Clinton David Higby

Clinton was born 10/13/1860 on a farm near Townville, Crawford Co. PA. At the age of 10 to 14 he started helping his father in his business of buying and selling dairy products. His father died in 1897 of injuries incurred in the civil war. In 1879 he began to teach at Clappville, west of Tryonville in Crawford Co. The money he earned allowed him to go to Allegheny College where he studied history and political science. He was awarded a Phd, cum laude in 1894. He also studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1889. Apparently served as Superintendent of Schools in Tipton, IN for a year in 1894 and, then, returned to Erie, PA. Later he also invested money for clients. "He asked a client who had gradually transferred all his business to his office why he came to do it, and the answer was, "As soon as you collect my money you send it to me". Clinton was a member of the American Historical Association, and was made a life member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society in 1915. His interest in history led to his compiling this genealogy. Clinton died in 1938.

Notes from Tom: In some ways Clinton is an unknown. We have his book and can see him come through in his words, but it would be fascinating to talk to someone who actually knew him. I realize this is unlikely given that he died in 1938. It also is not known if Clinton has any close relatives living. I would like to know more about how he created his book; was it hand set? We don't even know how may copies were printed.

Breaking news Jan. 2006. I have been in contact with a granddaughter and great grandson of Clinton. They were excited about the site and are providing addtional information!
