The book entitled:
Genealogical and Personal History of the Upper Monongahela Valley, West Virginia
Reprinted in Two Volumes

Vol. II
pg. 1026-1027
The family of which Dr. Henry Sanford YOST, of Fairmont, is a worthy representative, was
planted in this country in the early part of the seventeenth century, emigrating thither
from the Southern Part of Germany, where generations of the family had lived and died,
performing well their part in the various callings they followed:
(I) John YOST, the earliest ancestor of whom we have definite information, emigrated from
Bavaria, Germany, in 1773, then having attained young manhood, and landed in New York
City, where he hired out at manual labor for one year to pay his ship passage to the
colonies, as was the custom of that day. Later he removed to Elizabeth, NJ, and
subsequently to Trenton, NJ, and for seven years served in the service of the Continental
army, participating in the battles of that neighborhood. After the cessation of
hostilities he settled on Indian Creek, Monongalia county, Virginia, being among the first
in that region, which was then infested with Indians and wild animals.
He married, at Elizabeth NJ, Katie SNUICHE (SNOOK), of Holland and English parentage, who
came this country about the same time as her husband, a woman of character and education,
well qualified to rear her seven sons in the way they should go, they becoming
representative citizens of the community. Children:
Henry, Elizabeth, John of whom further; Aaron, William, Peter, Niers, David.
I personally descend through John, Rev. War Patriot and Katie SNOOK son Peter YOST.
Now, in this account it states that this John served from Trenton NJ for 7 years. Does
this clear up which John I'm looking for?
At a library here in town I found this in an index book of Rev. War Service
Records:
John YOST srv as Pvt in Morgan's Rifle Regt of Cont Troops
John YOST or YOUST srv as Pvtin 1st Regt of Cont. Troops from PA
John or as John JOST, srv as Pvt in 1st PA Regt
John SRV IN 5TH PA Regt

I dont' know if any of these are the service listing of the John mentioned in the Book
above. Does anyone else know?
#1) Does anyone know which ship in
1773 he arrived on?
Ship 'Sally 23 Aug 1773'
