HOPKINS, Arthur Francis (Oct. 18, 1794 - Nov. 10, 1865)
Hopkins came to Alabama in 1814 after growing up in Virginia and attending
several academies in North Carolina and Virginia. Settling in Huntsville,
he established a successful law practice. Also a successful businessman, he
became a large landholder, operating plantations in Mississippi and Alabama
and ending his business career as president of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad.
His political career spanned the period of Alabama history from the
inception of statehood in 1819 to the close of the Civil War. He was a
member of the first constitutional convention in 1819 and a member of the
Alabama Senate from 1822 to 1824. In 1834 he was elected by the legislature
to the state Supreme Court but resigned his position less than a year
later. During the Civil War he served as state agent for Alabama hospitals.
He died in Mobile shortly after the war.
HOPKINS, Juliet Ann (Opie) (May 7, 1818 - Mar. 9, 1890)
This native of Virginia had to leave school due to her father's death and
take charge of the estate, which included 2,000 slaves. At the beginning of
the Civil War she was sent by the state of Alabama to Richmond, Virginia, to
establish an Alabama hospital. During the four years of the war she became
a Confederate heroine, and she was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines,
being made lame for the rest of her life. She also sold most of her
properties in Alabama, Virginia, and New York and gave almost $500,000 to
the Confederate cause. In appreciation of her untiring efforts her portrait
was placed on Alabama state money for the denominations of 50 dollars and 25
cents. She died in Washington, D.C.

Hi Adrianne,
Here is my additional information on my ggg-grandparents.
SOLOMON HOPKINS ( 1830 - October 29, 1862 )
Solomon Hopkins was a private in Captain Nall's Company K, 8th Alabama Infantry.
Solomon enlisted at Radfordsville on May 16, 1861, and died on October 29, 1862 in
Bristol, Virginia. His widow, Nancy Caroline Bolling Hopkins filed a claim for
accounts due him on April 20, 1863,
and received $43.63 on August 25, 1864. Solomon did not leave a will.
Nancy Caroline Hopkins never remarried. She raised three small
children alone; Sarah Francis, John S. (Doc) and Louisa A. (Lisa ).
Nancy died in 1893 and was buried in Perry County, in the community previously
known as Radfordsville. According to family history, she is buried in an Indian
cemetery. This cemetery contains about a dozen graves, each covered in a mound of
rocks. A tombstone for Nancy Hopkins was placed in the cemetery by descendants in
recent years. No other graves are
identified with tombstones. Nancy Bolling Hopkins was the great-granddaughter of
William Bolling and Amelia Randolph, each of whom was reported to be a descendant of
Pocahontas.

I found your notes on Solomon Hopkins, Sr. to be very interesting. Especially
transactions involving Samuel Bolling and Tully Choice. Samuel Bolling was the
son of William Bolling and he married Abigail Choice, daughter of Tully Choice.
Samuel and Abigail's son Samuel Jr.was the father of Nancy Caroline Bolling.
I'm still looking for further information on John Hopkins and Lisa Hopkins Hale.

INFORMATION FOR LAMBETH HOPKINS OF PERRY COUNTY, ALABAMA
AND MILAM COUNTY, TEXAS
OBITUARY FOR LAMBETH HOPKINS, THE YOUNGER
Obituary for Lambeth Hopkins--copied and sent to me by Bess Hall Pearce. Bess Hall Pearce
was a granddaughter of Lambeth Hopkins and was in correspondence with cousins and aunts
and uncles who knew Hopkins family history. She died in 1986, I believe.
From the Texas Baptist Herald, 5 March 1874
Earth has its appointed seasons, and leaves have their time to fall; but thou oh death!
comest at all times a a thief at night.
Bro. Lambreth (sic.) Hopkins was born in the State of Georgia, September 24, 1800; was
married in the year 1824 to Miss Susan Adcock, of Alabama; joined the Methodist Church in
Alabama in 1832, and lived a consistent member until the day of his death, which occurred
upon the 8th day of July last. Bro. Hopkins came to Milam County, Texas, in 1869.
To say that this dear brother was a kind husband, a lenient father, a true friend, a true
Christian, a charitable man to the poor, does not express all that he was. In Alabama he
was famous for his good works as well as in Texas, as all can testify. Thus another good
man has fallen. We would commend his numerous relatives and friends to God and his grace,
who is able to keep them unto eternal life. A.E. Vandivere Texas Christian Advocate please
copy.

Above information from photostated copies of Lambeth Hopkins Age Book and Lambeth Hopkins
Bible records certified by Carr P. Collins, 1959 and other family records.
FAMILY BIBLE AND OTHER RECORDS OF LAMBETH HOPKINS, THE YOUNGER
I have a photocopy of what appears to be the earliest record of Hopkins family births and
deaths as recorded by Lambeth (b. 1800)
I hereby certify this to be a True and Correct Copy of a Family record sheet of the
old and original family records of Lambeth Hopkins. These records are now in the
possession of Bess H. Pearce, Olive View, California.
In witness whereof, I hereunto SET MY HAND AND SEAL OF OFFICE this the 29thd day of
December, A.D., 1959.
In this original record, Elizabeth Hopkins death date is given as July 27th, 1847. A
record of birth and death for John Hopkins, Sr. is not given.
Lambeth Hopkins birth date of 1800 is recorded but his death date is not recorded.
The record for Aureny and Cireny are water marked and almost totally illegible, which may
be the reason that the later Age Book was started.
Susan Elin is recorded as Susan Elender and the date of her birth is difficult to read. It
could be the 6th as recorded in later entries, but it could also be the 11th, depending
upon how the pen strokes are read.
The record of the birth and death for Jane has a word which may be Mahala
which precedes the Jane. The word is in much smaller writing, and crowded in
to precede the Jane.
In addition to the births of Lambeth and Elizabeths children there are recorded the
births of other children as well as the birth and death dates for William Wilson, husband
of Lamberts sister Mahala. Interestingly, neither Mahalas birth nor death date
is recorded. The dates for the children occur after 1838, so they cant be William
Wislsons children.
William Willson was bornd in the yeare of our Lord 1807 and died July 11th 1838 his days
was 31 years 4 months and 1 day
Dates of the children recorded:
Fanny was bornd in febuary 23th in the yeare of our Lord 1839
Mariah was born June (?) 6 in the yeare of our Lord 1841 or 6 (Hard to read)
Samuel was born August 16th in the yeare of our Lord 1847
Martin was bornd July the 27th in the yeare of our Lord 1849
Easter was bornd March 10th in the year of our Lord 1852
Lewis was bornd October the 23 in the year of our Lord 1854
The following records are written in a smaller hand toward the bottom of the page. Part of
the page has been damaged (torn/some water damage) and is unreadable. Because of the dates
the records may refer to another family.
Lucy was bornd January (?) in the year of our Lord 1857
Mariah was bornd January 4 (?) in the yeare of our Lord 18--
Hester (?) was bornd April 18th in the yeare of our Lord 1857
Two pages over are recorded:
David was bornd febuary the 20th 1859
Richard was bornd Janury (?) 19th 1861
Betsy was bornd Novem(ber?) 4th 1861 or 8 [depending on the reading of the pen stroke.]
Note that two of the children in the above list have the same names as younger children of
Lambeth Hopkins, elder as named in his will.
Susan (must have been Susan Elin or Elender) Died March 2 1863
Bety died March 8
Esther do March 15
Susans baby March 22
Fanny do March 28
Fannys child March 29
These doleful records must have recorded a time of great grief for the Hopkins family.
LAMBETH HOPKINS AGE BOOK
I hereby certify this to be a True and Correct Copy of a Family record sheet from
the old Lambeth Hopkins Family Bible. These records are now in the possession of Bess H.
Pearce, Olive view, California.
In witness whereof, I hereunto SET MY HAND AND SEAL OF OFFICE this the 29thd day of
December, A.D., 1959.
The following is as accurate a transcription of the Age Book as I can make. After
inspecting the copy closely, I have decided that the word bornd does have a
d on the end of the word. The writing is very uniform on this document and
looks as if the entries had been all done at the same time with the exception of the
record of Lambeths own death date. Another record which includes the same
information with the addition of some other births appears as if the entries were made at
different times and parts of it show water damage.

Family Bible Records
I hereby certify this to be a True and Correct Copy of a Family Record sheet from
the old Lambeth Hopkins Family Bible. These records are not in the possession of Bess H.
Pearce, Olive View, California.
In witness whereof, I hereunto SET MY HAND AND SEAL OF OFFICE this the 29th day of
December, A.D. 1959.
Rather than copy records again, I will merely note the exceptions from the Age Book. the
AGE Book is most likely Lambeth Hopkins work. The Bible entries are in a more
decorative hand.
Gives Susannahs name as Susannah whereas the Age Book gives it as Susan. Age book
has death date of July 28th, 1847 Bible record as July 29th.
Bible records marriage of Lambeth and Susannah Hopkins as June 4, 1826.
Sarah Anns name is recorded as Sarah Ann, the Age Book records it as Sarahan.
Susan Elender is recorded as Susan Elender, the Age Book records it as Susan Elin.
William W. Hopkins is recorded as William W., the Age Book records the name as W. W.
Hopkins.
Jane is not mentioned in the Bible record.
From a letter by Flora d. England, genealogist of Marion (Perry County) Alabama, to Bess
Hall Pearce:
I found no estate here in the name of Elizabeth Hopkins and no deed by which she
conveyed to anyone the title she had on the NW 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Sec. 33, T22, R7. However
I did find, in Deed book R, p. 365, a deed by which Lambeth Hopkins and Susan, his wife,
conveyed this piece of land to John A. Hopkins and Irena Russell, along with several other
parcels. When you read my summary of this deed, you will see that Lambeth conveyed to them
the whole of Sec. 33, T22, R7, which includes the NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 - the piece
Elizabeth had title to. The date of this deed is 20 years after the death of Elizabeth as
you gave it to me. (I stopped at 1870)
In the tract book, I note that Samuel Adcock entered land on the same day that
Elizabeth Hopkins did, also entering land in the same area were ?? Hopkins and John A.
Hopkins, Isaac Russell, Lambeth Hopkins, Wm. Adcock and Wiley Tubb.
Comment--If Lambeth and Susan conveyed the whole of Sec. 33, T22, R7 to John Alexander
Hopkins and Irena Russell, that would include land entered by both Samuel and William
Adcock on the same day as Elizabeth Hopkins entered her land in 1837. I have included the
land entry records for Elizabeth Hopkins, and Samuel and William Adcock to show a possible
connection. In some notes John Adcock is given as the father of Susannah Adcock, Lambeth
Hopkins wife. However, of the three Adcocks, he was the one who did not own any land
adjacent to that of Elizabeth Hopkins, although he did own land in Greene and Hale
counties. JTV
INFORMATION ON JOHN AND ELIZABETH HOPKINS, PARENTS OF LAMBETH HOPKINS, THE YOUNGER
From a letter in the possession of Bess Hall Pearce before she died:
This from Leila M. Wooley whose mother was Priscilla Hopkins, sister of our
grandfather William Williams Hopkins. Sorry do not have the date.
Your letter came only yesterday and replying thereto will say that Mama does not
know m;uch about the ancestry, it seems tho, she says that great-grandfather Hopkins was
named John and possibly John S. but she is not sure about the S. He lived in Tennessee on
Duck Creek near Shelbyville, in fact owed a place there which he sold a short time prior
to the time he volunteered. He was wounded in Talladega, Ala., seems only a flesh wound,
and he bled to death soon after his return home in or near Shelbyville, Tennessee, on
December 12, not sure of the year but quite likely 1812. This trip was made on horseback.
She does not know who his mother was but he married a Miss Elizabeth Autrey, they had
eight children, six girls and two boys.
Children were: John, Lambeth, Priscilla (born 1798 according to the 1880 census, Milam
Co., Texas) md John F. Shaffer 12-14-1841; Mahala md. William Wilson 9-21-1830 (He was
born March 10th 1807 and died July 11th 1838 according to the earlier Age Book.) Elizabeth
married Matthew Tubb; Nancy married Fisher.
Additional notes of Bess Hall Pearce: Susannahs mother was named Elizabeth -
she died in 1816. Her fathers name was John. Her brothers and sisters were: Sam,
John, William, George, Johana and Nancy
From the South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Magazine, v 21, p. 125: Marriage and
Death Notices in the City Gazette.
Married on Thursday evening Mr. John Adcock of Jacksonborough to Miss Elizabeth
Cambridge of this city. Saturday May 19, 1792.
Neither of the above notes constitutes proof that this John Adcock and Elizabeth Cambridge
were the father and mother of Susannah Adcock. JTV

I am reseaching HOPKINS in Jefferson and Tuscaloosa
Counties, Alabama;
Laurens, S.C.; and Georgia. I know virutally nothing about my
great-grandmother Martha Missouri Hopkins, only that everyone called her
aunt "Savannah."
Here is my direct line
* John Winston Parsons (1854-1926 AL) and Martha Missouri "Savannah"
Hopkins (1853 GA - 1902 AL)
* David Orlando Parsons (1882-1947 AL) and Leigh Archevia Roberts
(1894-1985 AL)
* Ruel Milton Parsons (1915-still living AL) and Fay Jacqueline Robinson
(1921 England - 1991).
Here is all I know about her roots:
Martha Missouri was called Savannah. She was born in Georgia. Her father
was born in South Carolina and her mother was born in Alabama. (Page 28 A,
Roll 20..)
Living next door to John and Savannah in 1910 was a James Hopkins and his
family. He is likely a relative of Savannah's. He was born Sept. 1869 and
has been married 30 years. He is working at the time in a brick yard. His
wife is Irene, born Apr 1870 in Alabama. Their children are:
Lela B. Dec 1888 in Alabama.
C. Maltie (?) a son, born Nov 1890 in Alabama
John, Oct 1892, Al.
Gertrude, Feb 1896 in Al.
Bertha May, Sept 1898 in Al..
Martha Missouri's father's name may have been, Thomas. Her marriage
certificate says she was married at a Thomas Hopkins' house. .
