Sister M Annchen Caulson, IHM, died Fri at Marian Convent. Born Margaret Caulson in 1914 in Dunmore, daughter of the late Charles and Mary Ann Burke Caulson Entered the IHM Congregation 2 Feb 1940; temporary vows 3 Aug 1942; final profession 2 Aug 1945. Bachelor's degree in elementary education from Marywood. Teacher at St John's Elementary School, Pittston, 1944-50; St Ann's Elementary School, 1950-51; St John's Elementary School, Scranton, 1965-66, and schools in Masontown, Syracuse, NY, Baltimore, Silver Spring and Upper Marlboro, MD, and Wilmington, DE. Prayer minister in Baltimore and at Holy Rosary Convent, Scranton, from 1992-96; companion at Marian Convent from 1996-97 and prayer minister there from 1997 until death. Survived by sister, Sister Laetitia Caulson, IHM; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Preceded in death by 4 brothers, John, Thomas, Frank and Brother Ronan Caulson, CP; 2 sisters, Catherine Caulson and Mary McHale. Funeral Weds, Marian Convent; St Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.

Sr M Josephine Connerton, IHM

Sister M Josephine died last night at Marywood College in the 36th year of her profession. Sister Josephine was a native of Scranton & resided here for many years before moving to Syracuse, NY. The funeral, which will be in the charge of John Durkan, will be Thursday morning in the college chapel.

Thurs, 19 Nov 1925 Sister Josephine, who died Monday at Marywood College, was buried this morning in the Sisters' cemetery at the rear of the campus. The funeral took place in the college chapel in the presence of relatives & friends of the deceased sister, and faculty & students of the college & seminary. Solemn high mass of requiem was celebrated by Rev William Cawley of Matamoras, cousin of Sister Josephine..... Pallbearers: C Boland, Thomas Boland, A Savella, William McDonald, PA Andrew, MJ Neary, PW Manley, Edward Howley, Joseph P Jordan, John Brown, PH Haggerty & A Haggerty.(additionally it listed 18 other priests who participated &/or attended).

Sr M Huberta IHM died yesterday at Mount St Mary's. Born in Williamsport 12 Jan 1875, daughter of Hugh Cullen. Entered novitiate at St Rose's 2 Feb 1903. Professed 15 Aug 1905. Taught at St John's Pittston, St John's South Scranton, St Basil's Dushore, & Holy Rosary North Scranton until she took ill. Funeral Weds from Mt St Mary's.

Sr M Theophane, RSM, the former Alice Cecilia Finn, of Sacred Heart High School, Plains, died last night in Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. Entered novitiate at St Mary's Convent, Wilkes-Barre, 21 Jan 1916. Attended St Cecilia's Academy, Scranton, and graduated from St Mary's High School Wilkes-Barre. Junior and senior high teacher for the past 36 years in Wilkes-Barre, Plymouth, Nanticoke, Hazelton, Freeland, and Honesdale. James Finn of Miners Mills is only immediate relative. Funeral Weds from St Mary's Convent, S Washington St, Wilkes-Barre; St Mary's Church of the Immaculate Conception; St Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Twp.

Sr M Lucretia Gilroy, IHM

Sr M Lucretia Gilroy, member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Order for more than 71 years, died Fri at the Main Convent, Marywood, after an illness. Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Patrick & Mary Finnerty Gilroy, she enterd the IHM Congregation on 15 Aug 1905 & took her vows 16 Jul 1908. Sr Lucretia taught music for more than half a century at both Marywood Seminary & College. Chairman of the music department prior to retirement & influential in establishing many outstanding music programs. Survived by 2 sisters, Mrs Joseph Murphy of Rosemont, PA & Mrs Allen Crane of Scranton; nieces & nephews. Funeral Mon from the Marian Convent; St Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.

This morning death claimed Sr Mary Hostia of St Rose's convent in Carbondale following an illness that extended over several years. Formerly Miss Mary Langan, member of a prominent family in South Scranton. Entered the sisterhood at ceremonies at Marywood 13 years ago. Survived by sister, Helen of Scranton; and brothers, Rev Peter of Philadelphia, James of Cleveland, Michael & Manus of Scranton & Thomas J of Buffalo. Funeral Sat, St Rose church; burial tba.

Sr M Albert Malay, RSM

Dunmore nun reaches post among lepers -- Sister M Albert, former Mary Malay, arrives in British Guiana.

Inflamed with the same zeal which inspired the famed Fr Damien to make it his life's work, Sister Mary Albert of the Mercy Order, the former Miss Mary Malay of Dunmore, arrived this week in Georgetown, British Guiana, where she will work in the leper colony.

She was accompanied by Sister Mary Concepta Giroux of Hazleton. They sailed from New York on 12 Nov & will join nine other nuns who are voluntarily serving in the leper colony located a few miles inland from Georgetown, the principle port.

Sister Mary Albert is the daughter of the late M/M Patrick Malay. She is the sister of Miss Catherine Malay, a teacher in the public schools here. Among her brothers are Leo & Daniel Malay of Dunmore, Frank Malay of Boston, & Patrick Malay of Chester.

She received her early education at St Paul's High School, Green Ridge. She is a trained nurse, and after entering the religious order, was stationed at Mercy Hospitals in Scranton & Wilkes-Barre and at St Mary's Hospital in Scranton.

Sr M Albert will work with the leper children in the colony. About 20% of the lepers in the colony are Roman Catholic. There are two chapels on the grounds, one for Catholics & one for non-Catholics. New schools for the unaffected children & adults are the latest addition to the building group. It is to these children, whose parents are lepers but who themselves are untainted by the disease, that Sr Mary Concepta will min... (article cut off).

Sr Mary Albert Malay, RSM, died Tues in Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. Member of the Sisters of Mercy for 52 years. The former Mary Alberta Malay, born in Dunmore. St Paul's School, Scranton; Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Scranton. Served as supervisor of nursing at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre; Mercy Hospital & Maternity Hospital Scranton. Served the sick in Leprosarium in Mahaica, Gyana, for seven years & cared for orphans in Sylvan Heights, Harrisburg, for four years. Lived at Mercy Center Convent for the past six years. Survived by sister, Mrs Catherine Healey of Scranton; nieces & nephews. Funeral Thurs from Mercy Center Convent, Dallas; Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Dallas; St Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township; McLaughlin FH.

Sr M Thomas, member of IHM for 60 years, died this morning in St Joseph Hospital, Carbondale. Daughter of the late Thomas & Catherine O'Boyle McAndrew of Hawley. Entered novitiate at St Rose Convent, Carbondale, Sep 1892; received habit Apr 1893; professed Jul 1895. Music teacher & school superior in Carboindale, Alquippa, Lock Haven, Pittsburgh, Sayre, Portland OR & Edgewood RI; most recently St Mary's, Dunmore. Survived by sister, Mrs Catherine Finnegan, Scranton. Rev Gerard Finnegan of Stanley ND is a nephew & Sr M Bernardina, dean of students at Marywood is a niece. Funeral Sat from St Agnes Place, Elmhurst; St Catherine's Church & cemetery.

Sr M Stanislaus O'Neill, IHM

Sr M Stanislaus, IHM, died at Mary Keller Hospital Sunday morning after a lingering illness. The remains were taken to Mt St Mary's, funeral from there Tues. Sister of the Honorable James J O'Neill, Lackawanna Judge. Born in Carbondale. Entered novitiate at St Rose's, Carbondale 22 Jan 1879; professed 19 Apr 1881. During 38 years in religion taught music at St John's, South Scranton; St Patrick's, White Haven; and St Patrick's, West Scranton. Superior at Danville, Lock Haven and Ashley. In Sep 1914 sent to Maryknoll, Ossinning (sic), NY, to train the Teresians connected with the foreign missions in the practices of religious life. Recalled after 2 years & made superior at St Joseph's, Danville. Made superior of St John's, Pittston, in Jan 1917 and relieved in June due to illness.

Sr M Elizabeth O'Sullivan, member of the IHM order for 43 years & resident of the Marian Convent for several months, died Sun in Moses Taylor Hospital after an illness. Born in Brooklyn NY, daughter of the late Dennis & Elizabeth Doherty O'Sullivan. Entered the order 28 Feb 1929 & prefessed vows 31 Jul 1931. Elementary school teacher at St John's Susquehanna, Holy Rosary Scranton, St John's Pittston, St Mary of the Mount Pittsburgh, St Bernardine Baltimore & Holy Trinity in Poughkeepsie NY. Survived by brother, Frank of Brooklyn; sister, Mrs Mary Miller of FL; nieces & nephews. Funeral Tues, Marian Convent Chapel, St Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.

Sr M Clement Shermanson, IHM, died Sun at Marian Convent, Marywood. Would have been in the order 50 years on Thurs. Born in Coeur d'Alene ID, daughter of the late Joel and Henrietta Kulberg Shermanson. Entered order 13 Jul 1918 & pronounced final vows on 2 Aug 1921. Assigned to St Patrick's School, Scranton, and Sacred Heart School, Jermyn. Taught most of her life in schools near Coeur D'Alene, Twin Falls, Portland & Gresham ID. Survived by sister, Marie Shermanson of Wallace ID and brother, Henry of Coeur d'Alene. Funeral Tues from Marian Convent, St Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.
