Descendants of Matthew Anderson

Generation No. 1

        1. Matthew6 Anderson (Robert5, Richard4, Richard3, York Watershed2, Colonial Virginia1) (Source: (1) William Pope Anderson, Anderson Family Records, (W. F. Schaeffer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio; 1936)., (2) William Pope Anderson, Anderson - Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants of William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Fa, (Cincinnati, Ohio; 1945.)., (3) C. G. Chamberlayne, The Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, Virginia 1706-1786, (Clearfield Company, Inc.; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, Maryland 1999).) was born Abt. 1685 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died 1719 in Hanover County, Virginia. He married Cecilia Massie (Source: C. G. Chamberlayne, The Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, Virginia 1706-1786, (Clearfield Company, Inc.; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, Maryland 1999).) Abt. 1707. She was born Aft. 1680, and died Abt. 1743 in Louisa County, Virginia.

Notes for Matthew Anderson:

The birth date of Matthew has been corrected to reflect the fact that he does not appear in the 1704 rent roll and may differ from the one given by William Pope Anderson in Anderson - Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants of William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Families, by William Pope Anderson, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1945. Matthew's existence is derived from a study of early precessioning records of St. Paul's Parish which associate him with Robert Anderson I.

He clearly married a Cecilia whose surname is unproven but appears to have been Massie. This is determined from the precessioning records. Follow-up researchers should be cautious that the occurence of Cecilia's name in the early parish records may have caused early researchers to both create a Cecilia as a sister and to give his father Robert a wife by the name of Cecilia. Alternatively there may be some relation between Matthew's wife Cecilia and his father's wife, neither of whom's surname is firmly established. However from records that I have seen it is only clear that this one widow named Cecilia existed.

In 1708/09 Matthew acquired the lands of Capt. William Anderson. This suggests that Matthew was born before 1687. Capt. William is believed to be a younger brother of the family and likely left Virginia in 1708/09. Matthew is last listed in Hanover land records in 1715/16 after which his widow Cecilia is listed in 1719 as land owner until 1743. Matthew therefore died between 1715 and 1719. More likely close to 1719 as in 1719 Gilbert Gibson was given a patent adjacent to Matthew and Thomas Anderson in New Kent County.

Matthew appears to have died young and likely only had a few children. There was a tendency to claim all the Andersons in the Hanover tax lists as belonging to Robert Anderson, Jr., a tradition started by Edward L. Anderson early in the 20th century.

Matthew died before his sons were of age and as a result we have no official record of their names. I have seen no will for him.

In 1735 James Anderson precesions for Cecelia's land and is therefore likely a son born before 1714. Edward L. Anderson listed this James as a son of Matthew's brother Robert. Because of Matthew's early date of death it seems more likely James was a son under age at his father's death. I have seen someone's penciled note in the Va. Sate Library implying that Bartelot Anderson was the son of Matthew. It is known by record that Bartelot had a brother Charles from land patents and and from a surviving 1747 letter.

The Bartelot/Matthew Association comes from

Goochland County Wills & Deeds 1736-1742, page 415

12/04/1740 Valentine Bostick of Hanover Co to John Woodson of Goochland Co

WIt: Nowel Burton, Matthew Anderson, Bartelot Anderson

If Bartelot was a son of Matthew then it is sure that Matthew also had a son Charles. Matthew the elder had died by 1719 and the Matthew of the above record would have to be a Matthew, Jr. In 1755 Bartelot acts as the executor for Matthew Anderson, Jr.

Notes for Cecilia Massie:

The widow Cicilia Anderson is prominent in the precessioning records of St. Paul's parish.

N New Found River, adj. William Rice.

N New Found River, adj. William Rice, granted to Cecelia Anderson, widow 11/13/1721 on condition of seating

1727 adj. Charles Chiswell

Cicilia's association with the Massie family suggests that she was the Cecilia Massie of tradition in the Anderson family. Unfortunately previous researchers have variously claimed her to be a daughter of Robert, 1st, 2nd and/or his wife. I have only been able to find evidence that his one Cecilia, widow, was a member of the family.

Children of Matthew Anderson and Cecilia Massie are:

+ 2 i. Matthew7 Anderson, born Abt. 1708 in New Kent County, Virginia; died Bef. 1752 in Hanover County, Virginia.

+ 3 ii. Bartelot Anderson, born Abt. 1710 in New Kent County, Virginia; died 1761 in Hanover County, Virginia.

+ 4 iii. Colonel Charles Anderson, born Abt. 1713 in New Kent County, Virginia; died Aft. 1760 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.

5 iv. James Anderson (Source: William Pope Anderson, Anderson - Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants of William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Fa, (Cincinnati, Ohio; 1945.).), born Abt. 1714 in New Kent County, Virginia; died Bet. 1763 - 1764.

Notes for James Anderson:

There is supposition that James Anderson of early Hanover was a son of Matthew Anderson because he supercedes his parents in the Hanover precessioning records of St. Paul's Parish. James Anderson is mentioned as replacing Cecelia Anderson in 1735 and Thomas Anderson in 1741 as a precessioner of lands in St. Pauls's parish vestry book.

By 1764 James has sold his father's land to Ralph Crutchfield. He either dies or merges into the sea of James Andersons of Virginia. If you are looking for him I might check out the New RIver area where his mother got the patent in 1721 since it was probably intended for her sons.

The 1747 family bible of John Goodwin Jr, lists these deaths:

Frances Dobson d 15 Nov 1768

John Anderson d 2 Dec 1760.

I think that the John Goodwin with wife Mary mentioned above is the same as John Goodwin, Jr, who owned the bible.

John Goodwin Jr. had at least two daughters:

Frances Goodwin b cir 1748 m John Meaux or Meux of New Kent Co., Va. & Mary Goodwin who probably married a Horsley.

AH! but they must not have had that newspaper article & the 1747 bible

This is my THEORY

Matthew Anderson had a wife Frances who m 2nd Rich Dobson

She is the Frances Dobson who died 15 Nov 1768

Anderson Children:

Mathew Anderson - adult in 1755 (born before 1734)

Mary Anderson b 1730 or earlier m John Goodwin -married before 1747

Frances Goodwin born before 1748 m 23 Feb 1764 (bible in her family)

        Mary Goodwin

John & Lucy Anderson - born after 1735 ("infants in 1855)

John Goodwin died 28 Oct 1762

Either Mary ( the widow Goodwin) or Mary (the daughter Goodwin) m __ Horsley & is

the Mary Horsley who d 10 May 1773.

Also a John Anderson died 2 Dec 1760.

Children of Matthew Anderson and Frances ? are:

+ 6 i. Mary8 Anderson, born Bet. 1725 - 1730.

7 ii. John Anderson, born Bet. 1734 - 1740 in King William County, Virginia; died December 02, 1760 in Hanover County, Virginia.

        3. Bartelot7 Anderson (Matthew6, Robert5, Richard4, Richard3, York Watershed2, Colonial Virginia1) (Source: William Pope Anderson, Anderson - Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants of William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Fa, (Cincinnati, Ohio; 1945.).) was born Abt. 1710 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died 1761 in Hanover County, Virginia. He married Mary Cosby Abt. 1740. She was born Abt. 1715 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died in Hanover County, Virginia.

Notes for Bartelot Anderson:

1734 Mary Dowell appts as her attorney Bartlet Anderson to acknowledge to Samuel Dalton her dower right to 400a sold by husband John Dowell. St. Paul Parish Vestry book

Edward L. Anderson early in the 20th century placed Bartelot Anderson as the son of Robert Anderson, Jr. In the 1980's I had seen someone's penciled note in the Va. Sate Library implying that Bartelot was the son of Matthew (Robert's brother). It is known by record that Bartelot had a brother Charles from land patents and records in Prince Edward County and from a surviving 1747 letter. If this is the case then Charles Anderson the brother of Robert Anderson, III and Charles Anderson the brother of Bartelot need to be one and the same person. However an examination of Robert's brother Charles who lived on 335 acres near Totopotomys Creek in Hanover County and Charles Anderson who patented lands in Prince Edward County with Bartelot indicate that they are unlikely to be the same individual. Therefore I have concluded in 2003 that Bartelot is likely the son of Matthew Anderson as claimed by the unknown scribler.

My research shows that the Bartelot/Matthew Association comes from:

Goochland County Wills & Deeds 1736-1742, page 415

12/04/1740 Valentine Bostick of Hanover Co to John Woodson of Goochland Co

for 40 pounds 400a in St. James Parish, on north side of Appomattox River, granted by patent to John Bostick, dec'd 8 Sept. 1736 and by said said John sold to Valentine Bostick; bounded by William Bostick late of Goochland Co., John Cahfin, Edmund Hodges, Willaim Arnold; with all houses. WIt: Nowel Burton, Matthew Anderson, Bartelot Anderson

The earlier generation Matthew was dead before 1719. Matthew of this record was likely his son as he appears in the same precinct in St. Paul's Parish as his mother Cecilia. Bartelot witnesses the 1733 deeds from Mary Anderson nee Overton to her son John Anderson and Charles Anderson. Because he appears on many documents of the cousins I cannot yet confirm that Bartelot is a son of Matthew, but as he acts as the executor for Matthew Anderson, Jr. it seems likely. Bartelot Anderson was an early Virginia Lawyer. See his many advertisements regarding the settlement of estates in the "Virginia Gazette and General Advertiser" (the Williamsburg colonial newspaper).

I also found your namesake - Patrick Anderson, colonial lawyer of

Hanover Co., Va. not only with a law license but a law certificate to

practice before the Supreme Court.

Think he is a grandson of Bartlotte Anderson "the old Lawyer of

Hanover".

The next generation of Hanover Co was NOT the Barttelot Anderson who

married Frances Dickenson & died in Louisa Co., Va. (different man &

another Barttelot). The Bartelot Anderson II of Hanover was a

Commonwealth Attorney & Magistrate of Hanover Co., Va. died in Hanover

Hi Pat,

Several weeks ago we were discussing the children of Bartlett Anderson and Mary Cosby and you questioned where I got information regarding their having a daughter named Frances (who married John Smith). I think I have found the source - 'though it came to me second hand. It was in the book by W. P. Anderson published in 1938 - perhaps you are familiar with it. "Early Descendants of William Overton and Elizabeth Waters and Allied Families". Are you familiar with it?

Let me know what you think.

Wish I could find the connection between my husband's Bartlett Anderson and my Pouncey.

        4. Colonel Charles7 Anderson (Matthew6, Robert5, Richard4, Richard3, York Watershed2, Colonial Virginia1) (Source: William Pope Anderson, Anderson Family Records, (W. F. Schaeffer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio; 1936).) was born Abt. 1713 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1760 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth ? Bef. 1757. She was born Abt. 1715, and died in Prince Edward County, Virginia.

Notes for Colonel Charles Anderson:

Both Charles Anderson and his brother Bartelot Anderson patent lands adjacent each other in the area now Prince Edward County. It is likely that this Charles Anderson is the one who served in the House of Burgesses from Prince Edward County, Virginia and was prominent in the founding of the County. Charles Anderson patented lands in western Amelia County, Virignia now Prince Edward County in 1747 and 1751. Likely he used the land as a speculator selling it off for profit and also granted some of it to sons of his. He apparently retained his land in Hanover County while moving to Prince Edward and may have had additional children than those listed. He survived until after 1779 and his will may yet be found.

Hello - I just found your response to a reques I posted to GenForum

I just purchased a book "Genealogical Abstracts from 18th Century Virginia Newspapers" by Robert K. Headley, Jr (GPC) - and the notice as below was listed:

This notice appeared in 14 Feb 1755 later issues thru 27 Jun 1755 in the Virginia Gazette: Matthew Anderson (probably of Hanover) dec'd,

the case of Rich. Dobson & Frances his wife against William Taylor, Gent. -General court

Mentions: Matthew Anderson, John Goodwin & Mary his wife, John & Lucy Anderson infants, John Scott, Bartlett Anderson & John Anderson exors of Matthew Anderson. (this book has dozens of colonial Anderson records)

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW ALL THOSE FOLKS IN THE ABOVE REFERENCE RELATETO EACH OTHER OR ANY OTHER RECORDS???

For years and years I have been trying to "unlock" the ancestry of thefamily as found in the 1747 family bible of John Goodwin Jr, lists these deaths:

Frances Dobson d 15 Nov 1768

John Anderson d 2 Dec 1760

Mary Horsley d 10 May 1773 ( I don't know who she is)

John Goodwin d 22 Mar 1759

John Goodwin d 28 Oct 1762

Then the bible passed to Frances Goodwin (daughter of John Jr)bc 1748 m John Meaux or Meux

The John Goodwin who died 22 Mar 1759 - he died in York Co., Va. testate (have a photocopy of his will) owned extensive property in York, King William Hanover. He was twice married (first wife UNKNOWN) by this first wife had a son John Jr who had two daughters Frances Mary mentioned in his 1759 will. I hadn't the foggiest notion of who was the wife of John Jr - I am still not sure the last John Goodwin who died 28 Oct 1762 is JohnJr or perhaps an unknown son. So WHEN I saw the above notice I think I have hit paydirt- notice a Frances Dobson, a John Goodwin wife Mary with Andersons all in one record.

I have no idea from that notice just how these folks fit together.

My ancestors Frances Goodwin & John Meaux - these lines already interlock all over the place with Dabney (I am a descendant of Sarah Dabney md William Winston - she is a sister of Dorothy who m William Anderson -[NOTE: the original land grant was made to Dorothy Dabney & when it was recorded she was "now the wife of William Anderson" - so we know within a year when Dorothy Dabney m William Anderson] Frances Goodwin & John Meaux had a daughter Anne Meaux who m Richard Littlepage, son of Col. James Littlepage & Sarah Winston - this is my line and how I connect back to William Winston & Sarah Dabney...all lived in Hanover.

Many of us who are researching the DABNEY family feel and know thereare many errors in this family. More than a 100 years ago agreat scam or flim-flam - claiming a great fortune was theirs and folks all over VA. "altered or simply made up" Dabney records (including court records) to prove they were members of the family so they could claim this vast (fake) fortune.

(The DAR appears in some of their records to have confused the war record of another Nathaniel Anderson who died in 1812 with this Nathaniels war record .) This record contains part of a William and Nathaniel Anderson Family Bible and a large amount of information on their families. An abstract of the pension record in Andersons Family Records, page 7-8, by W.P. Anderson report Nathaniel Anderson as having died Feb 1798. This is a copying error ; it should read before Feb. 1798.

Virginia Migrations ,Hanover Country, Vol. II , copyrighted in 1949, by Glazebrook and Glazebrook pages vi-vii and 1-5. Nancy is the only child in source three for which a birth date can not be found in source one Therefore it is assumed that Lucy and Nancy are the same person, and one of these names is a copying error. The other children not listed in source three are

believed to have died before 1817 without issue.

To: Ollie Clarke:

Ollie,

Sorry to be so long in getting this information to you. It was not that I was not interested. I have had problems with my computer system and several other detractions.

According to Glazebrook’s, "VA Migrations, Hanover Co. Vol II p vi " , Anderson’s Bridge used by the British to cross over into Hanover Co., VA during the Revolution was owned by Garland Anderson. He was a merchant in Hanover Co., VA who was originally a partner of Charles Smith. This Garland Anderson (1742-1811) according to W. P. Anderson , "Descendants of Wm Overton and Elizabeth Waters of VA". owned land on both sides of the river in Hanover and Caroline Co. VA, and he lived in the upper end of Hanover, Co. when he died.

Garland Anderson took Patrick Henry’s place as a member of the Virginia Congress when Patrick Henry became governor. Later Bartlott Anderson (Jr.) was also elected a member of the Virginia Congress from Hanover Co.. I have been trying to find proof these two were brothers.

A complete list with dates of birth of the children of Garland Anderson is given in DAR 466388 submitted by a descendant of Genet Anderson. Glazebook and W.P. Anderson also give lists, but my g-g-g grandfather, William Anderson (1773-1836) is omitted from W. P. Anderson’s list. However, Glazebook does give William Anderson and John Burbridge Anderson as the two sons who were administrators of Garland Anderson’s estate. The date of birth of this William is the same as the William Anderson who married Sarah Jones (Anderson) widow of Nathaniel Anderson, an officer in the Continental Line during the Revolution. William Anderson lived in Carolina Co. possibly near what is now the Meadows Horse Farm.

Garland Anderson also own a grist mill which I assume was in the same location as the bridge. This was probable the same mill that was mentioned in his youngest son’s, Genet , will. . Genet Anderson died in Hanover Co., VA in 1834. (The will of Genet Anderson is one of the few wills of the early Hanover Co., Anderson’s which has not been lost). A Mr. Tate who was 76 years old and lived 2 miles south of Beaverdam VA in 1981 told me that Anderson’s Mill had burned down. I assumed he could remember when it did. The location he gave appeared to match the location of the mill owned by Garland Anderson and later Genet Anderson.

I have found directions, dated about 1906, on how to get to an Old Anderson’s Cemetery. This is the cemetery where John Burbidge Anderson (b1765, oldest son of Garland) and members of his family are buried. At least the members who did not move to Kentucky. The location given is 2 1/2 miles from Beaverdam, VA and the directions say that you turn off the main road to the left just past the mill.. I believe this was at the river on the county line between Beaverdam and Childresburg. The cemetery, I would think is on the Caroline Co., side of the river since John Burbridge Anderson lived in Caroline Co.. There is now a bridge across the river which I believe may be near the location of Anderson’s Bridge, Mill, and Cemetery. The paved roads to the present bridge are more than 2 1/2 miles, but a county map shows a road no longer passable about 2 1/2 miles long.

I live about 700 miles away from the area. In my two visit to the area, I got there too late in the day to really look around. The first time I was almost bitten by a dog, and the second time I was stopped by a no trespassing sign. Some day, I hope someone who lives near the area can take a look around. I would be very interested in what they find.

If you need any more information, please contact me.I will be glad to send it to you.if I have it. Hope to hear from you

Harry F. Anderson

Your website is truly concise and informative. Greetings,

I am a descendant of Henry Tompkins Anderson, 1812-1872.I have one of the publications of "The Anderson Bible", as translated from the Greek by H.T. Anderson.I am attempting to trace forward and backward and have come to 2 impasses.

The first impass is finding the European Anderson branch. I know the female Overton/Waters connection, but where is the actual male Anderson that married into the female line and where does the male originate? English? Swedish?

The second impasse. Tracing the children of Henry Tompkins Anderson. I have written inside the bible inscription," Presented to my niece Bell Ellsworth Anderson Gride May 6th 1932. Translated by your Grandfather in 1864. Love Aunt Pickett Anderson Timmins. Dec 10th 1949 the bible was inscribed and presented to me on my first birthday by Great Aunt Bell.

I know that my grandmother was born in Dodge City Kansas and that the family resided at one time in Ellsworth. But for the life of me I cannot remember my grandmothers maiden name, only her birthdate. Jan 6 1890. Can you shed any light on these areas? It appears we are related in some fashion. Nice to know as I am an only child and so was my mother.

Oh I do know that Great Great Aunt Pickett Anderson Timmins was a Daughter of the American Revolution..Here is the information on this.

DAR-Volume 162, page 58

DAR ID Number:161185

Born Midway Ky

Wife of Harry A. Timmons

Another note.....Record shows spelling as Timmons...The Bible signature shows Timmins...I also have 2 pictures of Aunt Pickett where she was in Japan in 1924. Also have photograph of H.T. Anderson at a roll top desk. Could this have been taken by son Clarence. Photo has been sealed inside front hard cover in bible under what appears to be clear tape, so I cannot see the back.It is also interesting to note that Henry T was sitting on several books to increase height.

Warmest Regards

Pat,

[snip]

This looks like my ancestor, William Anderson (1773-1836). of Hanover & Caroline Co.,VA, but he married Sarah Jones not Sarah Taylor. These have to be three of her six children, but Catherine Terrell. was from a prevous marriage to Nathaniel Anderson (died Dec 1797). Hebert Anderson (born 1800) was the third child of her three children by her marriage to William Anderson.

William Anderson and Sarah Jones' child, Armstead (born abt 1802), was also known as William A. Anderson, and he was my g-g-grandfather. If this is one of the Armstead's you were talking about then I have plenty of information on him. The other Armstead (son of Garland) was his uncle who I thought was the one in Richmond, VA in 1802.

I believe Sarah Taylor was the 2nd wife of another Nathaniel Anderson who died in 1812.
