DeHart HISTORY

A GENEALOGICAL STUDY OF THE DEHART FAMILY

SIMON DEHART THROUGH STEPHEN H. DEHART

BY: THOMAS DAY DEHART

James DeHart

James DeHart was Aaron DeHart's Oldest son. I can only estimate his date of birth at between 1760-1770. I figure closer to 1770 because of Aaron's first land purchase being in 1770. In the U.S. Census for Patrick Co., Va. (1820) James DeHart was between 50 and 60 years old. This is how I approximated his birth date. I know very little about James DeHart's early years. Not until he moved to Patrick Co. did I find out any significant information about his life. Tax records provide the only record of his migration from Amherst Co. to Patrick Co. James paid taxes in Amherst Co. through 1797. From 1798 on James was listed as having paid taxes in Patrick Co. James DeHart married Catherine Hubbard in January of 1797 in Patrick Co. Va. This was probably one of the major reasons for settling in Patrick Co. His marriage was witnessed by his brother, Elijah DeHart and his brother-in-law, Thomas Tennison. James had four children that I know of. His oldest child was Lucynda, born in 1797. She married John Wood on 2 Oct. 1821. She died in 1855. Thomas was one of his three sons. All I know about him is that he married Margaret Boyd. James' other two sons were James Wilson DeHart who married Rebecca Martin and the last son, Elijah DeHart.
