DeHart HISTORY

A GENEALOGICAL STUDY OF THE DEHART FAMILY

SIMON DEHART THROUGH STEPHEN H. DEHART

BY: THOMAS DAY DEHART

Elijah DeHart

Elijah DeHart was Aaron DeHart's son. From what I have found, Elijah was the most well to do of the Patrick Co DeHarts. He was born between 1770 and 1780 in Amherst Co Va. (50-60 years old in U.S. Census for Patrick Co. - 1830). He was the first of the DeHarts to move into the wilderness of newly formed Patrick Co. As explained earlier his mother, Ellender, went with him and also his brother and sister (Gabriel and Susanna). Because of his father's death he took his family to start a new life in Patrick Co. Elijah married Mary Jordon in January of 1797 in Patrick Co. His wedding may have been a joint ceremony with his brother James. They were both married in Jan of 1797 in Patrick Co. Each one was listed as a witness for the other's wedding. (Patrick Co Marriage Register, 1797.) Elijah had a very large family of seven sons and five daughters. There names were as follows: Aaron, Thomas, John S., Elijah J., Charles, Jesse P., Zaphamiaha?, Polly, Susanna, Nancey, Rebecca, and Malinda. (Names taken from Elijah's Last Will and Testement - Patrick Co. Courthouse Records, Stuart, Va.) Throughout his life I could not find any record of Elijah buying any land. However, He sold land on several occations I asked myself where he could have gotten the land from in the first place. There was only one possible explanation and that is that he must have acquired a large amount of land in the form of a land grant or patent. However, I never found a record of such. He sold a tract of land to his brother, Gabriel (My Great-Great-Great Grandfather) in 1798. (Deed Book 1, pg. 559- Patrick Co. Court Records); Gabriel would have been 18 years of age at this time so this was probably his first homestead tract. Elijah accumulated a sizable estate in his lifetime as shown in the property settlement accompanying his will. (Patrick Co. probate records) Elijah died in 1846. His will was probated in December of 1846. In it he divided his estate equally among his wife and children. Evidently his wife, Mary, died several years earlier. One of his many slaves was sold for $2500.00, a sizable sum in those days.
