THE KILGORE FAMILY
IN GEORGIA
In 1755, William Killgore, Sr., petitioned for and received 200 acres of land at the mouth of Fishing Creek, about 60 miles north of Augusta, Georgia. Where he came from, we don't know. We believe he may have come from North Carolina. Another Killgore, Ralph, arrived about the same time. We believe he and William may have been brothers. William and his wife, Sarah, eventually had seven children: Elizabeth, Hannah, Robert, John, William, Jr., Sarah, and Mary Ann. William Killgore, Sr. fought in the Revolutionary War under Colonel Elijah Clark, and died in 1790 in Greene County, Georgia.
William's son, William Killgore, Jr., was born about 1759, and married Anne Higginbotham in 1791, in Greene County. In 1809, he married Celia M. Roney, in Putnam County, Georgia, and died there in 1812. His children were Robert, Joseph, William, Samuel, Thursey, and Simeon.
William's son, Robert Greer Killgore, was born about 1794. His first wife was Mary "Polly" Maroney. He served in the Georgia Militia in the War of 1812, and migrated to Haralson County, Georgia. He married Elizabeth Tally there in 1849. Robert Greer Killgore died in Haralson County in 1879, and is buried there in the "family burying ground." He fathered 21 children by his two wives.
Robert's oldest son, William K. Kilgore, was born about 1815 in Jasper County, Georgia. He married Margaret Barnett in 1840, moved to Cleburne County, Alabama, and had 10 children. William K. Kilgore died before his father's will was written in 1870. When and where he died are questions we are still trying to answer.
William's son, Robert Lafayette Kilgore, was born in 1847, and married Josephine Nunnally in 1870. He died in 1909, in Cleburne County, Alabama. The children of Robert and Josephine Kilgore were Robert, Margaret, James, Perry, Elisha, Mary, and Dotson.
Robert's son, Dotson Bennett Kilgore, was born in Cleburne County, in 1881. He married Sarah Irene Dryden in 1900, and they moved to Turner County, Georgia. Their children were Gordon, James, George, Rosa Lee, William, Maybelle, and Mary. Sarah died in 1918, and Dotson Kilgore moved his family to Irwin County, Georgia, where he married Mattie Gladdin in 1921. He died in 1963 in Irwin County.
Dotson's son, William Lafayette Kilgore, was born in Cleburne County, Alabama, in 1902. He married Erma Cavenaugh in Irwin County, Georgia, in 1924, and their children were William, James, Betty Latrelle (my mother), and Lamar. William Kilgore died in Irwin County in 1969.

KILLGORE FAMILY REUNION
Beginning in 1999, we have been holding an annual reunion in Tallapoosa, Georgia. The reunion is held at the Helton-Howland Park, located about 2 miles east of Tallapoosa on Hwy. 78. The park is just a few miles from the old farm of Robert Greer Killgore and the "family burying ground." This family cemetery, which contains about 80 graves, has been lovingly cared for over the years by two of Robert G. Killgore's great- granddaughters, Geneva and Geraldine. There are several other cemeteries where Kilgore ancestors are buried within just a few miles of the park. The reunion is held on the second Saturday after the 4th of July. We get started about 10:00 A.M., and we bring covered dishes for dinner. This is a great opportunity to meet cousins, swap information, and enjoy good family fellowship. While it originated as a renunion for descendants of Robert Greer Killgore, we welcome any and all Kilgore family and friends.
