1. ENOCH8 SARGENT, SR. (TIMOTHY CHASE7, TIMOTHY6, TIMOTHY5, CHARLES4, WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, RICHARD1) was born June 02, 1775 in Williamstown, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, and died 1871 in Rockdale Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. He married (1) ABIGAIL CHASE Bef. 1799 in Pittsfield, Orange County, Vermont, daughter of SOLOMON CHASE and ABIGAIL CHASE. He married (2) PRUDA BACON July 22, 1813 in Pittsfield, Rutland Co., Vermont.

Family information places his birth at 4 Jul 1775, but family bible states 2 June. Shreve Ridge Cemetery records; Rutland Co., VT vital records, all pertinent census records.{the Sargent Sampler, vol 1 #4] married by Asa Gaines, J.P., as Enoch Sargent (not Chase). A search for a probate, will or other inventory of the estates of Enoch or either of his wives has been fruitless.

Enoch was living in Rutledge, Vermont in 1812. He later moved to Southwestern New York and lived on an Indian reservation on the Upper Allegheny River. His sons learned the lumbering business and would raft lumber down to Pittsburgh and then walk back. (Source: Thomas Rea Negus narrative.}

 

Enoch Sargent, Sr. is buried at Shreve Ridge Cemetery, near Union City, Erie County, Pennsylvania.

 

By 1830 he lived in Cattaraugus County, New York- see History of Cattaraugus County, New York, 1879, pp. 425.

 

1850 Census, Bloomfield Twp., Crawford County, Pennsylvania, shows Enoch Sargent, Sr., age 74. living with Pruda, age 50, and John, age 15. Enoch is identified as having been born in Massachusetts.

It is the recollection of Ford Sargent that Enoch Sargent also raised an adopted girl by the name of Lechtie (?) Bacon. The Family Group Sheet prepared by Patricia Hunt Manusov states that Enoch was drafted at Steuben County, New York on December 10, 1836 and was honorably discharged at Buffalo, New York on February 20, 1837. This was in the Patriot War or the New York Frontier Disturbance.

US Census October 3, 1850, Bloomfield Twp., Crawford County, Pennsylvania, lists Enoch, age 33, born in Pennsylvania.

US Census June 23, 1870, Union Twp., Erie County, Pennsylvania, p. 21, lists Enoch as a farmer, age 54, born in Vermont.

Source: Application for Bounty Land dated June 20, 1857, based on service in New York Frontier Disturbances. The application states that Enoch was a resident of Union, Erie County, Pennsylvania when he was drafted on or about December 1, 1836 at Steuben County, New York. He served as a private in the Company commanded by Captain John O. Riley in the Volunteers regiment in the "Patriot War" or the New York Frontier Disturbance. His term was from December 1, 1836 to February 20, 1837. He was discharged at Buffalo, New York. He was making aa application under the Act of March 3, 1855.

He came to Hurley, South dakota in 1873.

Amy Negus Sargent is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Bloomfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. In The History of Mount Pleasant Cemetery, by Carl T. Blakeslee, Sr., 1980, p. e of Dedication, it states that Amy Negus Sargent founded the Willing Workers Aid Society at Mount Pleasant on August 27, 1893. She was 77 at the time.

1901.p. 328: He was the ninth child and seventh son of Richard and Margaret Newbold. He was a farmer owning 200 acres of land in Bloomfield, PA, being 1/2 half of his father's farm at the head of Lake Canada, formerly Oil Lake. He was a good Christian man. In height he was six feet.

Notes for TIMOTHY C. SARGENT:

Timothy was captured during the Civil War and the Negus narrative states that the family received a letter from him when he was in Andersonville prison.

Timothy Sargent enrolled in Capt. Stults' Co., 145 Regt. Pa. Inf. ( which later became Co. E., 145 Regt. Pa. Inf.) in Erie, Pennsylvania on August 15, 1862. He was 34 years old and had blue eyes and brown hair. He was wounded in battle on December 13, 1862 near Fredericksburg, Virginia and sent to Washington by the surgeon. He returned to camp on February 21, 1863. On April 28, 1863 he was left in camp because he was sick. In June 1863 he was detailed to work as a teamster in the ammunition division. On June 16, 1864 he was captured. He died on November 15, 1864 (although there is some reference to October 20, 1864 as the date of death) in a prisoner of war camp in Florence, South Carolina.
