Hi Patrick!
I've just been
visiting your wonderful web site on Colonial VA Anderson's. I have an Anderson
line in the Colonial VA area and am hoping that they may tie in somehow. My Anderson line (one of them - I have at
least 2):
Thomas ANDERSON d
19/12/1734 Kent County, DE m. UNKNOWN.
Known children:
(2)James, John,
Bartholomew.
(2)James ANDERSON c
1690 Kent Co DE bef 13 May 1762 m Elizabeth BROWN c 1720 in Kent Co, DE. Elizabeth was born c 1695 in Kent Co, DE and
died 8 March 1774 in Kent Co. DE. Known
children: Rebecca m Richard MCNATT, William, James m Ann CLIFTON, Ezekiel, Elijah,
Major, Elizabeth m Nathaniel KILLINGSWORTH, Mary, and Ann.
My line goes through
Rebecca and Richard McNatt. James and
Ann Clifton were active in the founding of the Nicholite religious sect that
merged with the Quakers after the Revolutionary War.
Please let me know if
any of this rings any bells with you. I
have really hit a brick wall with this one.
Thanks!

I have been in touch
with Don Royston, he may be in touch with you. I asked for confirmation of
association to the Anderson information I have gathered through you and others.
I also asked if he knew how to locate the Anderson family cemetery (Bartholomew
Anderson).
This is Don's response
below November 21, 2000.
The Anderson family
cemetery is on the old Anderson tract of land originally granted from Lord
Fairfax to Bartholomew Anderson. You will
need a map of Clarke
County. First find Berryville; go east on VA Rt. 7 about 2 miles to Rt.608
(Webbtown); turn left (north) and follow 608 approximately 1 1/2 miles to a
depression in the road (a creek called Morgan's Spring Run). Stop. To your east
(toward the mountains) across two fields (as I recall) and through two gates
and turn north (left) up the small incline you will find an enclosed graveyard.
This is the Anderson Family Cemetery. Actually, you'll find some Ware and Hart
family members there, too. I've been to this cemetery but it was about five
years ago before I started this hobby called genealogy. I need to revisit it.
The last descendant of the last Anderson who owned the
property died in 1986
and his grave is in Green Hill Cem. (that I know about). His name was Walter B.
Anderson.

Dear Pat,
Thanks for the speedy
reply as I recognize that you probably get hundreds of e-mails as you seem to
be really spread out into genealogy research. I appreciate your taking the time
to provide me with genealogy data.
I noticed that you made
no mention of Daniel in your reply. On
the first information that you gave me on Genforum.Genealogy.com you gave me a
list of children for Bartholomew Anderson that included Daniel Anderson on the end
but nothing about him? Is he not listed
on the Will and if not how did you know about him in the information you gave
me the first time? Would greatly
appreciate finding out before I look into this further.

Mr. Anderson,
While looking thru the
Roots Web offering and discovered your wonderful Anderson site and I commend
you on you dedication and hard work.
Your site is quite informative.
I hope you will forgive
me for asking that you research a bit further into Jane Johnson's spouse's name
as I fear you have come to an incorrect conclusion. Your Jane was the spouse of James Vardaman [as he chose to spell
his surname] rather than his brother, William [who spelt his surname as Vardeman]. Both brother's married women with the given
name of Jane.
For conformation of the
above, please contact J. H. Vardaman,

descends from your Jane Johnson, daughter of Ann Anderson and Daniel Johnson.

Patrick,
I love web surfing--so
many puzzles arise! On Mike Chapman's website,
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mchapman/James%20Chapman.html, I find
the following (highlights mine):
James Chapman's oldest
son was Joseph Chapman, who was killed by his negroes in 1807 in Adair County,
Kentucky.(10) Although we do not now know the year Joseph Chapman was born, we
know that his father, James Chapman, likely married before 1751. Due to the
fact that his daughter, Nancy Chapman Dawson, was a native of Virginia, we can
surmise that Joseph married in Virginia before he moved to Adair County,
Kentucky. Based on land sale records, it appears that Joseph Chapman was
married to Catherine Anderson, daughter of Bartholomew Anderson and his wife,
Pheby. In 1754 Catherine inherited a 216-acre Fairfax grant from her
father.(11) Joseph and Catherine Chapman subsequently sold this land to David
Castleman on 6 April 1772 for 216 pounds.(12)
11. O'Dell, Cecil,
Pioneers of Old Frederick County, Virginia 222 (Walsworth Publishing Co., 1995)
cites to Frederick County, Virginia Will Book 2, p. 139 for this information
12. Id., citing
several land sales of Anderson property in Frederick County, Virginia Deed Book
15, pp. 59, 188, 306; Book 16, pp. 38, 210, 267. The actual cite to the Joseph
Chapman sale is probably to Book 15, p. 306, but this should be checked.
----------------
So I went in search of
Bartholomew Anderson w/wife Pheby--and found him on your web site without a
daughter Catherine. I wonder if you have seen the sources Mike cited for his
Chapman-Anderson connection and might help me figure out the contradictions
here.
Joseph Chapman and
wife Catherine (whoever she may be) migrated to Adair Co. KY after 1784. On
Aug. 11-12, 1784, two military grants for Chapman, totalling 4000 acres, were
recorded in Adair Co. KY. He was killed there by several of his Negroes in
1809. In the 1810 census, oldest son Peyton was head of household of five, with one woman, probably Catherine, over age
45, so born before 1765.
It had always been my
suspicion that Catherine (or perhaps her mother) was a PEYTON since the name
continues in both Chapman and Dohoney (Rhodes Dohoney married three of Joseph
Chapman's daughters), but I have not done research in VA on this family
yet--thought I would check available info before diving in--and discovered the
above contradictions. Any suggestions?
Many thanks,
Karen Dale

Patrick,
I'd love to
"talk" more with you regarding the Anderson family. My G-G-
grandmother was Ann Anderson, daughter of Joseph Edward Anderson, who married
Peter Royston in 1801. A few cousins and I have done some work (actually, we
think it's quite a lot but nothing like I see on your web site. A wonderful
job!). I've tried contacting a Sarah Anderson Boyle who lived (lives) in the DC
area but she has changed her address since I last heard from her.
Ann Anderson had a
first cousin, Washington Anderson, who married Peter and Ann Anderson Royston's
daughter, Anna Maria Royston. Do you have any info on them?
eager to hear from you.
