Maguire More Maguires Up To Today

Other noteworthy Maguires are; Nicholas Maguire(1460-1512) the Bishop of
Leighlin , Cathal MacManus
Maguire(1439-1498) Irish historian, one of the main authors
of the "Annals of Ulster", (a
history of Ulster), helped by Rory Lunny and
O'Cassidy who labored to it's completion in
1504, past Cathals death, where the name of Maguire appears no less than
391 times & according to the publication "Clan Maguire of
Fermanagh", p.1, "This most famous tome "Annals of Ulster" was used by
O'Clery and O'Luinnin The restorers of the "Leabhar Gabhala" in
1631 in the compiling of the "Annals of the Four Masters" a basic source
for reviewing Irish civilization & history, and Patrick
Maguire the first man in Columbus' crew to step
onto American soil. In the archives of Madrid it is recorded by
Father Tornitori, an Italian priest in the 17th century who
witnessed the landing of Columbus. Father Tornitori states that, "on the
eventful morning of the landing, boats bearing Columbus and some of his
crew were launched; but approaching the land the water shallowed
and Patrick Maguire
jumped out of the boat to lighten the load and then waded
ashore", making his landing before Columbus.

The Republic of Ireland through government &
Northern Ireland through charity have decided to cooperate in
welcoming back the true descendants of the Gaelic
Order by officially installing Chiefs over clans, this
process usually takes up to ten years. Then the Chief Herald of Ireland
approves or disapproves the candidate according to how well the claim of
decent is proved. The gathering of the clans "the
wild geese" of Ireland is refereed to as the "Home Coming".
You might be interested to know that Terrence
Maguire originally from South
Africa & now out of Dublin has successfully
matriculated to the honorary historical position of Chief of
Maguire and on Saturday, the 19th of September 1992 at Lisnaskea on the ancient inauguration rath of the
Maguires, Princes of Fermanagh, in the presence of clansmen and
clanswomen from all over the world, for the first time in over four
centuries Terence Maguire was formally installed as The Maguire
of Fermanagh - Chief of his Name by the then Chief Herald of Ireland,
Donal Begley, Esq.. Way to go Terrence! So I guess this means we
have a [16th] Officially Inaugurated
Chief. This seems to have become a trend in
response to the (1982) Coronation of Jorge
O'Neill, Peer of Portugal, The O'Neill of
Clannabuidhe, to the honorary historical position of King of
Ireland and succeeding him in (1991) his son Hugo O'Neill. Many Irish families are
reclaiming & celebrating their families history in this way.
Terrance was also instrumental in forming The Standing Council of Irish Chiefs and
Chieftains. The main objectives of the Council's Constitution
are to protect, foster and progress Irish culture as it effects the
Irish Chiefs and Chieftains and the Clans they represent, thus
preserving the Gaelic heritage of Ireland. This Council includes along
with the Irish, the Scots and the English. Perhaps the council should be called the
Standing Council of Gaelic Chiefs and Chieftains.
Terrance is now in the process of restoring a part of Maguire
& Irish Gaelic history in the form of Five
Medieval Maguire Chalices. Although he was unable to have
them all returned, he has been able to have some of them recreated for
the sake of Irish Gaelic Culture. He does request help in the way of
funds for their recreation. If you wish to help he requests that you
please send your donation to:
THE MAGUIRE OF FERMANAGH 'FERMANAGH' 12 ARDILEA DOWNS,
MOUNT ANVILLE ROAD MOUNT MERRION, DUBLIN 14 All cheques to be made
payable to "Maguire Chalices"

As with any family chronicle I have
only highlighted the most prominent features in the names history.
Maguires' still contribute
throughout the world and as in any human family I'm sure there are some
that don't. I hope this gives others of the shared name reason for some
healthy self respect.
