daughter of William Overton and Elizabeth Waters. She was born June 08, 1673 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1744 in
Hanover County, Virginia.
Notes for Robert
Anderson, Jr.:
Robert's birth date is derived from
Edward L. Anderson and William Pope Anderson publications. Robert was born in the delta of the Pamunkey
River at the head of the York River branch of the Chesapeake Bay.
1680 Robert Anderson headright of William
Wyatt to New Kent Co.
It was common practice at the time for
Virginia landholders to send their sons back to England to be educated. A return trip from England to Virginia
earned you a headright regardless of whether you had been born in Virginia.

Robert Anderson, Jr. was a 1703
Vestryman of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent, and Justice of New Kent in 1714.
From 1706 to 1716 Robert Anderson was a member of the vestry of St. Paul's
parish and signed as Robert Anderson, Jr. Robert Anderson's death in 1716 is
recorded in the St. Paul Parish vestry book.
The 727 acres became the "Goldmine" Plantation named after a
passing stream.
His sons were underage at the time of
his death and his family has been reconstructed from the deeds of his wife and
her sons and the precessioning records of St. Paul's parish.
Edward L. Anderson in his book
"Andersons of Goldmine" assigned many children to him that to me
appear to belong to his brothers.

Greetings
I just found you on
Rootsweb. We have LOTS in common. I am Bob Anderson,
descended from Charles
Anderson, son of Robert Anderson of Goldmine
Plantation, thence
Robert III, Robert II, Robert I, Charles II and Charles I (sic)
[so far]...who was
married to Elizabeth Hawkins in England.
I have lots of
family collected and am
looking for more. I would be delighted
to exchange
information with you if
you have any interest. My 3rd
G-grandfather Charles
was a brother to
Richard Clough Anderson, also another
brother who was
married to Elizabeth
Shelton whose sister Sarah was married to Patrick Henry
, etc. etc.
Pls. excuse this brief
note, wife just grabbed me by the ear and said we
were going out of town
"right now!!!"
I look forward to
further communications with you when I will not be
interrupted.

OK Pat, here 'tis.
I have been having
trouble with Adelphia Cablenet lately who've been
changing the file
extension on things I send out. .jpg's
don't arrive as
such when I send them
out, etc. So, if you have trouble with
this in any
way pls. let me
know. This is a big issue with me right
now, it's
handicapping me. I send a LOT of photos and other type file
extensions on
things that must arrive
in the form they were sent. I have a
bone to pick
with them.
I did something foolish
and erased (overwrote) my latest floppy copy and
even worse, before I
found out I overwrote my computer program with it too!
I had just added an
entire family line (Poindexter) from my great
grandmother that went
'impossibly' far back, around 1000! I
didn't go that
nearly that far with
it! .
I'm perturbed when anyone thinks they have
accomplished something
and gone back that far and they don't even have half
the names and use ???'s
to fill in! Well, at least I have a
hard copy
retype the reasonable
and documented part all over again.
I put this into MS WORD
which most people seem to want. It
opened here just
fine after I sent it to
myself in a test. If you'd rather have
it some
other way just let me
know. I can give it to you in a GEDCOM
format if
you'd like - or maybe
like me you'd rather have an Outline Descendent Tree?
That is the easiest for
me to follow and work with when trying to figure out
connections. I couldn't figure a way to chop this off
though at Charles -
son of Robert of
Goldmine, so you're getting more.
Good luck. I sure hope this is of some help to you.

Anderson:
Charles Anderson was born about 1713 in
New Kent County at the "Goldmine" plantation. HIs birth date is based on the fact that he
first appears in the St. Paul Parish Vestry book in 1734 and in that same year
his mother Mary Anderson deeds to him his portion of his father Robert's
estate.

Can anyone explain the
relationships among these parties to the chancery court case? Is it possible
that the mother of Wm. Anderson, Nathaniel Anderson and John Anderson was a
member of the Jones Family; and that Richard Banks, Charles Lambert, Hardin
Burnley and Geo. Brackenridge were married to sisters, who were daughters of
John and Elizabeth Jones?

HI!!! I am quite new to computer but saw your
posting on GenForum and I am hoping that you can help me or give me some
direction. I have ancestors who were in Hanover Co and later Louisa Co. VA. According to copies from an old family
Bible, my David BUNCH married a
Mary"Polly" O .When we were in VA. at some library I read a notation
that their 11th child, NATHANIEL's mother's father was Nathaniel ANDERSON. The
list of their children is more Anderson names than Bunch , and I wonder if you
have any information on the Nathaniel Anderson , born 1710. My line of descent
is through John A.(ANDERSON????) BUNCH
who married Hannah Crew. They were Quakers. Family tradition is that we
are descended from Pocahontas , but no
proof. A elderly relative use to quote the line of descent, but no one ever
wrote it down. Nadine

I have Bible record
for a Mary O "Overton?????) in BUNCH Bible that she was married to David Bunch 1745. First son is listed as
John A. The following generations have
the name "Anderson" and I
really think she is the daughter of Nathaniel Anderson born ca 1700 who was son
of Robert Anderson and Mary Overton, but I have no record to prove this. When
in a library in Virginia, I found a notation that SHE WAS a daughter of Nathaniel
Anderson but no proof or documentation.
Can you help me at all
or give me some direction??? They were

I am looking for
verification for the name of "Mary O" that married David BUNCH, 11
December 1745/46 He was born in Hanover County that later became Louisa Co. VA.
She was born 29 August 1729 Hanover Co. (Louisa Co) VA. I think her maiden name
was Anderson-- and the name carried down for years in our family. First son was
named John A.(anderson????) Bunch, 2nd son, Joseph married Mary Woodson
Anderson, 3rd son was named Pouncey, 4th William then there were sons David,
Anthony, Thomas and Nathaniel.
Found a notation in a
Virginia library that said her father's name was Nathaniel but there was not
any documentation.
Can anyone help
me?????

Hello:
I have found your
trees on Rootsweb to be very informative about the Anderson families of
Virginia. Your research shows a great
deal of wonderful work! I would like to
know if you have ever run up on any information on Capt. Matthew Anderson of Glouchester
County, VA. His wife was Mary Dabney
and he owned a large home on the Panmunkey River called "Exchange
Plantation". He had three
daughters who married into the Hudgins family of Matthews county.
Susan Anderson married
John Lewis Hudgins s/o Houlder Hudgins, Sr.(1st wife, 2 children)
Elizabeth Anderson
also married the same John Lewis Hudgins (2nd wife, 3 children)
and Mary Anderson who
married Houlder Hudgins, Sr., father of above (3rd wife , 2 children)
I have not seen much
information on this family, but believe you have seen him in the census of the
era.
Thanks for your time
and interest in this question.

PHILADELPHIA, February
27th, 1794.
DEAR SIR,
The resolutions
proposed by Mr. Madison, upon the principle of securing the advantages to the
navigation and commerce of the United States, which of right belong to her, and
which have been hitherto usurped by Britain, have been postponed to the first
Monday in March, by which time, the public will may be tolerably ascertained,
and foreign occurrences better known: A state like ours, whose prosperity
depends upon the
regular exportation of bulky commodities, to distant countries, must be deeply
interested to secure the national means of doing it, independent of foreign
revolutions and wars.
The idea of a naval force (heretofore
proposed) is yet progressing, attended with an additional tax ; it is
unfortunate that the benefits expected from the one, are by no means, so
certain as the burthen upon the community, which will inevitably flow from the
other, should it succeed. -- Demands have been made from a French island, for aids
of men, ammunition and provisions; but as these do not derive their origin
from France itself, it
is hardly probable that they will be persisted in, or productive of any degree
of embarrassment.
The subject of the slave-trade, has been
introduced by the Quakers, into Congress, and now stands upon the report of a
committee, favorable to the object of the petitioners ; this only extends to
prevent a practice of some people, who have lately been employed, in
transporting slaves from Africa to the West-India islands; and is not levelled
in the remotest degree, against the rights of private property.
The Senate doors are to opened at the
next session ; an event long desired, and from which the best predictions are
deduced in favor of republicanism.
It would be improper to conceal an
apprehension, to meet which, the public mind ought to be prepared. It is not a
secret, that prevarications have been resorted to by the British minister, to
avoid a negotiation for the fulfillment of the treaty, and that his court have
almost peremptorily refused to surrender the western posts upon any event. Time
only can develope the real motives of a conduct so unjust.
The late successes of France, against an
unexampled combination of despots, will, I hope, clear away the clouds which
had begun to darken our political horizon, and secure to us peace, the best
pledge for liberty, safety and happiness.
Should, however these precious objects of society be unjustly assailed,
contrary to my expectation, that the efforts in their defence may be
commensurate to their importance, is the fervent hope of
Dear Sir,
Your most
obedient-humble servant,
Anthony New

Notes for Charles
Anderson:
Governor Of Ohio
Memorial Record of
Western Kentucky, Lewis Publishing Company, 1904, pp 656-664 (portrait in
document) [Lyon] HON. CHARLES ANDERSON. The life history of few men of the
nation have touched along so many lines of usefulness as that of Governor
Charles Anderson, and yet there have been few men who have sought to figure in
as limited extent in the public eye as did he. His service was never promoted
by the hope of public reward or honors, but was the outpouring of a kindly
spirit, deeply interested in mankind and the highest development of the race.
Material improvement, intellectual and aesthetic culture and moral progress all
felt the stimulus of his efforts. His nation received his loyal support during
the darkest hours of its history, and there stands to-day [sic] in Kentucky one
of its most beautiful towns as a monument to its founder, Governor Charles
Anderson. Governor Anderson was born at Soldier's Retreat--his father's
homestead,--in Jefferson county, Kentucky, on the 1st of June, 1814. This
house, erected by his father, stood on land allotted to him by the state of
Virginia in recognition of his services as a colonel in the Continental army in
the war of the Revolution. The ancestral history of the family is traced back
to Robert Anderson, who was born in Scotland and was of pure Scotch descent. He
and his brother David came to America in 1665 and settled in the colony of
Virginia at New Kent Court House. His son was Robert Anderson, second, of St.
Peter's Parish, and his grandson was Robert, third, who purchased an estate
which was known as "Goldmines," and thus he came to be called
"Robin of Goldmines." He wedded Elizabeth Clough, a maiden of the
Virginia colony. Among their children was Richard Clough Anderson, the father
of the Governor. He was born at the family home, Goldmines, in Hanover county,
January 12, 1750 (O.S.), and was commissioned a captain of the Virginia militia
in his early manhood. He served with distinction in the Revolutionary war,
rising to the rank of colonel, and for his services was granted by the Virginia
house of burgesses a tract of land in Kentucky, where he afterward established
his home, calling his estate Soldier's Retreat, a home such as gained for the
state her reputation for hospitality. It was here that the noted Revolutionary
patriot passed away, October 16, 1826. As surveyor general of the state he
established offices in Louisville, and from the year 1783 or 1784 he made his
home continuously in this state. He was twice married, his first union being
with Miss Elizabeth Clark, a sister of General George Rogers Clark and General
Lewis Clark. Of this marriage four children were born. The eldest of these was
Richard Clough Anderson, Jr., who was elected to congress in 1817, at the same
time with Henry Clay. He was our first minister to the United States of
Colombia, and died en route from Bogota to Panama to attend the first
Pan-American-Panama Canal Congress in 1826. For his second wife Colonel
Anderson chose Miss Sarah Marshall, an own cousin of his first wife and of
Chief Justice Marshall. They became the parents of thirteen children, of whom
Governor Anderson was the youngest son that reached adult age. Governor
Anderson began his education under the direction of a private tutor, and by the
time he was six years of age had made considerable progress in Latin. He was
only twelve years of age at the time of his father's death. When a youth of
fifteen he became a student in the Miami University at Oxford, Ohio, where he
was graduated with the class of 1833, being then nineteen years of age.
Desiring to make the practice of law his life work, he was the first of a
thousand students who studied law in the office of Judge Pirtle, of Louisville.
He also read law in Cincinnati, and then entered upon the practice of his
profession in Dayton, Ohio, where he soon afterward entered into partnership
with Judge Joseph Crane. Later he removed to Cincinnati, where he formed a
partnership with Mr. Rufus King, and in both cities he enjoyed a large and
lucrative patronage. He was always a deep thinker, a profound reasoner and
logical in argument, and he won success in his chosen calling. His broad mind,
keen sensibilities and strong sympathy, however, caused him to give
considerable time and attention to the study of various questions relative to
the political, social and economic conditions of the country and to its
intellectual progress. He was known as one of the early political leaders of
Ohio and served in the state senate in 1843-4, leaving the impress of his
individuality and patriotic spirit upon the legislation enacted during that
period. There is no one man to whom Ohio owes more for the establishment of her
school system upon a firm and progressive basis. When opposition was sharp and
bitter, his efforts in its defense were never relaxed, and his energy and
eloquence in its behalf were potent efforts for good, producing results that
are still enjoyed by the entire school population of the state. This alone
would entitle him to distinction and the gratitude of his race, and yet he
performed many other works equally commendable and that render him one of the
benefactors of mankind. He it was who suggested the establishment of the first
home in America for the volunteers of the Civil war, that at Dayton, Ohio, and
as the result of his idea and his labors in this regard, there are now
scattered throughout the country these homes of the brave boys in blue who
stood as the defenders of the Union cause. Governor Anderson was a man of keen
insight, with marked recognition of possibilities, and he looked beyond the
exigencies of the moment to the possibilities of the future. He saw what
railroad-building would mean to the country, and while in the Ohio senate he
became the originator of the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad, and
after his removal to Kentucky, he was one of the three men most influential in
the building of the Elizabethtown & Paducah Railroad, now the Louisville
division of the Illinois Central Railroad. After residing in Cincinnati from
1845 until 1858, Governor Anderson removed to the south. He left Ohio because
of ill health, and ere [sic] he said goodby to his fellow citizens, his
brethren in the legal fraternity held a banquet in his honor. Going to San
Antonio, Texas, he secured a large body of land near that city and there
engaged in the breeding of horses and cattle, in which business he was engaged
at the time of the outbreak of the Civil war. He had watched with interest the
progress of events in the south, and never attempted to disguise his love of
country or his loyal devotion to the Union cause. In fact, when secession was
advocated and encouraged by the people of Texas, he valiantly defended the
Union cause and made a number of speeches in defense of his opinions that so
incensed southern sentiment that he was arrested and imprisoned. However, from
the camp in which he was imprisoned, by reason of some outside aid and the
inattention of his guards, he escaped, fled to Mexico, whence his family had
preceded him, and thence sailed to New York. Immediately afterward he went to
Dayton, Ohio, where he was tendered an appointment as colonel of the
Ninety-third Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. This he accepted, and with his
regiment, fully recruited, armed and equipped, left Dayton for Kentucky, August
20, 1862. He was in command of his regiment at Stone River, the first important
engagement in which he participated, and on the 21st of February, 1863, he was
wounded, his injuries unfitting him for further field service and thus forcing
him to resign. He was a man of unflinching courage in the face of danger, and
his known bravery inspired his men to deeds of valor. He won the love of his
soldiers, whom he never needlessly exposed to danger, but when duty called
never failed to lead them into the thickest of the fight. On leaving the army
Colonel Anderson rejoined his family in Dayton, and soon afterward, at the
solicitation of the Republican party, he accepted the nomination for lieutenant
governor of Ohio and was elected in 1863. Upon the death of Governor Brough he
succeeded to the office of governor, and filled out the unexpired term with
marked capability, safely guiding the ship of state through troubled waters.
After his retirement from office Governor Anderson returned to his native
state, becoming a resident of Eddyville in 1866. He purchased a large tract of
land near the town and superintended important and extensive agricultural
interests. About 1874 he laid out the town of Kuttawa, and in 1877 he took up
his abode there. While in college Governor Anderson had formed the acquaintance
of Miss Eliza J. Brown, and in 1835 they were married. They became the parents
of six children, of whom three survive, the only surviving son being Colonel
Latham Anderson. The daughters are Miss Kitty and Mrs. Belle Skinner, the
latter of Waynesville, North Carolina, and the former still living at the
family home in Kuttawa. The mother was born in Dayton, Ohio, October 20, 1816,
and died in Kuttawa, November 19, 1901. She was a daughter of Henry and
Catherine (Patterson) Brown. Her father was a native of Virginia and went to
Kentucky as private secretary to Governor Preston. In his political
affiliations Governor Anderson was first a Whig and afterward a Republican, and
in his religious connections he was a Presbyterian. His labors, however,
benefited people of all races, nationalities, creeds and beliefs. He was a man
of broadest sympathy and humanitarian principles, and his activity seems to
have touched upon almost every department of labor that has benefited mankind.
He always continued his efforts in behalf of education, and he became active in
prison reform associations. He was also a zealous factor in southern commercial
conventions, greatly desiring the business development and material upbuilding
[sic] of the south, which he loved so well. He was a man of intense artistic
temperament, evinced in the love of all forms of art, and, being a passionate
lover of nature, the practice of landscape gardening was his favorite pursuit.
This was manifest not only in the external decorations of his own home, and he
was also instrumental in the founding of park cemeteries and public parks. It
may be justly be claimed that he was the originator of the park-cemetery idea,
for which America bears the palm among all nations, for in 1845 he suggested
and outlined the plan for Woodland cemetery, near Dayton, Ohio. He has left a
monument to his genius in landscape architecture, of the naturally lovely
surroundings, and in the system of parks, including Cemetery Park, with which
he has munificently endowed the town. Living in the midst of ideally beautiful
surroundings, Governor Anderson spent the evening of a happy, useful and
honorable life, passing away on the 2nd of September, 1895, in the
eighty-second year of his age. "His life was gentle and the elements So
mixed in him that Nature might stand up And say to all the world, ‘This was a
man." Anderson Clough Clark Clay Marshall Pirtle Crane King Brough Brown Skinner

Dear Patrick,
Here's the line as promised.
Do you think any of the "cousins" may have more
info. I am interested in Elizabeth Anderson's birth dates, etc.
William Mynn Thorton who married Elizabeth Anderson is
probably the father of the University of Va professor of the same name, who
Thornton Hall there is named after and the grandfather of the John T. Thornton
who witnessed the great fire there (see Thornton discussion on Thornton surname
on rootsweb.)
John Gilliam who married Elizabeth M. Taylor is the Gilliam of
Robert E. Lee fame. Lee spent his last night on his way home from Appomattox in
a tent on the Gilliam's property and had breakfast with them. See quotes, following line.
Note also connections to the Overtons and the continuance of
the Dabney name through the line.

My Dear Fitzhugh,
. . . I have received a letter from your Uncle Carter telling
me of his pleasant visit to you and of his agreeable impression of his nephew
and new niece. He was taken very sick in Richmond and delayed there so long
that he could not be present at Wm. KennonÆs wedding, and missed the
festivities at his neighbor GilliamÆs and at Norwood. . .
Your affectionate father,
R. E. Lee
Captain Robert E. Lee, Recollections

. . . After Appomattox,
as he rode wearily homeward, he planned to stop overnight at the home of his
brother, Charles Carter Lee, in Powhatan, the house already was so crowded with
guests that Mrs. Gilliam, neighbor across the way, was asked if she could
receive General Lee. She made ready the best room happy in the prospect of
having him under her roof, but when he arrived she was told in his manner of
courteous finality that he could not think of troubling her and that he would
camp out, but that he would be grateful if she would entertain an officer who
happened to be traveling with his wife. Then he added, as he saw the ladyÆs
disappointment, that if it were agreeable to her he would be happy to take
breakfast with her the next morning. He bivouacked that night with the officers
who still keep this companyùit was probably the last time he ever did soùand he
appeared at the appointed hour at his hostessÆs. The anguish of defeat had
almost numbed him, and the burden of the maimed, the dead, and the widowed lay
on his heart, but even then while the corpse of his country still twitched, he
did not forget his love of youth. After the meal he took the little girl of the
family on his kneesùshe was about tenùand when he had caressed her, asked her
if she did not want to go with him to Richmond, where, he told her, he would
find a ôlot of little sweethearts for her.ö She still lives, with more than
seventy year behind her, and she cherishes that moment in the lap of General
Lee as the most precious in her life.

On his way to Richmond, which he reached on the 12th of April,
General Lee stopped for the night near the residence of his brother, Charles
Carter Lee, of Powhatan County, and although importuned by his brother to pass
the night under his roof, the General persisted in pitching his tent by the
side of the road (This was not immediately
in front of the residence of his brother, but of that of Mr. John Gilliam whose
farm adjoined that of Mr. Lee, a more elevated and desirable site) and going
into camp as usual. This continued self-denial may be only explained upon the
hypothesis that he desired to have his men know that he shared their privations
to he very last.
Southern
Historical Society Papers, Volume 15, p. xxvii.
At evening Lee reaches his brotherÆs farm in Powhatan County.
He was made welcome, of course, but as the house was crowded he insisted on
using his own tent. He was then invited to ôspend the nightö in familiar
Virginia phrase, at the residence of John Gilliam, whose farm adjoined that of
C. C. Lee. He asked, instead, that the available room be given a sick officer
and his wife who had driven up. Learning from his brotherÆs family that the
Gilliams were disappointed at his refusal and were very anxious that he at
least eat a meal at their table, he sent word that if it were agreeable he
would take breakfast with them. Then, having procured a pair of shoes for the
soldier to whom he had promise them, he went into camp, immediately in front of
the Gilliam home. It was his final bivouac, the last night he ever slept under
canvas.
The next morning he ate with the Gilliam family. It probably
was at this time, and in answer to a question from Mr. Gilliam that he said
many people would wonder why he did not make his escape before the surrender,
when that course was predictable. The reason, he explained, was that he was
unwilling to separate his fate for that of the men who had fought under him so
long. He was unrestrained in his conversation and made much of a little girl of
about ten, the daughter of the Gilliams, who was presented to him. He took her
on his knee and caressed her. ôPolly,ö he said, ôcome with me to Richmond and I
will give you a beau.ö
Douglas Southall
Freeman, R. E. Lee: A Biography, Volume 4, New York: Charles
Scribner and Sons, 1935, p. 160-161
At bedtime that night, Robert refused too crowd CarterÆs
family with three extra people (by now Giles Cooke had turned off to his home).
He also declined the invitation of neighbors,
Mr. and Mrs. Gilliam, asking them instead to take in a sick officer and
his wife who had stopped along the road and were preparing to camp out. So as
not to hurt the GilliamsÆ feelings, he agreed to have breakfast with them.
So the tent was pitched for the last time, and Lee went into
camp, to the disappointment of Walter Taylor, who wrote that thought he
appreciated LeeÆs desire to have his men know that he had shared their
privations to the last, he, personally, could have easily done without this
final bit of self-denial.
The presence of ten-year-old Polly Gilliam made breakfast
additionally pleasing for Robert, who took her on his knee afterward and talked
to her in that engaging way he had with children. When it came time to go, he
kissed her and whispered:
ôPolly, come with me to Richmond, and I will give you a beau.ö

The day of April 15 would see Lee into Richmond. Just six days
before, he had met with Grant to sign the surrender agreement. Three days ago,
his regiments had laid down their arms in the surrender ceremony. Now, stopping
for breakfast along the road at the house of a family named Gilliam, Lee showed
the lighter side of his nature. Always, he enjoyed the conversation of ladies
and of children; above all, he enjoyed his teasing encounters with little
girls. This day his entrance into Richmond as a paroled prisoner of war would
cause many to weep, but the man who symbolized this despair took ten-year-old
Polly Gilliam on his knee, smiled at her, and said, ôPolly, come with me to
Richmond and I will give you a beau.ö

Dear Pat
In your web page on
Colonial Virginia Anderson Families,
[snipped a discussion
of an error since corrected]
John Anderson married
his cousin, Mary6 Anderson (Robert5, Robert4, Robert3, Richard2, Richard1), and
died abt 1788. W. P. Anderson indicates
this later generation John Anderson may have been the son of John5 Anderson
(Robert4, Robert3, Richard2, Richard1) and Sarah Waddy. However, I believe he may have been the son
of Benjamin Anderson of Hanover Co. and Mary Dickerson. He named his oldest & only son,
Benjamin. The Benjamin who married Mary
Dickerson may have been the son of Bartelot Anderson & Mary Cosby, but if
he was, he married his 1st cousin through the Cosby Family. (Ref: The Early Dec. of Wm Overton &
Elizabeth Waters of VA. & Allied Families p19, see note (3)).
Both John Anderson's
lived in Hanover Co and appear to have had a brother named Nathaniel. The older Nathaniel died about 1744. The 2nd Nathaniel Anderson was a Continental
Line Officer during the Revolution. He
married Sarah Jones (my ancestor by her 2nd marriage), and died Dec 1797.
There were so many
John Anderson's in Hanover Co. VA during the 1700s that determining which was
which is very difficult. At least three
from Hanover served with the Continental Line of VA during the Revolution, and
I have been in contact with descendants of the other two.
I realize keeping you
home page up is quite a task. Please
let me know if you have questions, need clarification, or better documentation
on what I am saying in this MSG..
Sincerely,
Harry Anderson

Harry - Yes ... John5
is not the John that married Sarah
Waddy - we agree ...
We also agree on the below:
Robert4
Robert5 <--------sons-------->
John5
Mary6 ............married..........John6
"Jack"
And, yes,
"Jack" was the REV WAR soldier you mentioned. Sarah Travers Lewis
(Scott) Anderson has identified this John6 as the son of John5 and nephew of
Robert5 ... She did not state who the mother was .... Sarah does this in her
book, "LEWISES, MERIWETHER & THEIR KIN" which was published a
gazillion years ago .... Janice Caldwell in her book, "THE LOST BRANCH OF
THE ANDERSON FAMILY" published in 1995 ... agrees with Sarah .... After
John6 died, Mary6 md the Rev. Elkannah Talley and they had children ...
Benjamin7 (John6 and
Mary6) Anderson in 1809 received a warrant for 555 acres due him as the only
heir of John6 ...... Benjamin6 married Rebecca Curd and they had 6 children ...

In Reply to: Re:
Anderson of Hanover County, VA by Patrick Anderson of 11590
My connection to this
family is through Martha Talley, daughter of Elkanah and Mary Anderson Talley.
Apparently Elkanah and Mary Anderson Talley were deceased by 1805, when Thomas
Starke became guardian of Martha(Patty) and Wm. Talley, two of the children.
Starke continued as the guardian of Martha, until 1813; and guardian of Wm.
Talley, until 1816. On 24 March 1812, the following notice appeared in the
Richmond Enquirer and the Virginia Patriot: "Married at the res. of Maj.
Thomas Starke, on Thurs. last (March 19) MR. THOMAS SATTERWHITE, of King
William Co., to MISS MARTHA T. TALLEY of Hanover."
Thomas Satterwhite was
the son (by a late second marriage) of Mann Satterwhite and Susannah
(Williamson?) Crenshaw of King William County (see "The Papers of Edward
Pleasants Valentine" for a discussion of the Satterwhite Family). Thomas
and Martha Talley Satterwhite lived across the Pamunkey River in King William
County on a 650 acre tract which had originally belonged to the Dabney Family.
They had an only son, Eldred W. Satterwhite (born about 1815), who was my
gggrandfather. After the death of Thomas Satterwhite in 1820, Martha Talley
Satterwhite married John W. Valentine and continued to live on the Pamunkey
River tract until Eldred Satterwhite became of age (about 1836). She and John
Valentine may have moved West after that date.
I note that you did not
show a son, William, in your list of children for Elkanah Talley and Mary
Anderson. I believe there may have also been a son, Elkanah, who married a
member of the DeJarnette Family. Where did your list come from?
27. William8 Anderson (John7, Robert6,
Robert5, Robert4, Richard3, "York
Watershed"2, "Colonial Virginia"1) was
born April 05, 1744 in Hanover County, Virginia, and died July 22, 1792. He married Cecelia Anderson (Source:
William Pope Anderson, Anderson Family Records, (W. F. Schaeffer & Co., Cincinnati,
Ohio; 1936).), daughter of Robert Anderson and Elizabeth Clough. She was born August 02, 1748 in Hanover
County, Virginia, and died September 30, 1802.
Children are listed
above under (18) Cecelia Anderson.
28. Nathaniel8 Anderson (John7, Robert6,
Robert5, Robert4, Richard3, "York
Watershed"2, "Colonial Virginia"1) was
born Abt. 1750 in Hanover County, Virginia, and died December 20, 1798 in
Caroline County, Virginia. He married Sarah
Jones. She was born Abt. 1770, and
died August 28, 1840.
Notes for Nathaniel
Anderson:
Harry F. Anderson
A Nathaniel Anderson
born maybe about 1750 was an officer in the Revolution. He married Sarah Jones,
and died Dec 1997 in Hanover or Caroline Co VA. I am about 85% certain he was a
brother of John Anderson who died 1787 and married Mary Anderson. An Hanover
Co., VA deed refers to him as Nathaniel Anderson Jr. probable to distingluish
him from Nathaniel Anderson (born 1742?) the son of David Anderson.

Pat,

This looks like my ancestor, William Anderson (1773-1836).
of Hanover & Caroline Co.,VA, but he married Sarah Jones not Sarah
Taylor. These have to be three of her
six children, but Catherine Terrell. was from a prevous marriage to Nathaniel
Anderson (died Dec 1797). Hebert
Anderson (born 1800) was the third child of her three children by her marriage
to William Anderson.
William Anderson and
Sarah Jones' child, Armstead (born abt 1802), was also known as William A.
Anderson, and he was my g-g-grandfather.
If this is one of the Armstead's you were talking about then I have
plenty of information on him. The other
Armstead (son of Garland) was his uncle who I thought was the one in Richmond,
VA in 1802.
I believe Sarah Taylor was the 2nd wife of
another Nathaniel Anderson who died in 1812.

Children of Nathaniel

119 i. Sally Jones9 Anderson, born July

1793. He married Mary Willis January
12, 1818 in Richmond , Virginia.
121 iii. Katherine Terrell Anderson, born Abt.

Hello Patrick, I posted a response to the George Anderson
query. After I had I realized that you
had all that data below the message. I
descend from Geo.
Anderson Jr. His daughter
Elizabeth(Betsy) Gardener Anderson m. Minor Winn...my Ancestors. Thomas Winn who m. into the family of the
previous generation was his uncle. What
you list as the pedigree up the Woodson/Naper is what I came up with over a
decade ago. I even made a couple of trips to Palmyra and researched the records
myself. Minor Winn's dau. Susan m.
Richard McCary. They were my ggg
grandparents. An interesting fact is
that Catherine Banks m. a second time and through that marriage became the
ancestor of Thomas Jefferson, so we have one ancestor in common with him. I'm speaking from memory, so I might not be
quoting it correctly, but there is proof.
I did that research over a decade ago.

Just found your web
page on Anderson. I descend from Pouncey and Elizabeth Holland (d/o Michael
Holland) Anderson. I have printed out the 20 page Anderson's and will go over
it good. Sure would like to have a download of this to put on my computer if
that is possible?
Believe I can add a
little to what you have. It is so extensive and really good.
Another interest I
have in this Anderson line is: The early Ambrose Joshua Smith that lived in
Hanover/Louisa Co's VA was closely associated with the Pouncey Anderson family.
I have never found a connection but think it possible that he married an
Anderson?? Her maiden name was Judith.
Descendant of
Pouncey's (Elizabeth Dabney m. Christopher Columbus Johnson and moved to
Spartanburg District, SC)
I will be happy to
download you what I have on the Anderson family.

The best information on
your family is in the three books by W. P. Anderson. Your line is correct for
the 1st three generations.. If you have
questions about the last three generations you give or more information on the
1st three, I will have to look it up in these books. I have a copy of two of
his books, and there is a copy of the part of the first book, ANDERSON RECORDS,
that I do not have, in the local Macon GA. library.
A big question I now
have is: Was the first Robert Anderson who married Cecila Massie born in
Virginia or England?? Most researchers assume he is a descendant of one of the
early Richard Anderson's who settled in Virginia about 1635, but I am not sure.
I have seen a statement
in a book that he married Cecila Massie in London, England, but I do not
remember the name of the book. There is a statement in a Family Treemaker File
that he married Cecila Massie abt 1686 in England (6142787 Fiche 36). These statements can not be accepted without
proof from a primary record.
I would like to find a
marriage record in England, but I have not had any experence searching for
records in England.
My ancestor is Garland
Anderson (1742-1811) who probably was the son of Barteot Anderson and Mary
Cosby. Most researchers give this Bartelot as the son of Robert Anderson and
Mary Overton, but I have never seen proof . There is certainly a connection
with the Robert Anderson family.
My new email address is

Pat,
Forgive me for not
sending the information I have on William O. Anderson. I have had family here
and thought we would have time to send the file but there was so much going on
and not enough time. My genealogy is on Ultimate Family Tree and I tried
sending a small file in RTF to a niece to see if it worked and was not
successful. Will either try that again or maybe I can send it through a Gedcom
file. In any case I have not forgotten and will try again when I have more
time. There is so much I need to learn and am amazed with all you sent and so
well documented. I have been gathering data for years but did not realize the
importance of documenting sources in the early years.
I wrote to Eleanor
Poindexter regarding George N. Yates m. Mary Elizabeth Anderson. They were my
great grandparents and for 20 years I have tried to find something on him, all
to no avail. I asked her source as thought it might give me a clue but have not
had a response. Is she a professional genealogist?

Hi Patrick, I am
writing in the hopes that either you or one of your many contributors can help
me sort out a tangled web of Anderson marrying Anderson. I am trying to attach Benjamin Shackleford
Anderson and Sarah Elinor Anderson to their colonial roots.
Benjamin S. Anderson
was born August 22 1818 in Goldmine, Fluvanna Co. VA. and died march 09, 1884
in Elk Creek, Colusa Co. CA. He is
believed to be the son of William H. Anderson and Rosemond Kidd. After the death of his first wife, William
Anderson remarried a widow (name unknown) who had two boys. The children's names were David and
George. William Anderson died in Casey
Co. KY. July 22 1848.

Hi, Pat
You may not have seen my reply to you in
the Virginia Gen Forum. If not, thanks again. You may be confused by this but I
am enclosing a message which I found in my mother's memorabilia regarding the
Andersons of Virginia. I copied the letter just as it was written so you will
find errors in the writing and probably much erroneous information. However, I
did want to see what you thought of the context and may have more info for me.
Where could I find a copy of the book written by William Pope Anderson?
I do wish I had found this sooner. It
was the incentive for me to go into this family history and I could have
checked a few things out with my mother and even with my great grandmother a
few years back.
Thank you for taking
the time to read this and any further assistance will be appreciated.

Mr. Marshall Shelpman,
South Bend, Indiana
Dear Sir;
Through the kindness of your
grand niece, Mrs. Mary Wirries, of Butler, Ind. I have found out that you are
probably a grandson of Robert Anderson, who was son of Robert Anderson, a
soldier, and some sort of officer during the American Revolution. If so, I hope
you are in good health and able to give me some very much desired information
concerning the Andersons. I am really hopeful of being able to write a family
history of the Andersons. If you are a great grandson of Robert Anderson, of
the Revolution, you will probably know that he had the following children; I
don't know the order: Walter (Wat), Samuel, Pinkney, John, Richard, and Robert.
Also Margaret, married to Mr. Carlton; Jane, married Cadwallader Jones (my
grandmother) and Nancy who was accidentally killed in Gibson Co., Ind., by her
brother Robert, who was helping to arrest a desperado who had taken shelter in
the home of Samuel Anderson. Nancy was at her brother's for the day.
The first I knew for sure of
great grandfather's family, Robert of the Revolution, was that he and family
arrived in Gibson county, Indiana, about 1805-6. They had lived in Kentucky for
some time before coming to Indiana.
Robert, Sr. was born in Va. But seems to have done most of his soldiering
in South Carolina. He was captured at Charleston, and after that, being denied
an exchange, fought King George all over South Carolina, against the law of
nations, being wounded at the battle of Kings Mountain.
He lived in Indiana from about
1805 to 1816. He then removed to Edwards County, Ill., where he died between
1826 and 1836. In 1836, his widow, age 85, and I think all the sons and
daughters, then living, removed to western Arkansas, stopping for a few months
in Barry County, Mo. My father, John Jones, son of Cadwallader Jones, who had
married Jan Anderson, then a young man of 19 accompanied the Andersons and
Carltons to the Boston Mountains in Arkansas. He then went on west with a
hunting party led by Kit Carson, and was gone for three years, coming back to
Ill. another way. He died about 1890,
and never during his lifetime was able to again hear from his uncles,
aunts and cousins. Three years ago I received the information through
the Garretts of Gibson County, Ind. That Samuel Anderson removed to Fannin
County, Texas, from Ark., about 1847, and that upon his arrival there he and
all his family took down with typhoid fever, he and every one of the family
died. I have never heard from any of the others, though I think none of the
brothers went with Samuel to Texas.
If you know what became of the
others, who they married, and any other information, kindly give me all I know.
Some few years ago I ran across
the genealogy of Richard Clough Anderson, born in Hanover County, Va., and who
was a colonel in the War of the Revolution. I noticed he had a brother, born
1740-1named Robert, the eldest of the family. This Richard Clough had a son,
Maj. Robert Anderson, who commanded at Fort Sumter at the opening of the Civil
War. As I had heard my father say that he and Maj. Robert were second cousins,
I began working on the theory that our Revolutionary Robert and Colonel Richard
Clough Anderson were brothers. Every figment I have learned since has led to that
conclusion. And your grand niece has given me, I hop, the final proof. In
speaking of her kinsmen, through the Anderson family she mentions a number of
Dabneys. Now in the Richard Clough Anderson genealogy it is mentioned that his
brother Robert married, 1st a Shelton, 2nd a Dabney. Now if the Dabneys in your
family were named for the family of our great grandmother Anderson, then I will
know, or be reasonably assured that we have the same line that Richard Clough
came through.
If you have the information,
tell me who you understand Robert of the Revolution married for a second wife,
who I think was mother to most of his children.
NOTE: This is the end
of the letter sent to my great uncle from a W. R. Jones from Yellville,
Arkansas, on a letterhead which said Lands & Investments dated 7/31. My
great grandfather was Robert Dabney Shelpman, and my grandmother (his daughter) was named Anna Mayo Shelpman. Both the names Dabney and Mayo run through
our family names.
I believe Nathaniel
Anderson and Frances Woodson had a son named Robert b. 7/17/1784 who had a
daughter named Margaret Mayo Anderson by his second wife, Rebecca Pettus. This Margaret Mayo married an Abel Shelpman. There I have hit a brick wall and I may not
be following the right trail. I am very new at this and the only people I know
who could enlighten me are long since gone.
Children of Robert
Anderson and Rebecca Pettus are:
195 i. Margaret Mayo11 Anderson, born
Bet. 1810 - 1825. She married Abel
Shelpman.

Thank you so much for
the file. That was the track I was following and now I am sure it is the right
one. I know that Nathaniel and Mary Mayo had a son named Robert who had a
daughter named Margaret Mayo Anderson who married an Abel Shelpman. I have no
dates for Abel but, since she was born in 1827, I am thinking they may have had
a son whom they named Robert Dabney.
Margaret did have a
brother named Robert Dabney Anderson. The dates all seem to fit. Am I taking
too much for granted?

Dear Pat, I intended to
send you this when I first found it. I know for sure now that Abel Shelpman is
my great great grandfather because I have always known that Robert Dabney had
at least 2 brothers, Marshall and Edward, and a sister whose name I had never
heard.
I also do not recall
hearing of George.Of course Abel's wife's name is misspelled but the age is
right. Everything else fits right in. Thanks again for your help and

ANDERSON (CAPT. GEO. P. ANDERSON'S DAUGHTER) MARRIAGE TO JOHN SHAY. MY FIANCE'
ALLAN GROSS'S GGGRANDFATHER IS GEO. P. ANDERSON & ROBERT & NATHANIEL.
THE OTHER DAY I HAPPENED ON TO ANOTHER GEORGE ANDERSON THAT HAD LISTED
NATHANIEL AS HIS SON.
I WAS ELATED....SPENT
MANY, MANY HOURS GOING ALL THE WAY BACK THRU THE FRANCES WOODSON'S FAMILY LINE,
NAPIER, PERRIN, TUCKER ETC. ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE 1540! I WAS BESIDE
MYSELF....FOR JUST A SHORT WHILE THO.
I THEN GOT ONTO
WORLDCONNECT.ROOTSWEB WHERE I FOUND YOUR INFO., AT THIS POINT I COULD SEE THAT
I HAD WAISTED MANY, MANY HOURS AS YOU HAD ALREADY DONE SO MUCH OF WHAT I
WAS REPEATING! ONLY ONE TINSY WINCY PROBLEM.
I CAME ON TO THE
INFORMATION ON "NATHANIEL" & MARY ANDERSON. I SCREECHED TO A
HALT. READ THE NOTE ABOUT THERE WERE TWO COUPLES. ONE WAS NATHAN & MARIANNA
MAYO & COUSIN NATHANIEL & MARY MAYO! ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT WHAT RECORDS
I'VE FOUND SHOW ONLY "NATHANIEL & MARIANNA" AS A COUPLE ON
ANCESTRY.COM-INDIVIDUAL DATABASE. I DIDN'T SEE ANY NATHAN & MIRIANNA AT
ALL.
SO NOW I, AM TOTALLY
CONFUSED, AS THE LINE I HAVE PROBABLY ISN'T THE "NATHAN" LINE, BUT
I'M NOT SURE????!!! I AM LISTING WHAT LINE THAT I HAVE UP TO NATHANIEL.
ALLAN GROSS'S MOTHER JANE'S SIDE IS (BURNS-SHAY-ANDERSON),
& MARVON SHAY IS ALLAN'S GRANDFATHER, & JOHN W. SHAY
IS ALLAN'S GGRANDFATHER WHO MARRIED EMMA JANE ANDERSON WHO IS HIS GGRANDMOTHER,
THEN ON TO THE ANDERSON SIDE, WHERE CAPT. GEORGE P. ANDERSON IS EMMA'S DAD
& HIS DAD IS "ROBERT ANDERSON" & FINALLY I GET TO
"NATHANIEL" WHO SUPPODESLY MARRIED "MARRIANNA MAYO"!!
I AM READY TO TOSS
EVERYTHING & GIVE UP! I HAVE MARIANNA'S PARENTS AS EITHER JOHN & MARY
(TABB) MAYO OR JAMES MAYO SR. & MARTHA WILLIAMS OR BETH UNDERWOOD, THEN
VALENTINE MAYO & ANN A. MECKELBURROUGH. I HAVEN'T HAD THE TIME TO GET INTO
THE EXACT DATES ON THE MAYO SIDE TO SEE WHO IS FATHER & GRANDFATHER YET.
BUT NOW, I DON'T EVERN KNOW IF I'M ON THE RIGHT FAMILY!!!!
CAN YOU HELP ME OUT
SOME??? I WAS PLANNING TO HAVE A LITTLE BOOKLET FOR EACH OF THE ANDERSON FAMILY
MEMBERS AT THE THANKSGIVING DINNER TABLE, BUT THIS NOW SEEMS LIKE IT WON'T
HAPPEN. TWO OF THE ANDERSON CLAN, ARE ALSO INTERESTED IN GENEALOGY & I'M
NOW WORRIED THAT WE'VE ALL BEEN CHACING THE WRONG PEOPLE!
WOULD APPRECIATE ANY
CLARIFICATION YOU CAN GIVE ME, AS I'M ANXIOUSLY AWAITING YOUR REPLY.
