There are two extensively researched Southwick lineages in the US, and probably most American Southwick's descend from one of them.

The Quaker Southwick's descend from Lawrence and Cassandra Southwick, who arrived in Massachusetts, around 1627, possibly on a second crossing (doesn’t count!) of the Mayflower. According to Neal Southwick, they came from Kingswinford in Staffordshire. Their progeny was documented 120 years ago in:

Genealogy of the descendants of Lawrence and Cassandra Southwick of Salem,

Mass. James M. Caller and Mrs. M.A. Ober. J. H. Choate & Co., Printers, Salem

MA 1881.

This book has been reprinted in modern times by Higginson and probably other publishers, and there is an LDS microfilm, reel number 18,120. Another large Southwick kindred descends from Joseph Southwick, who left England in 1849 and went to Utah. This large LDS (Mormon) family lives mostly in the western US. Neal Southwick chronicled this family twenty years ago:

The English ancestry and American posterity of Joseph Southwick 1703-1980.

Neal S. Southwick. Joseph Southwick Family Organization.

Printed by Ricks College Press, Rexburg ID 83440, 1981. No ISBN.

I cannot find this book or its publisher online.

I have a copy. Neal Southwick is still (in 2000) on the faculty of Ricks College (www.ricks.edu) but I have not corresponded with him since 1983.

"Lawrence and Cassandra (Burnell) Southwick of Salem MA, Their English

Antecedents" in The American Genealogist, 71:193, 1996, Brandon, J.C. and Delorey, J.I.

This recent publication, which I haven’t seen, is listed on

Norris Taylor’s Southwick Web site:

As I mentioned before, my maternal grandfather was Earnest Alonzo Southwick (Caller & Ober #2058, page 371), in the 8th generation from Lawrence Southwick. His father Aaron Southwick was probably the last in my line raised as a Quaker, though by coincidence I am married to a Quaker and am an attendee of the West Knoxville Friends Meeting (FGC).
