River from the south in the eastern part of what is now Hanover County Virginia.

George Chapman

04/22/1670     4150 acres      New Kent County

Pamunkey Neck, etc. for the transport of Robert Anderson

This reference may be from Robert returning from a trip to England.  There were many reasons for such a trip including the need to see to family affairs there and for education and merchantile affairs.  At this time the many landowners frequently selected a member from among them to act as an agent, who returned to England in the spring season when such trips were considered safe from hurricanes and took with him papers and power of attorney from the other landowners that allowed him to represent their interests.  He would then return their monies and report to them upon his return.  Such trips were burdensome and such task was rotated among landowners.

In 1677 Robert Anderson signed the petition of grievances for Blisland Parish regarding Gov. Berkley.  He was a vestry man of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County on 11/1686; and for St. Paul's Parish from 1704-1712.  However these records do not imply that he had ever moved, rather they reflect the reorganization of the parishes that were occuriing at the time as the Virginia frontier expanded St. Paul's Parish having been formed from the western reaches of St. Peter's Parish.

Patent Book 7       page 272

N of Chickahominy Swamp in the head of Holly Bush Branch adj. Thomas Glass, to mouth of Meyry Branch. For the importation of 15 persons

This 727 patent became the "Goldmine" plantation. The Chickahominy River spilts the ground between the Pamunkey River and the James River flowing southeast and joining the James River in the eastern portion of Charles City County.  I checked for Holly Bush Branch and Meyry Branch on a current Virginia map but did not find them listed.  But these lands were in the area just north of current Mechanicsville, Virginia.  According to Edward L. Anderson "Goldmines" is on the west side of Gold Mine Creek just north of Rockville, which is 20 miles northwest of Richmond on Highway 160.

Robert Anderson Sr. appears in the Register of St. Peter's Parish New Kent County as follows:

25 Nov 1686 - Will Turner hath made a complaint to this vestry that his help being too weak in clearing of ye highways - ordered that the titables of Sam'l Wady, Thom. Glass, Will. Winston, Robert Anderson & Charles Fleming be added.

List of Lands to be processioned on the 4th of May 1689 - Sam'l Waddy, Mr. Boots, Rob't Thomson, Edw Bornett, John Talle, Richd Bollork, Sen, Richard Bollork, Jr, James Tate, Mr. Crawford, Andrew Davis, Edward Broxom, John Wall, William Winston, Jno Crawford, David Craford, Junr, Rob't Andrewson, Chas Fleming, Nicholas Mills, Dox Penix,  Mr. Dabbony and others.

Robert Anderson's signature appears repeatedly in the St. Paul Parish vestry book from 1706-1712.  He usually signs as Mr. Robert Anderson, Sr., but occasionally uses a large R symbol as a mark in his signature.  William Pope Anderson believed that Robert had become so frail that he could only make his mark and his name was signed for him.  His son signs as Robert Anderson, Jr. and there is another signator Captain Robert Anderson claimed but unconfirmed to be Robert Anderson, Jr. I beliee that this Captain Robert Anderson was none other than "Scotch" Robert Anderson a presbyterian from another family.

One of the jobs of the vestry of a colonial parish was to "precession" the lands of the neighborhood.  By this I mean that the land owners who had common borders would get together once in a while (every 5 years or so) and the would walk or ride together around the common boundaries of their land to agree on the border and to remark it freshly so that the marks would not be lost with time. The vestry would meet and name a precinct of landowners whose land bordered on each other and select from among them 2 or 3 prominent men to conduct the precessioning and report to the vestry.  Each landowner was required to attend or send a representative and any disagreement was recorded and reported by those in charge of the precessioning.  The parish was divided into "precincts"  each time it was done and becasue there were new landowners over the years the precincts are not always the same, but land that was held in one family is clearly indentifiable and allows one to trace the common precincts over time. Of course the major landowners had borders on all sides so it was possible to appear in more than one precinct if you were on the edge.  You might precession your eastern border in one precinct and your western border in another.

Fortunately the St. Paul's parish vestry book survived from 1706 to the 1780's and there are precessionings in 1708 and 1711 and so on.  Robert Anderson. Sr, and Robert Anderson Jr. and Richard, David, John, Matthew and Thomas Anderson all appear in the 1708 precincts list all of them near each other between Crumps Creek and Tottopotomies Creek and Mechumps Creek to the north of current Mechanicsville, Virginia.

The Quit Rents of Virginia, 1704, by Annie Laurie Wright Smith, Virginia State Archives; 1957.

Anderson, Robert         New Kent County          700 acres

Anderson, Robert         New Kent County          900 acres

Anderson, David          New Kent County          300 acres

Anderson, John           New Kent County          100 acres

Anderson, John           New Kent County          100 acres

Anderson, Richard        New Kent County          200 acres

Robert Anderson's death in 1712 is recorded in the St. Paul parish vestry book when an entry is made that he is deceased and being replaced as church vestryman.

From the 1704 rent roll it appears likely that Robert, David, John and Richard were the oldest sons and that Matthew, Thomas were younger and had not established their own plantations as of 1704. William appears in the King William County rent roll when it is known that he had relocated. Notice also that there is an additional John Anderson in this list I suspect is his younger brother John who appears to have died about 1706 according to St. Paul's vestry book which opens with an entry about care for his children.

Robert Anderson likely had daughters as well, however no record of them has been discovered to date.  The sources below list daughters for him and his son as Cecelia, Mary, Sarah and Charity; but this is clearly a confusion by those researchers with the names of the widows of his sons that appear in the St. Paul Parish vestry book.

Take caution, It is unproven that David, John, Richard, Matthew, William, and Thomas are sons of Robert Anderson, Sr. Indeed some may be sons of his brother Bartelot Anderson.

                           Commentary on Sources

William Pope Anderson in Anderson Family Records 1936, The Early Descendants of William Overton and Elizabeth Waters of Virginia, and Allied Families, 1938 and Anderson - Overton 1945 documents the descendants of Robert Anderson of New Kent County.  His interest lies with the family of Robert Clough Anderson of some historical fame. Robert C. served with Washington's Army (infamous at the battle of Trenton) and had a son who commanded Fort Sumter at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was considerate enough to collect and document family trees on Anderson families other than Robert's and although his text is tedious to study it contains a wealth of genealogical information. A notation in the latter volume states that copies may be obtained from "Charitable Relief Association", 203 West Third Street, Cincinnati 2, Ohio. However that reference has clearly expired. Both the Virginia and Tennessee State Libraries have had these books, although not all three.  The first and third are available from genealogical reprint book stores.

Edward L. Anderson wrote The Andersons of Goldmine, which is in the Library of Congress. It contains a family tree for the Robert Anderson family of New Kent.  It was used as a source for some of WIlliam Pope Anderson's work and he quotes it where applicable. It is the best source for family traditions. However Edward tended to lump all the Andersons of Hanover in the third generation as sons of Robert Anderson, II when some of them likely belonged to his brothers. He also credited the widows of Robert's sons as daughters of the family.

Climbing the Family Tree by Bessie Lamar Anderson Calvert is an additional source for this family.  It contains considerable detail, particularily regarding the female descendants of the family. However some of its data is questionable.

Notes for ?:

Cecelia Massie is the traditional name of his wife but to my knowledge it is unsupported by record.  In fact, I suspect it is an error caused by the misinterpretation of the land records associated with the widow Cecelia Anderson wife of Matthew Anderson.  Massie family researchers have been unable to connect her and alternative suggestions are solicited from researchers.

The son Matthew married a Cecelia Massie and the grandson Robert's wife's mother was a Cecelia Massie and therefore many Anderson family members correctly remember a Cecelia Massie as a great great grandmother, but I can find no supporting evidence that this woman was Cecelia Massie.

_________________________

W.P. Anderson appeared convinced that Cecelia Massie was the wife of Robert Anderson .  However this appears to be based only on family traditions as show by his note 4 on page 1 of his 2nd  book as shown below:

"There evidently was a tradition that a Robert Anderson married Cecelia Massie, as It is also given on the chart of (v6go) Robert M. Anderson, dated 1902, and mentioned in a "Monograph of the Anderson, Clark, Marshall and McArthur Connection" by (vbgl)Gen. T.M.Anderson. They however have the date of Robert Anderson's death as 1719, which is wrong. There is a Cecilia Anderson appearing in the processioning of 1719, but she apparently was the widow of Matthew Anderson.

In "Ye Andersons of Virginia" published 1908 by (v697) Dr. Charles Anderson it says a Robert Anderson married Cecelia Massie and places him as the father of Robert III b. 1712.

There Is nothing in the records left by (v6g) Gen. Robert Anderson,(v6o), Gov. Charles Anderson, or (v6f) Mrs. Sarah Kendrick, mentioning a Robert Anderson having married Cecelia Massie, but Gen. Robt. Anderson said "The Massies are related to us in some way."

In a letter from (wqx59) Mrs.Alice M.Tyler (AFR28) to ELA dated Sept.24, 1912, she states, "I found the information about Robert Anderson being sent to Virginia by Juxon & Co. in old records at the State Library. The fact about the marriage of Cecilia Massey was given me by my great uncle David J.Anderson. I will test its proof..".  Mrs. Tyler lived in Richmond, Va.,and addressed her  letter to ELA "My dear Cousin..'' Mrs. Tyler's great uncle .(wqt) David Anderson (AFR35) owned the old family Bible, which was sent to England to prove his title to (wz) William Anderson's estate. The Bible was never returned."

Somewhere in some family book, I have seen it said that Robert Anderson married Cecelia Massie in London, England.  But no reference was give for this and do not know if it is true. I have forgotten where  I saw it. I have wanted to check this out, but so far have not.  I done almost no research  in England so do not at present know where to look.

Robert Anderson, Jr. was a 1703 Vestryman of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent, and Justice of New Kent in 1714. From 1706 to 1716 Robert Anderson was a member of the vestry of St. Paul's parish and signed as Robert Anderson, Jr. Robert Anderson's death in 1716 is recorded in the St. Paul Parish vestry book.  The 727 acres became the "Goldmine" Plantation named after a passing stream.

His sons were underage at the time of his death and his family has been reconstructed from the deeds of his wife and her sons and the precessioning records of St. Paul's parish.

Edward L. Anderson in his book "Andersons of Goldmine" assigned many children to him that to me appear to belong to his brothers.

Notes for ? Jones:

"The Richmond and Manchester Advertiser"of 2 July 1796: " Benj. Toler, surv. ex. of John Jones, Cicely Anderson, admx. of Wm. Anderson, Nathaniel Anderson, admr. and Elkanah Talley and Mary, his wife, admrs. of Jn. Anderson (pltfs.) and Eliz. Jones, widow and relict of Jn. Jones, Laney Jones, Rich. Banks and Eliz., his wife, Chas. Lambert and Nancy his wife, Hardin Burnley and Geo. Brackenridge (defs.)."

Can anyone explain the relationships among these parties to the chancery court case? Is it possible that the mother of Wm. Anderson, Nathaniel Anderson and John Anderson was a member of the Jones Family; and that Richard Banks, Charles Lambert, Hardin Burnley and Geo. Brackenridge were married to sisters, who were daughters of John and Elizabeth Jones?

St. Paul's Parish Vestry

1 Oct 1707 - Pursuant to an order of the court dated July 28, 1707, appointing Mr. David Anderson & Samuel Waddy to clear the Pamonkey River on the south side thereof from Piping Tree to Hardings Landing, formerly Youels, they applying themselves to this vestry for assistance with instruments or materials to comply with the order of the court. This vestry has thought that this parish is not able to comply with that order.

Piping Tree is along the Pamunkey River in the northeast corner of the bend that occurs just above the border between current New Kent County and Hanover County.  It is downstream from Totoppotomeys Creek.  This bend sticks into KIng WIlliam County and suggests the reason so many records of this family reference a residence of King WIlliam County.

The St. Paul's parish vestry book survived from 1706 to the 1780's and there are precessionings in 1708 and 1711 and so on.  Robert Anderson. Sr, and Robert Anderson Jr. and Richard, David, John, Matthew and Thomas Anderson all appear in the 1708 precincts list all of them near each other between Crumps Creek and Tottopotomies Creek and Mechumps Creek to the north of current Mechanicsville, Virginia

This David is not traced well and one reason may be that he crossed to the North side of the  Pamunkey River and had land in both New Kent/Hanover and King William County.  A further examination of King William Records might provide further information on him.

Ruth ------, who married, (ca.1714), James Trice, was a daughter of Susanna Swann was a daughter of Susanna Swann. But there's some disagreement as to who her father may have been: Cornelius Dabney, (ca.1640-1693), or David Anderson. I tend to suspect she was David Anderson's daughter, based on later dates for her  descendants, but this could be wrong.

____________________________

Other research in Hanover Co. Wills rerecorded in 1868 (on motion of Wm Winston Dabney) show that Dorothy and James Trice were married as early as 1722 because they are mentioned in the will of Susanah Anderson of St Paul's Parish, Hanover Co. dated 4 March 1722. She devises "to grandson William Anderson" a young Negro which she lends to grandson's "father in law" [probably meaning stepfather] James Trice for benefit/education of sd William. Bequests to children: to son, Cornelius DabneyŠ to daughter Dorothy Trice wife of James Trice Š to daughter Mary Carr wife of Capt. Thomas Carr Š to son David Anderson. [Source: Will Book 1 p632.] That tells me that Dorothy Dabney Anderson and James Trice married as early as 4 March 1722 and Dorothy's son William was alive that date.

Notes for Richard Anderson:

Richard's existence is derived from St. Paul parish precessioning records and the 1704 rent roll. He is identified in the St, Paul's parish vestry book as responsible for the cures of two different individuals so I am assuming he was considered a doctor.

Curiously I have found no patents or deeds for him but he is listed as a land holder in the precessioning records.  He survived for a significant period in the St. Paul Parish precessioning records and it is possible that he had purchased a plantation and never moved from it.  He is superceded in those records by his widow Charity Anderson.  It is possible that his widow is the Charity Anderson listed as a daughter of Robert Anderson by Edward L. Anderson and others.  He lived in a precinct defined separate from his bothers but within one plantation of his brother Matthew.

This is Richard and his father and brothers.  The extra John is believed to be his uncle and died in 1706.

The St.

Notes for Charity Pouncey:

Notes for Pouncey Anderson:

Pouncey Anderson was believed by William Pope Anderson to be a grandson of Robert Anderson I, but no researcher to date has been able to prove from which son.  Of the six candidate fathers of the second generation, Robert, John, Matthew, Thomas, Richard and David we actually only know the children of Thomas from his 1757 will in Albemarle. Other evidence from deeds suggests the children of Robert, John, Matthew and David and therefore I have assigned Pouncey to Richard because Pouncey named a son Richard.  In addition the Holland family and Pouncey family precessioned land in 1731 and 1739 in St. Paul's parish adjacent Richard Anderson, whom I believe to be the son of Richard Anderson senior.  An examination of the widow of Richard Anderson, Charity Anderson, implies she was a Pouncey, in 1731 St. Paul's parish vestry book precessioning records she is listed in a small precinct wtih Anthony Pouncey.  Charity was a common Christian family name for the Pounceys, used in Virginia and South Carolina

Notes for John Anderson:

There is a write up of John Anderson's family in The Early Descendants of William Overton and Elizabeth Waters of Virginia, and Allied Families, by William Pope Anderson, 1938.  The information therein is thin and no supporting data is presented but the information has been incorporated in my notes.

John's connection to Robert is through the precessioning records of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, where he is superceded by his widow Sarah.

Notice that this dual entry indicate that there were two John Andersons in New Kent County at this early date.  One would have been the son of Robert Anderson.  The other died in 1705/6 as recorded in the St. Paul's parish vestry book and his children were placed under the care of the vestry. He may be the uncle of John.

Pat,

Just had the privelege of looking at you excellent website: Everett Anderson Memorial Collection, and want to thank you and share information on my ancestor, John Anderson, c.1670-1730, who died in Louisa Co, and who you list as child #7 of Robert Anderson and Cecelia Massie.

My own lineage, in brief, goes:

   1  John Anderson=Sarah Waddy

       2  Maj. Nelson Anderson (c.1714-1786-Hanover Co)=unknown wife

           3  Elizabeth Anderson=Waddy Thomson, Sr

4  Anderson Thomson=(1st cousin) Ann Clopton Anderson

[SEE BELOW]

5  David Henry Thomson=Catherine Mary Goll

6  Nelson Anderson Thomson=Mary Lucinda Davies

[SEE BELOW]

2  Ann Anderson (1708-1802)=David Crawford III

           3  David Crawford IV=Elizabeth Henderson

               4  Elizabeth Crawford=Nicholas Clayton Davies

                   5  Mayo Davies=Lucinda Taliaferro

6  Benjamin Taliaferro Davies=Mary Frances Shirkey

7  Mary Lucinda Davies=Nelson Anderson Thomson [REDUNDANT]

8  Catherine Mary Thomson=James Luke Boyle

9  James Thomson Boyle=Barbara Jean Simpson

                                        10 James David Boyle

       2  William Anderson=unknown wife

3  Col. Nelson Anderson (1735-1819, Louisa Co)=Frances Jackson

4  Ann Clopton Anderson=Anderson Thomson [REDUNDANT]

                    5  etc

Thus, as far as our family can tell, we descend from 3 of the 8 children of John Anderson.  I have a fairly good-sized descendancy of these people, and have collected about 800 or so descendants of Nicholas Clayton Davies.

My main concern is the parentage of John Anderson (your John4, Robert3, Richard 2, Richard1).

I would prefer to believe that he does in fact descend, as above, from Robert, as the genealogists in my family have believed for the past century; however, I have run into a lot of trouble trying to confirm it.

Robert Anderson I had a child named John, with little said about his descendants, but I couldn't tie him into my family.  Maybe you will be

able to.

In W.P. Anderson's 3 books, the major note on John is in "Early desc. of Wm. Overton, etc", p.35, and he says that Robert I's son John was born too late to have been the husband of Sarah Waddy, but I can't find any marriage date for Robert I or that of his son John.

My John and his wife apear to be the ones who were deeded land on 28 Jan 1696 from Samuel Waddy, and John's widow conveyed these 80 acres to John Thom(p)son (7 Aug 1735--Virginia County Records, by Crozier, VII:67).  In 1725 he received another grant of land in Hanover Co.  My working hypothesis is that he came from Scotland, and came here either before or after his 1700 marriage. One source claimed that the Thomas Anderson of co.Northumberland who established a shipyard at Gloucester Point in the 17th century, was the ancestor of the family in Virginia, and they are apparently unrelated to the Robert Andersons of Goldmine.

If you have any further ideas on John, I would be grateful for them.  If you would like me to send a printout or GEDCOM on anything I have, it would be a pleasure.

Thanks again for your great website.

Patrick, Thank you for your Anderson webpage - it is amazing.  I am looking

for information on Elkanah Anderson whose daughter, Miss ? Anderson married

William Harrelson, son of Paul Harrelson and Patience Lewis.  Elkanah and

Miss Anderson had a son named Elkanah Harrelson who married a cousin,

Elishebear Harrelson.  Elkanah Harrelson died before June 1781 of war

wounds.  Their son was Anderson Harrelson born about 1776 and died in

Hopkins County, Kentucky, in 1824.  The Harrelsons were in the New Kent,

Virginia area, also.  I had a note that Elkanah Anderson married a Sarah

Bradley, but the only record I have found to verify this is a deed listing

Elkanah's wife as Sarah.  In your copious notes, if you have any more

information on Elkanah Anderson's family, I would appreciate hearing from

you.  Again, thanks.  Betty

In 1708/09 lands of Capt. William Anderson were adjacent Robert Anderson, jr. and then transferred to Matthew Anderson relationship unconfirmed, apparently son of Robert Anderson, Sr.  This suggests that neighbors William and Matthew were brothers and descendents of Robert who had patented land along the Pamunkey River in the 1670's.  William lived just across the Pamunky River from his brothers and is mentioned in the St. Paul's Parish precessioning records as adjacent them.  I had for some time thought he might be a son of the William along the Rappahanock Road in King and Queen County but I now believe he is another son of Robert.

Note:

Dorothy Dabney bc 1685 was not married in 1699

In 1699 these four children "James Dabney, Geo. Dabney, Dorothy Dabney, and Sarah Dabney, recorded as devisees of Cornelius Dabney dec'd & due 700 acres to which is added of Low Land thereto adjoining 150 acres" in Pamunkey Neck. (Louis des Cognets, Jr., English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records, p. 59).

Dorothy married William Anderson aft 1699 but before 25 Apr 1701 -...give and grant unto WM. ANDERSON & DOROTHY his wife 179 1/2 acres of land lying and being in St. John's Parish in Pamunkey neck in King & Queen County bounded as followeth Beginning at a red Oake on Pounces Swamp and running east 21 degrees south 211 poles & 1/2 to a hiccory then south...land adj her sister Sarah's land and brother James Dabney's land Grant.

The following proves that Dorothy(Dabney)Anderson was in 1732 - Dorothy Trice:

17 May 1732  William WINSTON  to Cornelius DABNEY of King William Co., VA, Gentleman, for 5 shillings sells land in the  Pamunkey Neck, King William Co., it being a tract granted to Sarah DABNEY by patent bearing date 25 Apr 1701 and by the said Wm. WINSTON as son and heir to the said Sarah DABNEY, bounded by the south side of Poncey Swamp, Cornelius Dabney's land, Wormley's land, Dorothy Trice's land, and the water course of Poncey Swamp, paying yearly rent for one year. Wits. John Crowshaw, Richard Gregory, Jas. or Jos. Berkley, Jr. Acknowledged 18 May 1732, King William Co., VA.

Note: the above William Winston was William "Essex" Winston (1704-1781) son of William Winston II and Sarah Dabney..This Cornelius was the son of James Dabney and Ann Sherwood.

Dorothy Dabney Anderson/Trice was named as a daughter of the 2nd wife of Cornelius Dabney, Susanna (m 2nd Anderson) in her will dated 16th. day of March 1722.

Hanover County, Will Book 1, Court December 22, 1868 recorded by William Winston Dabney (after the destruction of Hanover Records during the Civil war)

Since Cornelius Dabney was still married to his first wife Edeith in 1678 from a letter dated: 29 Jun 1678   -  Cornelius Dabney to Colonel Moryson. [Virginia Colonial Records - VSL [from the public records office in London]

Survey Report No. 742, pg. 5,  00663]

Any children born to Susanna would be sometime after this 1678 date.  Dorothy was born probably 1685 - making her about 16 when she married.  Her sister Mary was born 22 Jan 1688 (from the Carr Bible)

Her son Dabney Anderson died in Caroline Co., Va. in 1732, James Trice his administrator (Caroline Co., Va. Order Book)

Children of William Anderson and Dorothy Dabney are:

38               i.    Elizabeth7 Anderson, born Abt. 1700 in New Kent County, Virginia.

39              ii.    Susannah Anderson, born Abt. 1702 in New Kent County, Virginia.

40             iii.    Dabney Anderson, born Bet. 1704 - 1710 in New Kent County, Virginia; died 1735 in King William County, Virginia.

There are other documents of interest to the Anderson family in this case, i.e. 1735 appraisal of Dabney Anderson's estate; and receipt dated 25 Feb 1736 "recieved of James Trice" Negroe man George as legacy from Dabney Anderson to Godney Trice and wife Judy Trice and to Jno Asburn and Sarah Ashburn one Negroe woman Phillis and her increase "legacy given us by our brother Dabney Anderson."

Hi Patrick:

Thanks for your info. I was curious to know if the will existed since several had said William's will was "proven" in 1717. I'll check the "The Richmond Virginia Standard" issue you suggest and William Pope Anderson's book/notes.

I neglected to say where I found William Anderson's 1719 inventory, it was in Louisa County, VA Chancery Case papers at the Library of Virginia. Several cases between the Trices and Charles Crenshaw beginning in about 1789, include many depositions and some documents on William Anderson, Dorothy Anderson and second husband James Trice, sons William Anderson and Dabney Anderson, as well as Dabney's sisters: Judith Trice and husband Godney/Godwin and Sarah Ashburn and husband John Ashburn. Possibly a daughter, Mary, married John Trice then Henry Edwards. The cases are dated 1801 and 1804 (ending dates of the cases) but some documents in them are dated 1719, 1720, 1735, 1736 and 1769. The documents mention several counties: Hanover, Caroline, Albemarle, and King William.

Thanks again for your help.

________________________________

The William ANDERSON and Dorothy DABNEY you cite certainly seem to be the couple of the same names cited by Rubyann, and that they had among their issue sons named William and Dabney and a daughter named Sarah seems beyond dispute. It also seems certain that William ANDERSON's widow Dorothy DABNEY married James TRICE, that James TRICE became the administrator of the estate of his step-son Dabney ANDERSON, and that among the legatees of Dabney's estate were his sister Sarah ANDERSON and her husband John ASHBURN.

The last proven progenitor of my ASHBURN line is Dabney Anderson ASHBURN, b abt 1755 VA or NC, d aft 1801 TN. If our Dabney Anderson ASHBURN is descended from the John ASHBURN and Sarah ANDERSON cited above, there is likely to have been at least one ASHBURN male generation between John and Sarah and our Dabney Anderson, as the Sarah who was the sister of the Dabney ANDERSON daughter of William ANDERSON and Dorothy DABNEY is reported to have been b (deleted error), or about 80 years before our Dabney Anderson ASHBURN. The given name Anderson recurs often through the generations descending from Dabney Anderson ASHBURN.

Can you shed any light on exactly how, if at all, our ASHBURNs are connected to your ANDERSONs and DABNEYs?

G. Chamberlayne, The Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover  County, Virginia 1706-1786,  (Clearfield Company, Inc.; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, Maryland 1999).) Abt. 1707.  She was born Aft. 1685 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1743 in Louisa County, Virginia.

Notes for Matthew Anderson:

The birth date of Matthew has been corrected to reflect the fact that he does not appear in the 1704 rent roll and may differ from the one given by William Pope Anderson in Anderson - Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants of William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Families, by William Pope Anderson, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1945.  Matthew's existence is derived from a study of early precessioning records of St. Paul's Parish which associate him with Robert Anderson I.

Matthew married a Cecilia whose surname is unproven but appears to have been Massie.  This is determined from the precessioning records.  Follow-up researchers should be cautious that the occurence of Cecilia's name in the early parish records may have caused early researchers to both create a Cecilia as a sister and to give his father Robert a wife by the name of Cecilia.  However from records that I have seen it is only clear that this one widow named Cecilia existed.

In 1708/09 Matthew acquired the lands of Capt. William Anderson. This suggests that Matthew was born before 1687.  Matthew is last listed in Hanover land records in 1715/16 after which his widow Cecilia is listed in 1719 as land owner until 1743. Matthew therefore died between 1715 and 1719. More likely close to 1719 as in 1719 Gilbert Gibson was given a patent adjacent to Matthew and Thomas Anderson in New Kent County.

Matthew appears to have died young and likely only had a few children. There was a tendency to claim all the Andersons in the Hanover tax lists as belonging to Robert Anderson, Jr., a tradition started by Edward L. Anderson early in the 20th century.

Matthew died before his sons were of age and as a result we have no official record of their names.  I have seen no will for him.

In 1735 James Anderson precesions for Cecelia's land and is therefore likely a son born before 1714. Edward L. Anderson listed this James as a son of Matthew's brother Robert. Because of Matthew's early date of death it seems more likely James was a son under age at his father's death. I have seen someone's penciled note in the Va. Sate Library implying that Bartelot Anderson was the son of Matthew. It is known by record that Bartelot had a brother Charles from land patents and and from a surviving 1747 letter.

The Bartelot/Matthew Association comes from

Goochland County Wills & Deeds 1736-1742, page 415

12/04/1740 Valentine Bostick of Hanover Co to John Woodson of Goochland Co

for 40 pounds 400a in St. James Parish, on north side of Appomattox River, granted by patent to John Bostick, dec'd 8 Sept. 1736 and by said said John sold to Valentine Bostick; bounded by William Bostick late of Goochland Co., John Cahfin, Edmund Hodges, Willaim Arnold; with all houses. WIt: Nowel Burton, Matthew Anderson, Bartelot Anderson

If Bartelot was a son of Matthew then it is sure that Matthew also had a son Charles.   Matthew the elder had died by 1719 and the Matthew of the above record would have to be a Matthew, Jr.  In 1755 Bartelot acts as the executor for Matthew Anderson, Jr.

Notes for Cecilia Massie:

The widow Cicilia Anderson is prominent in the precessioning records of St. Paul's parish.

Cicilia Anderson, widow

11/13/1721     400 acres        Hanover County

N New Found River, adj. William Rice.

1724 adj. John Stanley, David Crawford

Thomas Massie, Gent. of New Kent

11/02/1726     400 acres        Hanover County

N New Found River, adj. William Rice, granted to Cecelia Anderson, widow 11/13/1721 on condition of seating

1727 adj. Charles Chiswell

Cicilia's association with the Massie family suggests that she was the Cecilia Massie of tradition in the Anderson family.  Unfortunately previous researchers have variously claimed her to be a daughter of Robert, 1st, 2nd and/or his wife.  I have only been able to find evidence that his one Cecilia, widow, was a member of the family.

David Anderson of Albemarle resided on the 1721 patent of Cecelia Anderson, widow and I am using this letter as my proof that he was her youngest son.

Children of Matthew Anderson and Cecilia Massie are:

46               i.    Matthew7 Anderson (Source: William Pope Anderson, Anderson - Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants of William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Fa,  (Cincinnati, Ohio; 1945.).), born Abt. 1708 in New Kent County, Virginia; died Bef. 1752 in Hanover County, Virginia.  He married Frances ? Bef. 1730; died November 15, 1768.

Patrick,

I have had this abstract of a court case for many years and do not remember where I found it.  Have you seen it ?  Just what does it mean ? The dates at the end appear to me to be the dates it was published in a newspaper.

Harry F. Anderson

"At a General Court held at the Capital, in Williamsburg, April 14, 1755. Richard Dobson and Frances his wife, Plaintiffs

       against

 William Taylor, Gentleman, Defendant,

Upon an appeal from a decree of the Court of Hanover County obtained by the Defendant against the Plaintiffs and Matthew Anderson, John Goodwin and Mary his wife, John Anderson and Lucy Anderson, infants, and John Scott, Bartlett Anderson and John Anderson, executors &c of Matthew Anderson deceased that the Plaintiffs had not any right to dower of and in the houses and lots in the bill mentioned, that James Littlepage, John Symme and Reuben Skelton, Gentleman, should sell the said houses and lots at public auction ... It is the opinion of the court that the said decree Is erroneous. (6je55:42; 13Je55:42; 2OJe55:42; 27Je55:42) "

The 1747 family bible of John Goodwin Jr, lists these deaths:

Frances Dobson d 15 Nov 1768

John Anderson d 2 Dec 1760.

I think that the John Goodwin with wife Mary mentioned above is the same as John Goodwin, Jr, who owned the bible.

John Goodwin Jr. had at least two daughters:

Frances Goodwin b cir 1748 m John Meaux or Meux of New Kent Co., Va. & Mary Goodwin who probably married a Horsley.

AH! but they must not have had that newspaper article & the 1747 bible

This is my THEORY

Matthew Anderson had a wife Frances who m 2nd Rich Dobson

She is the Frances Dobson who died 15 Nov 1768

Anderson Children:

Mathew Anderson - adult in 1755 (born before 1734)

Mary Anderson b 1730 or earlier  m John Goodwin -married  before 1747

Frances Goodwin born before 1748  m 23 Feb 1764 (bible in her family)

        Mary Goodwin

John & Lucy Anderson - born after 1735 ("infants in 1855)

John Goodwin died 28 Oct 1762

Either Mary ( the widow Goodwin) or Mary (the daughter Goodwin) m __ Horsley & is

the Mary Horsley who  d 10 May 1773.

Also a John Anderson died 2 Dec 1760.

47              ii.    Bartelot Anderson (Source: William Pope Anderson, Anderson - Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants of William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Fa,  (Cincinnati, Ohio; 1945.).), born Abt. 1710 in New Kent County, Virginia; died 1761 in Hanover County, Virginia.  He married Mary Cosby Abt. 1740; born Abt. 1715 in New Kent County, Virginia; died in Hanover County, Virginia.

Notes for Bartelot Anderson:

1734       Mary Dowell appts as her attorney Bartlet Anderson to acknowledge to Samuel Dalton her dower right to 400a sold by husband John Dowell. St. Paul Parish Vestry book

Edward L. Anderson early in the 20th century placed Bartelot Anderson as the son of Robert Anderson, Jr. In the 1980's I had seen someone's penciled note in the Va. Sate Library implying that Bartelot was the son of Matthew (Robert's brother). It is known by record that Bartelot had a brother Charles from land patents and records in Prince Edward County and from a surviving 1747 letter.  If this is the case then Charles Anderson the brother of Robert Anderson, III and Charles Anderson the brother of Bartelot need to be one and the same person.  However an examination of Robert's brother Charles who lived on 335 acres near Totopotomys Creek in Hanover County and Charles Anderson who patented lands in Prince Edward County with Bartelot indicate that they are unlikely to be the same individual.  Therefore I have concluded in 2003 that Bartelot is likely the son of Matthew Anderson as claimed by the unknown scribler.

My research shows that the Bartelot/Matthew Association comes from:

The earlier generation Matthew was dead before 1719. Matthew of this record was likely his son as he appears in the same precinct in St. Paul's Parish as his mother Cecilia. Bartelot witnesses the 1733 deeds from Mary Anderson nee Overton to her son John Anderson and Charles Anderson.  Because he appears on many documents of the cousins I cannot yet confirm that Bartelot is a son of Matthew, but as he acts as the executor for Matthew Anderson, Jr. it seems likely.  Bartelot Anderson was an early Virginia Lawyer. See his many advertisements regarding the settlement of estates in the "Virginia Gazette and General Advertiser" (the Williamsburg colonial newspaper).

Notes for Colonel Charles Anderson:

Both Charles Anderson and his brother Bartelot Anderson patent lands adjacent each other in the area now Prince Edward County.  It is likely that this Charles Anderson is the one who served in the House of Burgesses from Prince Edward County, Virginia and was prominent in the founding of the County.   Charles Anderson patented lands in western Amelia County, Virignia now Prince Edward County in 1747 and 1751.   There is a 1747 letter from Mr. Jerdone identifying Charles as the brother of Bartelot. Likely he used the land as a speculator selling it off for profit and also granted some of it to sons of his.  He may have had additional children than those listed.  He survived until after 1760 and his will may yet be found.

Notes for James Anderson:

There is supposition that James Anderson of early Hanover was a son of Matthew Anderson because he supercedes his parents in the Hanover precessioning records of St. Paul's Parish.      James Anderson is mentioned as replacing Cecelia Anderson in 1735 and Thomas Anderson in 1741 as a precessioner of lands in St. Pauls's parish vestry book.

By 1764 James has sold his father's land to Ralph Crutchfield.  He either dies or merges into the sea of James Andersons of Virginia.  If you are looking for him I might check out the New RIver area where his mother got the patent in 1721 since it was probably intended for her sons.

50              v.    David Anderson (Source: William Pope Anderson, Anderson Family Records,  (W. F. Notes for David Anderson:

There is some dispute over the correct parentage of David.  He is not identified in the St. Paul parish precessioning records with the Robert Anderson family by William Pope Anderson; however the 1735 precessioning record does name a David Anderson I believe to be him. Edward L. Anderson believed him to be Robert's son, William Pope Anderson was not sure.  If the reader wishes to be very cautious, you might look at David the son of Thomas Anderson and Agnes Gannaway. David the son of Thomas Anderson was a younger son and not likely to be the one in the 1735 record. It has been reported to me that David settled on the patent on the New Found River of Cecilia Anderson, and if this is the case he is likely the youngest son of Matthew Anderson and Cecelia born 1716-1719.  He does name a daughter Cecelia.  In addition his descendents have written that Cecelia Massie was their ancestor.

Hey, Patrick--

Thought you might be interested in something I found in the GenForum.

I was looking for info on Elizabeth Mills who married David Anderson. I can't copy/paste so I've typed what was posted Oct. 9, 1998 by Betty S. Cravens ([email protected]). Check out their 7th child!!

"Nicholas Mills, Jr. b. ca. 1670 m. 1691/92 Ann Clopton, dau. William Clopton and Ann Booth. He died 1741 St. Martin's Parish Hanover Co. VA

5. Robert m. Dec 1767 Mary Hopkins

6. Ann m. bef 1741 Thomas Jackson

7. Elizabeth m. ca. 1735 to David Anderson son Robert Anderson and Mary Elizabeth Overton.

If interested, Ann Clopton's line is well documented and takes you to the Plantagenets, sorry the throne is already taken."

Don't know exactly her sources, but this seems to confirm what you expected re: the parentage of David Anderson.

Abt. 1733.  She died Bef. 1757.

Notes for Thomas Anderson:

Thomas' birth date has been corrected to reflect the fact that he does not appear as a land holder in the 1704 rent roll and may differ from the writings of William Pope Anderson. Anderson - Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants fo William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Families, by William Pope Anderson, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1945.

The St.

In 1719 Gilbert Gibson was given a patent adjacent to Matthew and Thomas Anderson in New Kent County.  Thomas' association with Robert Anderson I derives from an analysis of precessioning records in St. Paul's Parish published in the book above.  Thomas was a church warden for St. Pauls Parish in the 1720's.

Thomas and Charles Anderson post bond regarding construction of Chickahominy Bridge

Thomas Anderson's first wife died betwen 1725 and 1734.  Before 1734 he remarried to Mary and began experimenting with western lands. In 1733 Thomas was replaced as a church warden of St. Paul's parish and ordered to surrender the moneys of the parish to Thomas Merriweather. He continues as a vestryman until 1737 when he was removed as vestryman.  In 1739 a nephew Thomas Anderson replaces him as vestryman until 1754.  As can be seen in the records below he was dabbling in western lands during this period and even spent some time in jail in 1738.  By 1748 he was firmly entrenched on lands in Albemarle County.

Hello Pat:

Pat here! Boy that could get confusing, but we won't let it.  Thank you so very much for the research notes on Elizabeth, and the directions to the two web sites. Having only read the notes at this time of night (10:47 PM) it really does clarify my question regarding Reynard &

Thomas.

Besides the connection through Thomas, what caught my eye immediately, was my connection to John Gannaway & John Gannaway II or Jr. as witnesses to Thomas' 10/25/1757 will.  John I is my 6th G grandfather; John II is my 5th G grandfather.  We carry the Gannaway line from Jacapo di Genoa & Leonora di Medici in 1544 to my grandmother, Mary Pearl (Gannaway) Black.

It would appear that Agnus (Gannaway) Anderson could be an elder sister (by four years) of John I, the daughter of Marmaduke & Henrietta

(Campmartin) Gannaway of London.

I am looking froward to going through the web sites.  Again, our best regards; we'll be in touch.  Please let us know if you would like any

information on the Gannaways, Woodsons, or any other early family groups (I'm sure we'll find a few more connections).

Hi Patrick

Saw your name on Anderson Gen Forum.  Am descendant of Thomas Anderson of Hanover---his daughter Elizabeth married John Woodson.  Their daughter Ann married Moore Lumpkin---do you have these descendants.

Some years ago, I saw reference to this Anderson Family and wondered how Thomas is connected toRobert and Richard et. al.  Was there a will, or is there something more like a land record, or is it proximity.  Also, I wonder about the name of his wife Agnes Gannaway.  There is a Gannaway family in Prince Edward that was also connected to Woodsons and Lumpkins.  What is the source for her surname.  Could she be connected to John of Prince Edward?

Also,  Elizabeth, daughter of David Anderson of Buckingham married 1) to Washington Walker and then to Moore  Jr. Lumpkin about 1809.  She moved to Tennessee.  He sister Susan married Michael Lancaster of Prince Edward.  Is there any connectino to Thomas Anderson.  Actually I was hoping to see if Elizabeth and Susan had any other siblings.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I just got this:

"I also have a copy of a book called "Woodsons and their Connections" by

Henry Morton Woodson 1915.  It was in the LDS Family History Library in Salt

Lake City.

On page 25 it says "Richard, born about 1662, at Curles in Henrico County,

married Anne Smith, daughter of Obadiah Smith.  In 1729 he made a deed to

James Hambleton, for land in Henrico, being part of a tract granted to his

father Robert Woodson in October 1704.  As he was about 67 years old at the

time of making this deed, he probably died within a few years thereafter."

Then he listed the children as such:

i.  Richard, Jr.4 (Richard3, Robert2, John1) born about 1690 in Henrico.

Arriving at the age of young manhood, he located in Goochland where he

patented and otherwise acquired such immense tracts of land that he came to

be known as "Baron" Woodson, He later built his home "Poplar Hill" in Prince

Edward, Co.  He was married in about 1715 to Anne Madeleine Michaux,

daughter of Abraham Michaux and Susanne Rochette, Huguenots who had settled

at Manikin Town in 1701.  (You should also check those names on Google

search.   Their story is amazing.  There is still a church in Manikin Town,

VA with plaques with their names on it.)

ii. Obediah - born about 1712 in Henrico married in 1734 to Constance

Watkins, daughter of John Watkins "the Tray Maker."  Obediah held the rank

of captain and commanded a company of militia as shown by a letter addressed

to him by Gov. Dinwiddie and found in the Virginia Historical Collection,

(Dinwiddie Papers).

iii.  John born about 1697 in Henrico and married probably about 1720 to

Elizabeth Anderson, dau. of Thomas Anderson of Hanover County.

iv. Elizabeth born about 1699 in Henrico where it appears she spent her

entire life.  She was twice married first to Thomas Morton about 1718.  He

died in 1731 and his will was proved "First monday in April, 1731,"  and

names wife Elizabeth and 5 children.  On Sep 20, 1740 Elizabeth Woodson

Morton of Henrico, made a deed to her children, Thomas Morton, John Morton,

Ann Morton, Judith Morton and nephew Samuel Morton, brother to Joseph

Morton.  It was after making this deed that she was married, second to

Edmond Goode.

v.  Judith born about 1703 in Henrico, was married about 1722 to Jacob

Michaux son of Abraham Michaux & Susanne Rochette, Huguenots of Manikin Town

in Goochland Co.  Jacob Michaux was born in Amsterdam, Holland in 1700.

vi.  Mary, born about 1707 in Henrico and was married to Richard Truman.

vii.  Agnes born 27 Feb 1711 in Henrico and died 10 Mar 1802.  She was

married about 1730 to Joseph Morton who was born 1709 and died 28 June 1782.

  He settled at Little Roanoke Bridge in Charlotte Co., Virginia about 1745;

was a surveyor by occupation and secretary to Mr. Randolph.  He was founder

of Briery Presbyt. Church, was first ruling elder and first trustee.  Was

trustee visitor and manager of Hampden Sidney College; justice of the peace

of Charlotte Co., 1769 and member of the committee of safety in Charlotte

Wonder what proof there is that Susanna m John Williams in Goochland  Co VA

and died in Shelby Co KY?  It's possible she's the Susanna who married

Thomas Williams d. 1806 Goochland, though if so, she predeceased him.

Curious about source for Susanna having married John Williams. Can you

identify the Roger Williams who witnessed the will of Thomas Anderson in

1757 Albemarle?  Thomas ans Susannah Williams had a son, Roger, and he

probably had a brother, Roger as well.

I have some info from another Anderson researcher placing Susanna as a wife

of Thomas, but I cannot prove or disprove John or Thomas?

Is there a relationship between Thomas' father, Robert, and Reynard

Anderson?  Don't know if you've gone back to England to see if they are

related or not. They seem to move among some of the same circles, but that

could be geography, more than relationships. However, I've long come to the

conclusion, that while proximity doesn't make for DNA relationships, most

often one did not come to this country alone, without "kith and kin".

This is spurred by a 30 year search to find the grandparents of Charles

anderson Williams, s/o Samuel Williams and Lucy Lewis of Bedford/Campbell Co

VA , later Botetourt Co VA .  I think he may be Richard, Robert, Thomas,

Susanna m Thomas Williams, Samuel, Anderson, Charles Anderson Williams b.

1836 Lunenburg Co VA d. 29 Aug 1908, m. 10 Jan 1854 Montgomery Co VA.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

We think that Susanna married Thomas Williams and that Roger Williams was perhaps the oldest son, still in the area..  Among thier children, there is a Samuel Williams m. Susanna Ligon. Thier oldest son, named Anderson Williams (1767), is most likely the father of my Samuel Williams b. 1798/99 d. bet 1880/1900 in Botetourt, m Lucy Lewis in Campbell Co VA 1821. Thier son, Charles Anderson Williams was my GGGgrandfather (b 1823 d. 1880/1 Botetourt Co VA).

Linda Stuffelbean has sent me a file which tends to document most of these things, though Thomas Williams didn't leave a lot of records to work with. While he and Susanna seem to have had a number of children, perhaps as many as 17, the records he left tend to be indicative of a man who couldn't handle his financial matters well.  He spent a good deal of time in Cumberland Co court, and on more than one occasion, Charles Williams and John Gannaway were the security for his debts. Charles moved on to Pittsylvania Co where he married twice. Samuel paid the tax for his father in 1786, indicating that Thomas may not have been able to pay for himself.  It's possible that Thomas married again in Cumberland Co in 1790 in Campbell Co VA, as the father of the bride more or less disowned his disobedient daughter.  It's not Thomas, of either Roger or Mathias, as it's possible a young girl married a very old man, with no money.   But that's pure speculation. I've seen her father's will, but not his estate settlement.  Perhaps finding any estate settlement for Thomas might answer the question, but I think it's possible that Roger was the son of Thomas, witnessing the will of his grandfather, Thomas Anderson. Thomas Williams is known to have had a brother Matthias from Cumberland Co records.   I can find nothing to support a marriage to a  John Williams, except on the web, and I suspect that's coming from your web site. Would like to find proof somewhere, to prove or disprove either Thomas or John as the husband of Susanna. IF it's Thomas, I  can document four of the kids and I believe Linda can document all of them, but I don't have all of her publication.

Thanks

>Patrick -

Have I seen your webpage? Indeed, your webpage, which I found in early June, was what gave me link I needed to researching this family. <U>You have a great webpage</U>.  You have worked very hard on it and I have been recommending it to other Anderson researchers.

I traced the ancestry of Mary Spencer (wife of Richard Anderson) back to the le Despencers and D'abbetots in the 11th century.  You probably have this information, but I'm including it in this email just in case.

But I haven't got any further info on the Andersons.  I also would love to have more on Agnes Gannaway and Susanna Bowles(she married William Hughes, the son of Willam Hughes and Frances Anderson).  And the biggest mystery of them all is the da___ Cecelia Massie thing.  I can't take her line anywhere, cause nobody can decide who her parents were.  I've 'bout decided that it was D (probably David) and Lucretia Massie.  But when you are not sure of something, you hesitate to take it further.

Now, I'm descended from this family on two sides.  From Frances Anderson and William Hughes and from Pouncey Anderson and Elizabeth Holland ( Her line goes way back to the Duttons and the Molyneux'. I think I'm going to be able to connect her to the deHolands eventually.)

We should all really appreciate the research that has gone into your work, mainly because the Richards, Roberts and Williams are all so confusing.  I, for one, want to say thank you for sharing it.  And I also want to ask your permission to quote some of your notes in my pedigree, which I plan to print and share with my cousins.  I also would like to develop my own webpage, so I can get some more help with this. Your notes speak for themselves; they are not controversial and are very honest about the authenticity of the information. Please let me know if it's alright to use them.

[snip]

Thanks for contacting me.  Let me know if you are interested in the Holland line. As I find out more on this family, I'll be glad to share with you and would hope that you would be obliged to do the same for me.

1755    Thomas Anderson Jr and Sarah of Lunenburgh sell land in Cumberland

__________________________________

These references to Thomas as Thomas Anderson Junior indicates that his fathers name was likely Thomas and the reference to lands in Cumberland associate him with the children of Thomas Anderson and Agnes Gannaway. Goochland County records also refer to Thomas Anderson Jr.

After 1750 Thomas Anderson owned a plantation on the North side of the Roanoke River, on the other side was James Mitchell.  Thomas' land bordered on Henry Sage near Eastland's Creek.  During this period he also served as a overseer (as appears in the Mecklenburg tax rolls) for the Bluestone Creek estates of William Byrd II (Treasurer of the Colony of Virginia).  William Byrd was granted those lands in the 1730's as payment for his personal financing and leadership of the survey of the Virginia and North Carolina Border in 1728.  Virginia Historical publications have reprinted his report of that expedition.  This places Thomas Anderson in Lunenburg County. Thomas Anderson was present at the court formation of both Lunenburg County and Mecklenburg County.

Later James Mitchell would sell his land to Edmund Taylor from Caroline and Orange County, Virginia.  Thomas Anderson sold the properties at the river bank concerned with the ferry across the Roanoke to Taylor in 1762.  It would appear that in the period 1742 to 1760 Thomas was concentrating on improvements to the Colonial Post Road where it past through Virginia.  Both the bridges he and his father, built over the Chicahominy and Appomatox Rivers and this Ferry over the Roanoake were critical improvements to this post road.         This ferry was later known as Taylor's Ferry and was a critical point of operations during the revolutionary war, although no battle took place there.  All supplies and troops to the southern army passed here. Virginia Governor Thomas Jefferson ordered that no Virginia wagons were to cross the Roanoke River south of Taylor's ferry for fear that they would not be returned. Horses for the army were pastured here and a magazine was built for the accumulation of military stores.  This magazine continued to be used as a barn through the post Civil War era and it appears to have been located on Thomas Anderson's property. When General Gates army marched south under instructions from George Washington after the disasters at Charleston and Savannah, Gates found that the ferry boats across the Roanoke could not carry his 12 pound cannon, so these were left and built into the defenses of Taylor's Ferry.  Examination of British Army corresondence between Cornwallis and Tarleton reveals that they debated the benefit of attacking Taylor's Ferry, but considered it too well defended by the Mecklenburg militia, at times under the command of Major James Anderson (Thomas' son) to risk the action.

This ferry is flooded today by Bugg's Island Lake.  The magazine would be located upon the ridge overlooking this ferry.  The road to the ferry (currently Va Route 705) passes out of Boydtown, Virginia directly south from the old Randolph Macon College Building.  This route was the main road North South in the period 1760 to 1830, and was supplanted in this roll only after this period with the increasing influence of the Skipwith family and the introduction of the railroad.

Thomas Anderson's will is filed in Mecklenburg County in Will Book 1, on page 331.  It is dated 12/04/1779 and recorded 05/08/1780.  He names his wife Sarah Anderson, children Frances Taylor, Sarah Jones, James Anderson, Martha Jones, Susanna Lewis, Mary Lewis, Thomas Anderson, Anne Anderson, Lucy Anderson, Henrietta Maria Anderson, son-in-law William Taylor.  Evidence suggests that William Taylor had married Elizabeth Anderson a daughter of Thomas, but she was deceased prior to 1779.

Dear Patrick,

I am still amazed by your depth of knowledge of the Andersons of Virginia.  I think you have presented a convincing picture of my Thomas Anderson ancestor and appreciate you sending it on.

For accuracy of your information, I do not own the diary of my great-great grandfather William Henry Holcombe, MD (b. May 29, 1825, d. Nov. 29, 1893).  The diary is a permanent part of the Southern Historical Collection, Manuscript # 1113,  CB #3926, Wilson Library,  The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3926.  A typed copy of the nearly 250 pages can be obtained on request.  Your letter led me to reread some of the diary, particularly the autobiography part written in 1892, and it was so enjoyable to read I thought I would share some of it with you.

"At the first roll of the revolutionary drum in 1775, the sons of the soldiers of Culloden rushed into the rebel army.  My grandfather, Philemon Holcombe, about 18 years of age at that time, ran away from Hampton Sidney College, without the knowledge or consent of  parents or faculty and enlisted for the war.  He served the whole eight years of that momentous struggle without wavering a moment in his fidelity to the cause.  He shared all its hardships and anxieties, its defeats and its triumphs.

"He was with Gates and Greene in their Carolina campaigns.  He fought at Guilford Courthouse side by side with Capt. Thomas Watts whose grand-daughter was married to one of his grandsons 60 years afterward.  He was in Gen. Harry Lee's Light Horse at Brandywine and Germantown.  He rose from the ranks to the position of Major and was promoted to a Colonelcy after serving as aid-de-camp to Gen. Lafayette at the siege of Yorktown.  He was present when the noble Frenchman scornfully refused to open or even receive a special letter addressed to him by the traitor Benedict Arnold, and he saw Lord Cornwallis surrender his sword, an event which virtually closed the struggle.

"He used to tell how Lafayette once tried to utilize the turkey buzzard as an article of food, when the comissary department was reduced to desperation - "I had no absurd antipathy to the American Turkey,"he said.  "I put him fairly on his merits - I roasted him, I baked him, I stewed him, I fried him, but confidentially - he is no good!"

"When Lafayette re-visited America in 1824 and was honored with ovations, such as only Washington could have received, throughout the length and breadth of the land, my grandfather, then 67 years of age, left his quiet farm and took his eldest daughter Mrs. Sarah Ambler and his youngest son, then quite a lad, to call upon him at Richmond.  They were cordially received by the illustrious visitor; the young Beverly Lafayette Holcombe was duly presented, and General Lafayette complimented this party by gracefully leading out Mrs. Ambler for the first dance at the grand ball given in his honor.  My grandfather was so delighted with his old compatriot in arms, that he followed him all the way to New York, no easy matter in those days of slow and difficult travel, and waved his last adieus to him as the vessel which bore the nation's guest back to France drifted away from the Battery.

When the war was over Col. Holcombe devoted himself successfully to agricultural pursuits, and was particularly interested in the rearing and improvement of blooded stock.  His fine horses were raced upon many a race track in eastern Virginia, such being the fashion among the first gentlemen of that day.  Although horse-racing, card-playing and brandy drinking were the habits, we would now say the vice of the best society of the period.  My grandfather never committed excesses of any kind.  No persuasions could induce him, to the day of his death at the age of 77 to deviate from his old army custom of taking three small glasses of "grog" every day, one just before each meal.

One fine day somewhere in the eighties of the last century young Col. Philemon Holcombe mounted his finest charger and rode away to a neighboring county, intending to pay his addresses to a certain young lady with whom he had formed a very pleasant acquaintance.  There he met another young lady visiting the one he went especially to see, who proved more fascinating than her hostess and carried off the prize - thus unknowingly constituting herself my grandmother.

This lady, Lucy Maria Anderson, was the medium through whom the royal blood of the House of Hapsburg is said to flow in our veins.  Somewhere in the first third of the last century a distinguished couple exiled from Austria located at Charles City, Va., Baron Hardimann and his beautiful and accomplished wife, Henriette Marie, a niece of Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria and cousin of the ill-fated Marie Antoinette of France.  The Baron had been involved in some revolutionary attempt, and the punishment of death was commuted to banishment to America for life.

[Editors Note: Date:      11/30/99 9:35:36 PM Eastern Standard Time; From: [email protected] (Terri Black) informant advises that the information above connecting the Hardiman family with the Hapsburgs is incorrect and that more accurate infomation can be found on The Poythress family wonderful web site, with a chapter dedicated to the Hardyman's & their early roots in America, all solidly documented.

http://www1.minn.net/~atims/hardyman.html ]

"A daughter of this couple named after her mother but anglicized to Henrietta Maria married a Capt. Clarke of the British Navy.  A daughter of these parties named Henrietta Elizabeth, was married to Beverly Anderson[editors note: References in a descendants diary refer to him as "Beverly" Anderson.  I have heretofore assigned him that middle name, but to date have found no other record substantiating it. All VA records of note refer to him as Thomas.], whose name stands upon the old records as "gentleman and landholder."  Their daughter, Lucy Maria, became the bride of my grandfather.  The portrait of Henriette Marie Hardimann, a fully detailed account of the family descent in all its branches written by my aunt, Mrs. Sarah Ambler, and many valuable letters and documents were destroyed by fire at the burning of Columbia.  They were in the possession of Mrs. Lucy Holcombe Pickens the wife of the Governor of South Carolina at that time and a grand-daughter of Philemon and Lucy Maria Holcombe.

"My grandmother Holcombe was a lady of fine physique and strongly marked character.  She was a grand old-fashioned Virginia housekeeper and that means a great deal to those acquainted with the social customs and immense hospitalities of that period.  She was a superb manager of her servants, and we may add, sotto voce, of her husband.  She was such a srict disciplinarian that she is said to have horse-whipped one of her sons for some act of disobedience, when he was eighteen years of age.  It is through her side of the house that the Rev. Dr. Samuel Anderson of St. Louis was our cousin.  He was breakfasting with me in New Orleans when we received the terrible news of President Lincoln's assassination, and we agreed in the opinion that it would prove a great calamity to the Southern people.  Grand-nephews of my grandmother were also Col. Beverly Jones (the Beverly from his grandfather Beverly Anderson) who was killed in command of an Alabama regiment, and his brother James Alfred Jones of Richmond, one of the most distinguished lawyers in Virginia.

My grandfather was independent and his wife was rich, so they lived in convivial, hospitable style.  When one fortune was frittered away, Mrs. Holcombe received another by the will of a bachelor brother.  The old colonel was exceedingly popular and highly respected.  Some warm friends once wished to have him nominated for Congress, but he declined the proposed honor, saying that he had always been regarded by his friends and neighbors as an honorable, respectable man, but if he entered the political arena, it would soon be discovered that he was one of the greatest rascals in the state, a satire upon the bitter political spirit which prevailed in what we call "the good old times."

Hope you enjoyed this!                                               Sincerely, Warwick Aiken

Notes for Sarah Clark:

Sarah Clark, the daughter of James Clark and Henritta Maria Hardyman.   Consider the will of Richard Clarke of Raleigh Parish, Amelia County written on August 29, 1748 and probated January 23, 1752 and filed on page 75 of Will Book One of Amelia County.  In it he appoints Francis Anderson as one of three executors.  He also names Frances Hardeman Clark the daughter of his brother James Clark in the will.  These points are significant because this is the sister in the Clark family of Sarah Clark the wife of Thomas Anderson of Mecklenburg County.  Thomas Anderson was born in New Kent County Virginia and it is somewhere on the Goochland/Amelia border that he met and married his wife Sarah Clark.

Dear Patrick,

As you can see from the attached gedcom file, I am a descendent of James Anderson, the son of Thomas of Albemarle and Agnes Gannaway.  Our family still owns about a thousand acres of James and Charles+'s land, including that at one time owned by Peter Francisco.

The house James built before 1750 is still lived in and I have a large number of old documents stored there.  I have sifted through them for about six months now while recovering from an accident.  I would appreciate your educating me on what evidence you would like to see to place Sarah Weldon Anderson as the daughter of Francis Anderson, to sort out the wives of James and James, Jr., and to integrate the "Scott's Anderson" connection.  The father of Betty Anderson, Robert BakerertBaker, is known for the Kentucky long rifle, and her grandfather, John Thompson is the famous Presbyterian Minister who arranged financial assistance for Samuel Davies education. Andersons kept records from the meeting house which became Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1754 with Samuel Davies as its first pastor.  An Anderson relative was clerk of the session from 1754 to 1954 when my grandfather Francis Sidney Anderson resigned.

Thanking you so much for all you have done for Anderson genealogy and hoping to meet you in person and take you out to dinner.  Call anytime at 540-785-4226, my home in Fredericksburg, VA.

I am sincerely,

I am seeking to discover my Anderson ancestors in Virginia. The earliest Anderson that I have is William 1734-1810, married Fanney___? William's son was Richard, 1761-1835. I wonder if Thomas Anderson, c. 1661-1693 to 1758, the child of Robert Anderson and Cecelia Massie, could be William's father? Richard's son Thomas, b. June 16, 1789 d 1857 married Chloe Glascock in Pittsylvania Co VA about 1815. Ring any bells? Is the lineage like this:

1 Richard Anderson b. 1585 London England

2 Richard Anderson Jr., 1619-1656

3 Robert Anderson 1640-1716

4 Thomas Anderson c, 1661-1758

5 William Anderson 1734-1810

6 Richard Anderson 1761-1835, m. Frances

Children Betsy, William, Thomas, Ann, and

John.

I think I just made a boo boo and you might not get my letter of thanks. John and PHoebe Searcy had children John Jr., Reuben, Bartlett, Richard, William, Timothy and daus. Elizabeth, Mary, Susannah, Sarah. Bartlett and wife carried family names in his line and Anderson was one of them. Lucy was a Williams and the Williams name is carried by their children. How old were the daus when they were bound outd? Phoebe Searcy must have been born 1694-1700. Thanks very much. Waunita

Hi Pat,

My Searcy ancestors who first immigrated to Hanover Co, VA in the early 18th century intermarried with the Anderson family but no one has ever been able to make the exact connection. Bartlett Searcy who was born in 1725 has been said to have married a Lucy Anderson but because there were Bartlett/Bartelott Andersons in Virgina at the time I suspect that his mother could have instead been an Anderson. Bartlett had brothers named Richard and Robert as well. His mother's name was Phoebe and we have uncovered a record of a Phebe Anderson who was bound to Anthony Winston in 1707 that would have been the right age. Some of us believe that Bartlett's wife was probably a Williams. Any suggestions would be appreciated by me and dozens of other Searcy reasearchers who have been working on this for 30 yrs!!

Thank you,

Dennis Kemper
