A Preliminary Study of the Origin and History of the DeHart Family

MARY DeHART TRUITT

Mary DeHart Truittt was born about 1811 in Burke county, N, C.. She was the daughter of Nathan and Catherine Ramsey DeHart. The family moved to Wayne County, Ky., where she was reared and married Solomon Truitt. They soon settled in what is now Swain count, N. C. and reared five children, one son, James, died young and had no family.

Sarah Truitt, daughter of Solomon Truitt, married Birch McHan. She was born about 1830. To this union were born nine sons and two daughters. Their names were James, Solomon, William, Martin, John, Noah, Allison, Mary, Ellen, Dallas and Wilkie, all now dead except Allison and Wilkie.

James McHan, a public school teacher, married Henrietta Owen and to them were born eight daughters and two sons. Each of his children lived to be grown and were all public school teachers. Solomon McHan, a teacher, moved to Oklahoma, and most of his family are dead.

William McHan married Jane Ann Dean and reared a large industrious family.

Martin McHan, a school teacher, merchant and farmer moved to Georgia and was very successful in all lines of endeavor.

John McHan, a schol teacher and farmer, reared a large family.

Noah McHan moved out west and reared a fine family of boys but verylittleis known of them.

Allison McHan, a successful merchant and farmer, married Sis DeHartand reared one son and two daughters.

Dallas McHan married and reared three children, a son and two daughters, one daughter, a school teacher.

Wilkie McHan, a farmer and merchant, married Nellie White and reared eight children. Three of them are teachers.

Mary McHan married John Edwards and reared two sons and one daughter.

Ellen McHan married William Tabor and to them were born eight children. Some of them still living.

Mary Catherine Truitt, a daughter of Solomon Truitt, was born Oct.24, 1840, and married Adolphus Welch, a school teacher; to them were born two sons, James, died in early manhood; the other John T. Welch, still lives and is a successful school teacher and farmer.

Ellen Truitt married William Forrester. Seven children were born to them. They are all dead but a son, Jud, still lives.

John Truitt, a son of Solomon Truitt, was born about 1836 and died May 4, 1926. He married Margaret Davis. They reared two daughters named Sarah and Mary. Mary married William Parish and reared five children, three being school teachers. Sarah married Martin Walls and reared a family of eight.
