According to my grandfather, we descend from the eldest son of James Nuckolls I.   I have a copy at home of Bertha Nuckolls’ book.  Sadly, Bertha died before completing her work and the book went to print without my great-grandfather or my grandfather’s generations mentioned.

As a start for those folks looking at the Kansas Nuckolls, here is sort of a nutshell of what I’ve collected so far...

My grandfather, Wil Lou Nuckolls (b. Scammon Kansas Dec 2, 1896 the 13th of 14 children of Charles Dabney Nuckolls and Elizabeth Bell Stevens, and died January 1992) had forgotten which of the last entries on Bertha Nuckolls chart (fold out from the back of the book) was his great-grandfather.  He wasn’t sure if it was Samuel or Nathaniel Nuckolls.

I’ve got the list  of all the names and birth dates of my grandfather’s siblings, as well as the burial location of Charles Dabney Nuckolls (he deserted his family in 1902, and ultimately ended up in Greeley Colorado, where he is buried.) Both Charles Dabney Nuckolls and Elizabeth Bell Stevens immigrated into the newly formed Kansas territory from somewhere in Illinois.   I don’t  know whether they were man and wife and immigrated together, or whether they immigrated separately and then met and married in Kansas.

Elizabeth Bell Stevens Nuckolls and some of her children (and now inluding my grandfather) are buried at the Hosey Hill Cemetery of Wier, Kansas.   Elizabeth Bell Stevens Nuckolls was born sometime in 1848 (it’s on her grave marker).  Her oldest children were grown adults by the time my grandfather was born.   We have found only one photograph of her - taken in a studio with her 4 sisters - all looking like Victorian battle-axes in their stiff black Taffeta dresses with leg-o-mutton sleeves.  Elizabeth was almost 6 feet tall.

My grandmother, Susie Elizabeth Imhoff Nuckolls (b April 17, 1898, and died Jan 1990) helped my father gather the information about the family.  It was necessary because my father went to work for a defense-oriented aviation company and needed to have the highest possible security clearances.  All the family information, going back 3 generations was required for the security process.  We lost the track with Grampa Wil’s father, Charles Dabney Nuckolls, because of my gramdpa being so young and most of his oldest brother’s and sisters being already dead, so nobody was around to remember anything about Charles Dabney.

My Grandma Susie Imhoff Nuckolls became very interested in the family genealogies of both the Imhoff and Nuckolls’ families as a result of helping my father, and became a newspaper clipper...  I salvaged several small boxes of family vital statistics that she cut from the Pittsburgh Kansas local paper (Cherokee, Wier, Scammon, East and West Mineral are all villages in the Pittsburgh Kansas area).  Most of the items were Imhoff data, but I think there are a few Nuckolls things in there as well.

Anyhow, I’ve gone on long enough - and I would love to help to provide whatever I can to further the resarch on the Kansas Nuckolls’ families.

Best regards,
Cheryl Nuckolls Ryder

P.S. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t until after I married Martin Ryder that I found out his father’s family came from Carthage Missouri - just a few miles east of Cherokee/Weir/Scammon area of Kansas !!  We’re both of us descendants of the Kansas Territory Homesteaders.

P.P.S.  Do you feel as if you dropped a nickel into a juke box that won’t stop playing !!   Getting me started on family history is one way to make sure that I never shut up.
Ok, I’ll shut up for awhile. <grin>.

Somewhere down the road I'll probably decide to be more active in my participation,
but right now school keeps me busy enough.

I'm afraid my knowledge of my branch of the Nuckolls family is sketchy at
best, but here's what I know. I don't know the proper formatting of this,
so I'll start with myself and siblings, then work backwards.

Matthew Aaron Nuckolls born 13 July 1977
Joseph Charles Nuckolls born 18 September 1981
Andrew James Nuckolls born 12 July 1983
Rebecca Marie Nuckolls born 8 July 1987

Our parents are:
Jimmy Charles Nuckolls born 26 April 1951
Brenda Sue Hoover born 15 January 1951

My dad's parents are:
James Charles Nuckolls -still alive, don't know birth date
Helen ? -still alive, don't know birth date

My dad's dad's parents are:
Joseph Charles Nuckolls -died sometime in the 50's
Elsie -died November 1997

I can gather missing info fairly easily, but I need to know exactly what
sort of information is pertinent. For example, Joseph and Elsie were
farmers in western Kansas, but looking at the web site, I don't see that
such information is wanted.
