1. David3 Anderson ("Northern Neck"2, "Colonial

born Bef. 1634, and died Bef. 1679 in Stafford County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth ?.
Notes for David
Anderson:
David Anderson was an early resident of
the base of the northern neck of Virginia.
The county name changes make it appear that he moved up the Potomac but
I would have to carefully trace his land to determine if he moved at all. In the 1750's there is a David Anderson in
Westmoreland County which is his grandson.

David Anderson 400 pounds of tobacco by 10 October next in consideration of
patent which Richard Cole did engage to patent survey and right of 140 acres to
David Anderson. Westmoreland County,

of George], Gent.,…Unto my son John Washington that plantation whereon I now
live which I bought of David Anderson [Andrewson in recorded copy] that
plantation next to Mr. John Foxhall that I bought and the seat of land of about
400 acres… Westmoreland County, Virginia Deeds, Patents, Etc., 1665-1677, pages
365a-366.
Note 1: Records clearly tie Andersons of
Westmoreland to those in Stafford County.
Note 2: Concerning the April 1675 record--clearly
ties the Andersons of Stafford/Fairfax Counties to a branch of Andersons who
went to Camden Co., SC. That John
Anderson's two oldest sons were named Bailey and Scarlett Anderson. There other records showing association with
a man whose last name was Brent. This
Anderson family had ties to Carneys (Kearneys) and Cliftons.
Note 3: There is evidence to suggest that there was
a David Anderson with son David and a grandson David.

of his office of undersheriff accordingly.
Stafford County, Virginia Order Book 1692-1693, page 350.
Note: Sheriff Scarlett and Under-Sheriff George
Anderson together. This could suggest
that the John Anderson, with eldest sons of Bailey and Scarlett, was related to
George Anderson.

Pat,
You asked about John
and Sarah:
According to his
great-great grandson, Boon Anderson, John Anderson was born in Scotland and
brought to this country as a boy. He
married Sarah Carney in 1752 in Overwarton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia.
He and Sarah moved
their family from Stafford County to Greenville County, South Carolina before
the war with England. John served his
country from here in Benjamin Roebuck’s Company. He was killed in the Battle of Augusta in 1781.
About 1795 virtually
all of Sarah’s children left South Carolina and moved to Warren County,
Kentucky. She went with them. Over the next
thirty years these
children and their children scattered and settled in western Kentucky, Alabama,
Indiana, Mississippi and Texas where most of them still have descendants. Sarah died in Kentucky in 1811.

REV. JAMES ANDERSON
NOT THE FATHER OF
JOHN ANDERSON WHO
MARRIED SARAH CARNEY
Probably twenty years ago, the assertion
was made that the Rev. James Anderson was the father of our John Anderson. As soon as it came to my attention, I
started trying to track down the reason why this statement was made. I didn't really doubt it, I just wondered
how the connection was made. What I
learned was that it all seemed to hinge on the fact that someone had given
January 13, 1724 as our John's birthdate.
Of course, that was when the Rev. James' son, John, was born.
My next step was to find out why this
birthdate was assigned to our John. I
finally tracked it back to an elderly lady in Kentucky who, when I wrote to
her, didn't have a clue where she had gotten the date or why she thought it was
our John's.
Then, I assembled all the references I
could find which had been offered as proof and tracked them back as far as I
could and came up with the following sources:
Bible Record of
Rev. James Anderson - states only that
he had a son, John, born January 13, 1724-5 in New York
Pennsylvania
Genealogies by Wm. Egle - only quotes
the above Bible record
Immigrants to America
Before 1750 by Virkus - quotes the above Bible records and adds that John
"died young"
DAR Application of
Mrs. Dena Henslee Singleton, Nat'l #526822 - I received a copy of this
application which DAR had corrected to show that her ancestor John Anderson who
married Sarah Carney was born January 13, 1724 in New York. I wrote the Lineage Research Committee of
NSDAR in Washington, D. C, regarding this entry, explaining the controversy
over John's birthdate, etc. On August
15, 1979, they sent a letter stating - "The birthdate written in on
National No. 526822 Is completely incorrect.
That is the birthdate for John Anderson, son of Rev. James Anderson, but this man is not your
Revolutionary ancestor. This man was
married to Ann Irvin, From your records we know that your ancestor John
Anderson was married to Sarah Carney. ...A date of circa 1730 has been given to
your Revolutionary ancestor since we have no specific date for his birth."
The following,
although it does not constitute proof,
must be considered as much of the information came from this John
Anderson's own granddaughter:
Maxwell History and
Genealogy by Florence Wilson Houston - 1916
"The descendants of our John
Anderson say he was the son of the Rev, James Anderson
of Donegal, Penn, and so far we have found nothing to disprove this, while there is much that makes it conclusive,
though it has been claimed by some historians
that he was the son of John or James Anderson of Augusta Countyp Virginia."
"In
the will of James Anderson he mentions by name only his wife, a niece, his daughter, Susanna, and the youngest son,
Thomas, who was still a child and yet to be
educated.... After mentioning these he
directs that his remaining property be 'divided
among all my children'."
"John,
the seventh child of Rev. James
Anderson, was born January 13, 1724. It
is recorded that he was born in
New York, while his mother was visiting at the home
of a relative, His early years were
spent in Pennsylvania, but when still a youth
he went to Virginia and the greater part of his active years were spent there."
"By
various records-especially the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography and the Chalkley Records, his path is made
clear, For the more minute and intimate
details, as to his family, we have the long line of descendants given from the personal knowledge of his
granddaughter Martha (Anderson) Baugh, near the middle of the last century...." (here follows a brief
history of the Old Stone Church of
Augusta Co., Va.)
"Reverting
to John Anderson: He married, about 1750, Anna Irvine (Erwin). The following
list of their descendants is from Court Records and from data given more than fifty years ago, by their granddaughter
Martha (Anderson) Baugh, a daughter of
their son, William.".... (There
is no question but that this is a completely different
line from ours.)
What it all come down to is that (unless
there is some documentation that I don't know about) is there is NO proof that
our John Anderson who married Sarah Carney is the son of the Rev. James
Anderson and very substantial proof that the Rev. James' son, John, married Ann
Irvine (Erwin).
If you have anything that would
contradict this, I would be very interested in hearing about it.

A Joshua Carney was in
Stafford Co. in 1760, and continued to appear there on tax lists until at least
1789. The 1773 list shows him with 40 acres. Apparently living with him was a
Benjamin Carney whose taxes were charged to Joshua, so perhaps Benjamin was his
son. We do not know whether or how Joshua and Benjamin were related to the John
Carney who md Mary, though that appears quite likely. Joshua filed a claim for
having performed public service during the Rev. War.
A Joshua Carney
received a land grant Dec. 26, 1803, in Stafford Co.: Description: 11 1/2 acres
on both sides of the north run of Chappawamsick adjoining land of Sudden, and
Green. Benjamin received land grants about the same time, including two grants
in 1805 in nearby Prince William Co. (Also, Carney, Joshua Public Service
Claim, Rev. War)
There are no Carney's
in the Stafford County, Virginia will indexes for 1729-1767.
Apparently the John
and Mary Carney family united with the Chopawamsic Baptist Church:
The following
declaration, copied from the records at the Virginia State Library, was the
genesis for the
Chopawamsic Baptist
Church:
"Here, in the
Colony of Virginia firmly desiring to be constituted and established into a
distinct church of the
same denomination,
faith and order and being at our request freely dismissed for that purpose from
the church in
Fauquier aforesaid.
And appears by a letter signed by several members of that congregation ----
date August
9th, 1766. Hoping it
may be to the glory of God and our edification, these subscribers in the
presence of God
solemnly unite as a
religious body to worship him, to celebrate his ordinances, to manifest his
truth and to
promote his honor in
the world....."
The declaration
concluded:
"That all
disputes may as far as possible be avoided and peace, concord and unity
maintained by the blessing of
God for which we pray
and in testimony of our union herein we have all set our hand this day of our
constitution
being the 22nd day of
November 1766." Among the many registrants were:
Mary Anderson, John
Carney, Mary Carney, Absalam Carney, Sary Carney, and Joshisa (sic) Carney.
(Fauquier
County,Virginia was formed 1 May 1759 from Prince William County, Virginia.)
Apparently the general
area where the Carneys were - John, Thomas, Joshua, Benjamin, Absalom, Sarah,
... was in what is now the Quantico Marine Base reservation. I think it likely
that the Absalom and Joshua on the above petition were NOT children of John and
Mary, because of their ages, and the lack of other children's names on the
list.
Children of John
Anderson and Sarah Carney are:
+ 7 i. Bailey7 Anderson, born November
13, 1753 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co., Virginia; died August 01, 1840 in
Harrison Co., Texas.
