Grover Cleveland Hunsick Sr.

Told by Grover C. Jr.

When Grover Sr. was a young man he left the Hunsuck farm in Mecklenburg, NC, together with his wife Edna and stepson, to try homesteading in Utah. One day when Grover was chopping wood, he slipped and cut off three of his toes. He knew he would bleed to death if he did not get help immediately. Grover told his wife how to put a tourniquet on, and how to hitch the wagon. They only had one horse, and it was spooked by the smell of blood. Edna drove cross-country, with one horse and a wagon, a 5-year-old, and Grover bleeding to death, 40 miles. She managed to stop the train. Grover received medical help, and lived to tell the tale. Can you imagine 40 miles?
