BRUTAL MURDERS IN TIPPERARY
The following is from the correspondent of the Tipperary Free Press, the Radical journal of that county:—
“Cashel, Sept. 8, 1838.
“Sir,—I am grieved to have to inform you that the peace and happiness which so generally reigned over this district these months past was last night disturbed and woefully broken by the commission of two murders committed on the same line of road leading from this town, and at different hours. The ill-fated and unhappy victims of revenge, blended with intoxication, were Toby Bourke, of Garnacarty, near this town, and William Ahern, of Drishane, three miles distant. They were both married, and left large families to deplore their loss. Bourke was brutally murdered convenient to Rosanna, in the suburbs of this town, and William Ahern met the same fate at the hill of Grenane ; stones were the deadly weapons used in each case. I refrain for the presernt, for prudential reasons, from mentioning the names of the persons implicated in these barbarous murders, but I have no doubt that the perpetrators will be brought to justice, several having been already arrested. This day an inquest was held on the body by Captain Bradshaw, coroner when a verdict of 'Wilful murder' was returned. The worthy coroner then proceeded at a rapid pace to the lands of Drishane, accompanied by Chief Constable Blake, where he held an inquest on the body of William Ahern, but owing to the late hour he commenced, and after the examination of three witnesses and Surgeon Heuston, he adjourned the inquest until Monday next, the 10th inst., to be held at 11 o'clock, at the police barrack of Donaskeigh.
“The principals said to be concerned in each murder were arrested by the police, and are at present confined in Tipperary bridewell.”

James Ahern
At the house of Charles M’Carthy, Esq., Kanturk, on the 23d. inst., James, son of the late James Ahern, Esq., of Liscarroll, aged 20 years. Having been there but a few days on his return from Baltimore, United States. Decline, produced by the climate he had left put a speedy end to his promising career. Escaping the dangers of a long and hazardous voyage and spending his last moments under the roof of an affectionate and attached sister, he felt rejoiced and thankful to Providence that his remains were to be deposited with those of his ancestors, in the land of his birth. The grave has seldom closed upon a young gentleman of his age possessing more amiability of manner and promising talent of a high order. He will be long regretted by those to whom he was most dear, and all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. May he rest in peace.

Michael Ahern
At Mallow, of fever, Michael Ahern, Esq. Struck down in the vigour of youth, and in the commencement of a useful and honourable career, his premature death is a source of the deepest affliction, not alone to an amiable and interesting wife, whom it consigns to early widowhood, but of the sincerest sorrow and regret to all who enjoyed the happiness of his friendship. Upright, honourable, and high-minded possessed of a refined and cultivated understanding, and a warm and generous heart. It was impossible to know him intimately without loving him deeply ; and this was sufficiently evinced by the expressions of unfeigned sorrow perceptible in the countenances of the numerous friends who followed his remains to their final resting place.

Eliza Ahearn
At her residence, the Quay, Dungarvan, on Monday, the 25th instant, Mrs. Eliza Ahearn, at the age of fifty seven years. At half-past ten on the Wednesday morning following her remains will be conveyed to the parish church, followed by a large concourse of sympathising relatives and friends, who flocked in vast numbers, from the remotest country districts, to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of her whose kindness and benevolence nearly all had some tangible proof or kindly recollection of. After the usual ceremonies of the Church were performed, the remains were lowered into the family vault, amid the tears and prayers and regret of sorrowing thousands, between whom and their benefactor the dark portals of the tomb were to be closed for ever. To form a true estimate of this good woman's worth, it would be necessary to witness the grand manifestation of tender and respectful sympathy with which her remains were borne to the grave on Wednesday last, and which clearly demonstrated her value and her loss. The tearful eye, the stifled sob, and the suppressed but fervent prayer, told, in the most expressive and pathetic eloquence that Mrs. Eliza Ahearn was no ordinary loss. No more shall the widow's suffering be alleviated by her pure and unostentatatious charity ; nor the ever-flowing bounty of her hand assuage the biting pangs of poverty. No, her humane heart is cold for ever, but her immortal soul is gone to the enjoyment of that stainless crown, that bliss undying, which her manifold merits have so well earned. Her death was as composed and Christian like, as her life was exemplary and edifying. A young and amiable family have sustained an irreparable loss ; a large circle of relatives and friends will for ever deplore her as the best of benefactors ; the lowly and unrequited children of labour will miss in her the steady friend and indulgent employer—for considerable was the outlay of her capital annually on her extensive commercial premises ; and the Church, to which she has given a gifted and zealous minister, has lost by her a liberal patroness. Long shall her name be remembered in her native town as a household expression, as the synonyme of everything that was good and ennobling, and her virtuous deed she recorded with pious and grateful reverence in the lowly homesteads of poverty which her unbounded munificence had so often cheered and brightened. Peace to her good and charitable soul.—Communicated.

Daniel A'Hern
The body of a man, identified as Daniel A'Hern, was found by Joseph Light yesterday morning frozen in the ice outside of the sandbar, foot of the Third Street Levee. Deceased had been employed as teamster for Mr. Merry, and on Sunday evening, Jan. 1st he left his home in West Dubuque to feed his team in Dunleith, but it appears he never reached his destination. He was seen about 10:00 o'clock that evening in the lower part of town, and while wending his way across the river, took the track that had been abandoned by Merry's teams and fell through the ice but a few feet from the shore. A number of accidents happened in that vicinity about that time, and it is supposed he walked into a hole and thereby lost his life. Since his disappearance his family and friends have been exercised about him, but it was supposed he had gone on a visit to his relatives in the country. He was a brother-in-law of George W Starr; also of Tim Molony, and formerly worked at mining for the Level & Lead Mining Companies. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn the loss of a father and husband, snatched from them in the prime of life. His age was about thirty-three years. Coroner Leist took possession of the body and conveyed it to the afflicted family in West Dubuque, after an inquest was held upon the remains, and a verdict rendered in accordance with the above facts. Deceased was highly respected and connected and came to this city when a youth. He was a kind father, a loving husband and leaves a large circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn his untimely end.

Death of Michael Ahern
One by one in rapid succession the early settlers of Dubuque are passing away. Hardly a week leaves its impress on the record of time past, but someone whose active days of business life were spent in muilding up the material interests of the city is borne to his last rest. And now it becomes our duty to chronicle the death of Mr. Michael Ahern, residence on 15th street. The deceased passed quietly away on Saturday morning, having reached the advanced age of 62 years. He was a native of Ireland, and came to this country and to this city about 27 years ago. He has, up to within a very years, led an active working life. The disease which was the immediate cause of his death was superinduced by exposure during a very cold night a little while back. He was called suddenly from his chamber during the night time by the cry of fire—the cause of the alarm was the burning of his chimney—and being insufficiently clothed, contracted a severe cold, which finally, as before stated, brought him to his sick bed from which he never arose. Mr. Ahern was a man of positive character, upright and fair in all his dealings, and leaves behind a grateful memory. He was one of those men who make the world better (though their lives be humble) for having lived in it. He leaves a wife and one son to mourn his loss.

Died.

Timothy Ahern
The Argus, Melbourne, Australia, Tuesday, July 6 1875 — "A sudden death occurred at Hosie's Baths, Bourke-street, yesterday. Soon after noon a man whose name is unknown went in, asked and paid for a warm bath, and was shown into a bathroom by Alexander Wilson, an attendant. After the man had been in about 20 minutes Wilson knocked at the door, and getting no answer, opened it and found the man dead in the bath. The body was removed to the Melbourne Morgue, where it awaits identification and an inquest. The man was about 50 years old*, 5 ft. 9 in. or 10" high, clean shaved, wore a dark overcoat, black vest, black tweed trousers and lace-up boots. A red bruise was observed on each elbow, and one on the right temple. In his pocket were found sixpence and a return ticket from Richmond."

The result of the inquest showed the man to be Timothy Ahern, aged 80 years* He died of asphyxia from drowning, and probably fainted in the bath, and was thus drowned. A verdict of accidentally drowned was returned.

Morris O'Hearn
We regret to learn of the death of Morris O'Hearn, a correspondent of The Globe, which occurred at the residence of Mr. P. Winslow in Brandon, on Wednesday the 23d day of February. The Brandon Union pays the following tribute to his memory:

In the death of this young man Brandon loses one of its most promising youth. He had acquired a good education, which with his quick perception, social nature and generous heartedness, would have given him great adaptability in the affairs of life. He was capable and talented, and had he been spared would some time have occupied a prominent position. He passed examination for entrance to the University of Vermont last summer, with high standing, and it was his cherished ambition to take a college course, but it seemed the will of Providence to order otherwise. He taught school several terms in Brandon, Pittsford and Sudbury, and with great acceptance to his employers.

By advice of his friends he went to Florida last fall for the benefit of his health, but it was of no avail, and he returned to Brandon about three weeks ago, since which time he has not left the house of Mr. Whalen, where he has been stopping. He was greatly loved by hosts of friends. The funeral took place Feb. 25th, at the Catholic church.

DEAD UNDER A DORY.
Further Particulars About the East Braintree Mystery —
Was Michael Ahern's Death Accidental or Otherwise?
A paragraph appeared in Saturday's GLOBE announcing the finding of the body of Michael Ahern on the banks of the Monatiquot river, East Braintree, a small dory lying across him. Further investigation shows that the body was discovered by Clarence Williams of Weymouth of Weymouth, who was passing in company with another man. The peculiar position in which the boat was placed arrested his attention. He then proceeded thither, when he discovered this body lying underneath, face downward, arms extended, head toward the bank and feet toward the water. Ahearn [sic] was forty-one years of age, unmarried, and boarded with his brother-in-law, George Bennett, near the old North Church. He left there Wednesday night with some friends with the intention of going to the walking match, and was seen there during the evening. He spent the night at the house of a friend named Fred Doherty, living near his boarding place. About 10 o'clock Thursday morning he left Mr. Doherety's for the purpose of going to Boston, taking the cars at Weymouth station. He returned on the train, leaving Boston at 7 o'clock in the evening, and was met at Braintree by a friend who walked with him to Washington Square at Weymouth Landing, who represents that Ahearn was somewhat under the influence of liquor. Ahearn called at the Narragansett House between 9 and 10 o'clock, when he represented that he had secured a job at Cohasset for the season, if things proved favorable. He was seen soon after by Officer Pease, the night watchman, who called him intoxicated.
Heading Towards East Braintree.
No further trace of him alive can be found. It has been currently reported that his visit to Boston was for the purpose of drawing money from the bank, but upon inquiry his bank books are found to be all right in his trunk, although about $50. which he was known to have in ready cash, is missing. When found there was only sixty cents in his pockets.
Mr. Williams went and called Mr. Whitmarsh, who lives near by, and he immediately sent for Deputy Sheriff White, who took charge of the body and placed it in care of Undertakers Ford and McCormick, who removed it to their place of business. Medical Examiner C. C. Tower was at once notified, and upon examination of the body found a livid discoloration in the inner side of the upper lip, also a tumefaction of the central part of the forehead and fleshy part of the nose; over the right eyebrow was a deep bruise, the mark extending about two inches obliquely upwards toward the scalp, and at one point a breakage of the skin, but no evidence of the fracture of the nose underneath was discovered. In the palms of the hands, in the nostrils and in the hair and beard there was some dock mud. After this examination and what investigation has thus far been made the conclusion arrived at by the medical examiner, is that the immediate cause of death and that without further evidence he did not feel justified in performing an autopsy.
Many Do Not Feel Satisfied
with this result, notwithstanding the conclusion reached by the medical examiner, feeling that the severe bruises about the head and face indicated the possibility, as well as a strong probability, that Ahearn met his death from other causes; some fearing that foul play may have been the primary cause of death. They feel that in falling he could not have struck hard enough to have caused those bruises. Another reason given is that there being a heavy sea and strong northeast wind at the time he is supposed to have fallen, would have carried the body further south and landed it upon the opposite side of the river, and that the body , if thrown up then by the heavy sea, would have been twisted about instead of lying straight and prone, as found. The most probable solution of the mystery is that being in an intoxicated condition he wandered away down by the river bank and fell at low water, so that when the tide came up it washed over him, causing his death, and the boat, breaking from its moorings, was washed into the position as found. Many in the community think that a searching investigation into the matter should be made, so that the real truth of the affair may be discovered, if possible.

Thomas Ahearn
Death of an Estimable Young Man.
Thomas Ahearn, a young man of about 20, the son of John Ahearn, residing on Sixteenth avenue, west of Thirteenth street, died at his father's house between 4 and 5 o'clock yesterday morning. The young man was born in Philadelphia, but when quite small removed with his parents to this city. At the time of his death he was serving an apprenticeship in the railroad company's blacksmith shop, where he had been employed for three years, and he was highly esteemed for his excellent qualities by his foreman and fellow-workmen. For the past two years Mr. Ahearn had been a sufferer from consumption, but he kept his spirits bravely and never gave up hoping for the best until yesterday, always maintaining that he felt very well. A little after 4 o'clock yesterday morning, however, says the Sun, after being confined to his room for but a single day, he began to sink rapidly, and the vital spark soon fled while a prayer lingered on the young man's lips. He was the oldest of three sons and was idolized by his parents for his beauties of character, they having fond hopes for his future. He was, indeed, a model young man, and was a regular attendant upon the services at St. John's Church, being also a member of the Sodality. The funeral will leave the house about 8 o'clock on Saturday morning and proceed to St. John's Church, where appropriate services will be performed. The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to be present.

SAD DROWNING ACCIDENT.
Charlie Ahearn Drowned in the Connecticut
Charlie Ahearn, the 12-year-old son of Patrick Ahearn, who was drowned near the Hadley bridge Thursday afternoon, was an unusually bright lad and the pet of the family. He was for some time a newsboy connected with this office, and his sudden death was felt by his companions and associates. With his older brother, James, he undertook to wade from a sandbar below the bridge to the Northampton shore, when he stepped into a deep place where the current was very strong. Being unable to swim, he sank and was carried downstream. His brother, who is a swimmer but not a stong lad, started for his rescue, and succeeded in reaching him, but was seized by the drowning boy with so desparate a clutch that both seemed likely to drown. Albert Ripley of Amherst college who happened to be in a canoe off the bank above, jumped into the water and struck out for the struggling boys, whom he succeeded in disengaging, so that James could swim ashore and save himself. His efforts to save Charlie were not as successful, however, as, weighted down with his clothing and hampered by the struggles of the boy, he was soon exhausted. Having the swift current to contend with, it was all he could do to reach the shore after freeing himself from the grasp of the boy whom he found he could not save. After he left him, Charlie threw up his hands above the water once and disappeared several rods below the scene of the attempted rescue. The alarm was given in town as soon as possible and the father drove rapidly to the river. but could find no trace of the boy. Boats were put out and divers commenced their search, which was carried on until late in the evening, while the river was dragged by torchlight late in the night with no success. It is not likely that the remains will be recovered for several days, as of a half dozen boys drowned near the same place, the bodies were not recovered until they were washed up on the banks between Hockanum and Smith's Ferry. In the meantime the suspense of the parents is painful. [See 10 August 1885.]

Kate (O'Neill) Ahearn
Cork— . . . At Youghal one day a week ago a most remarkable demonstration was made in honour of the memory of a deceased Irish patriot lady of the town, Mrs. Michael Ahearn, who died suddenly. This lady, since her youth, when she was familiarly called Kate O'Neill, possessed in full the qualities of her relatives, who gave many martyrs to the Irish cause since one of them, Father Peter O'Neill, was flogged in Youghal and then transported. There are many of the most prominent "hillside men" of 1867 now in the United States who would have suffered in some of the convict prisons of England were it not for her tact and influence with sheep-owners and sea captains in getting them off disguised. The funeral procession was the largest any person in Youghal ever witnessed, and its length of carriages and cars, which continued all the way to the burial-place at Ballymacoda, was over two miles.

Catherine Ahern
Mrs. Catherine Ahern, 37 years old, died at her home, 1,458 First avenue, New York, from the effects of rat poison, which it is said by her relatives she took accidentally. She was the wife of John Ahern, who is employed in a carriage factory, at 39 Wooster street. They have one son, 19 years of age. Mrs. Ahern was taken sick several weeks ago with a diarrheal disorder and she had been growing worse right along. Her sister Mary Becker has been taking care of her. The doctor attending her gave little hope for her recovery. About 2 o'clock this morning Mrs. Ahern awakened her sister. What followed was told this morning by Mary Becker. She said: “When my sister called me she said she had terrible pains in her body. She was in fearful agony. I immediately awakened Mr. Ahern, who went to their physician, Dr. Van Fleet of 158 East Eighty-first street.
“While her husband was gone Mrs. Ahern suddenly cried 'Mary. I must have taken the poison;' 'What poison?' I asked. Then she explained to me that she had mixed some rat poison with coffee last night to kill roaches with. She had the mixture in a cup which she stood in the sink in the kitchen. 'I must have taken that,' she cried. She could not tell when she took it, but it is supposed she got up to get a drink and in mistake swallowed the contents of the cup.
“When she realized her position she carried on fearfully. It was evident that she was dying. She begged me to save her. 'What will John do? What will you do, Mary?' she cried. It was a heart rending scene. She died at 2:30, before her husband came back with the doctor's.”
The dead woman's husband said that Dr. Van Fleet gave him some powders to give his wife but it was too late. Neither Mr. Ahern nor his sister in law believe that the woman took the poison with suicidal intent. They assert that it was an accident. The coroner will investigate the case.

Mistook Poison for Medicine
Mrs. Catherine Ahern, aged thirty-seven, died at her residence, 1,453 First Avenue, early yesterday morning from the effects of rat poison which, it is alleged, she took by mistake. Mrs. Ahern was taken ill several weeks ago and had her sister, Mrs. Mary Becker had been nursing her. About 2 o'clock yesterday morning Mrs. Becker was aroused by her sister, who declared herself to be in grate pain, caused, she said, by her having taken some poison she had mixed with coffee the night before and placed on her table to catch roaches. She had mistaken it for medicine.

Josephine Ahearn
An item in the Holyoke correspondence of the Springfield Republican on Monday stated that Mrs. A. H. Ryan received a cable message from China Saturday, announcing the death of her sister, Miss Josephine Ahearn, who has been traveling as a companion to some Americans in that country. She had been notified of the death of Mr. Ryan and was about to start for this country. Miss Ahearn was a Brattleboro girl and her many friends will be saddened to learn of her death. Her mother was killed by an accident in the Brattleboro railroad yard a few years ago, and her brother, Daniel Ahearn, who is also well remembered, died in Boston.

An Old Soldier Dead
Mr. John Ahern came to America from Ireland, in 1857, and settled at Milford, Mass., and the next year he was married to Mary Sweeney, from County Cork, Ireland. He joined the Davis guards of Milford and when the war broke out the guards went into the service and became a part of the 28th Mass. Reg't of Volunteers and for two years did good service for the Union. [He enlisted in Co. "K" and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant December 3, 1861, resigned and discharged September 23, 1862.] The Reg't was at Cambridge, Mass., then went to Governor's Island, N. Y., where they took ship to South Carolina. They were at Ft. Sumpter [sic], Ft. Pulaski and Newport News. In these engagements his regiment was all cut to pieces, but Mr. Ahern never received a scratch, being one of only 100 of the whole regiment to return home.

On his return from the army for a time some of the good luck that carried him through the hot battles must have left him, for he engaged in the boot business and lost heavily from fire. He then put all his savings in a bank and the bank failed. He then became foreman for C. H. Fargo & Co.'s Jackson, Mich., factory and remained with them for fifteen years. Three years ago he accepted a like position with Seltz, Schwab & Co., in their prison factory at Joliet, and remained with them until July 24, when he was taken ill. He came next day to his family in Chicago and on the 28th died from inflammation of the bowels.

Deceased was a brother of Mr. Daniel Ahern, of this city, and had many acquaintances, especially among members of the grand army, who will regret his demise.

Norah (O'Hern) Parker
The sad intelligence was received this morning of the death of Mrs. W. D. Parker, wife of Police Justice Parker, at Ashville, North Carolina.

About a year ago Mrs. Parker suffered an attack of the grip which settled upon her lungs. In time consumption developed and about the first of last September she went to Ashville, N. C., in search of health. Her eldest daughter Blanche, and a sister, Mrs. C. E. Baish, accompanied her. From the time of her arrival in Ashville her condition seemed to improve and her letters home were full of encouragement to the anxious relatives. About a week ago Mr. Parker and two younger daughters left for Ashville and Mrs. Baish came home. It was thought that all danger was past and that Mrs. Parker would return home in the spring restored to health. The news that she had died suddenly at 8 o'clock last evening was therefore a great shock to her relatives and many friends in this city.

Mrs. Parker was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick O'hern of South Olean. She was 31 years of age and had passed her entire life in Olean. She leaves three daughters, Blanche, Genevieve and Mildred, aged respectively 12, 10 and 7 years. She was the sister of the Rev. Father D. W. O'Hern, recently ordained to the Catholic priesthood; Edward P. O'Hern, a student at the West Point military academy; L. M. O'Hern, of Knapp's Creek; Frank, Lewis and Thomas O'Hern, Mrs. H. N. Webster, Mrs. C. E. Baish, and Misses Nellie and Gertrude O'Hern, all of Olean.

Mr. Parker and children left Ashville with the remains of the beloved wife and mother this afternoon. They will arrive in Olean Thursday and the funeral will probably be held Friday.

JAMES AHERN
Death of One of the Oldest Employes of the Pittsburg Shops
Was In Their Service for Over Thirty-Four Years
This morning at 8 o'clock, at his home, 23 Colerick street, occurred the death of James Ahern, one of the oldest and best known employes of the Pennsylvania company's shops in this city. His death resulted from stomach troubles, with which he has been afflicted for several years and which caused him to quit work July 28, 1892, since which time he has not been able, on this account to resume his position at the shops. Last Thursday he was obliged to take to his bed and he continued to grow worse until his death at the hour mentioned above.

Mr. Ahern has for years had charge of one of the steam hammers in the blacksmith department of the Pittsburg shops, and he was, with the exception of O. E. Bradway, the foreman of the brass department, and Charles Lincoln, of the roundhouse, the oldest employe in point of service connected with the company in this city, having entered their employ on May 28, 1858, and remained with them until the beginning of his sickness.

The deceased was born in the city of Cork, Ireland, on the 16th of October, 1823, and came to this continent in 1845, while he was a young man, landing at St. John, New Brunswick. While crossing the ocean he was taken with the cholera, which was epidemic at that time, but recovered before the ship reached land.

At St. John he secured employment and worked for a few years when he went to Concord, New Hampshire, where he followed teaming, being in the employ of the Shakers. At Concord, on the 28th of May, 1847, Mr. Ahern married Mary Coleman, a young lady of that city. He remained in New Hampshire until 1855, when he concluded to come west and, with his wife, he started for Indiana, making the trip by way of the lakes and the canal. He arrived in this city on the 29th of April, 1855, the day of the double hanging in this city of Kieffer and Madden, an event that the old gentleman frequently talked about with The Sentinel reporter.

Soon after he arrived in this city he took employment in the foundry of Jones & Bass, but left them to take a position as blacksmith at the Wabash shops and, after a few years, on May 28, 1858, going to the Pittsburg shops. He entered the blacksmith department and remained there until the begining of his illness, two years ago, making him a continuous employe of the company for thirty-four years.

Mr. Ahern leaves a wife and three adopted children. His brother, seven years older than himself, resides in Concord, N.H. He is a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic church.

B., in 1846. On the voyage he was attacked with cholera, and was critically ill for months. At Concord, N. H., in 1847, he married Mary Coleman, and in April, 1855, moved to Fort Wayne. He came to this city from Toledo in a canal boat. He entered the service of the Bass foundry and remained with the firm until 1858, when he secured employment in the Pittsburg shops. He worked there continuously until 1892, when he resigned owing to ill-health. Death was due to a complication of diseases arising from disorders of the digestive organs. MOURNED BY MANY FRIENDS
———
Death of Pat O'Hearn a Shock to His Associates.
The brief announcement in the World-Herald yesterday morning of the death of Pat O'Hearn caused considerable grief among railroad men throughout the wets. He came to Omaha from Marion, Ia., eighteen years ago and secured employment in the Union Pacific yards as a switchman. He was then brakeman, yardmaster and freight conductor, and was one of the best known men in the west. He gave up railroading four years ago and went into the saloon business with ex-Detective Horrigan, but they soon severed the partnership and went into business for themselves.

O'Hearn was a great character, in his way. He was a big, good-natured man, and fond of joking, and there are scores of good stories told of him. The immediate cause of death is said to be from the effects of a shot. About three years ago a drunken man shot him, and his life was despaired of but his rugged constitution pulled him through, but he has never been well since. He had an operation performed a few weeks ago and he rallied, and it was believed that he would regain his health, but he suffered a relapse which terminated in his death.

The funeral will occur this morning from St. Patrick's church. The interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery. He leaves a widow and one son.

DEATH CALLS A MOST HIGHLY RESPECTED CITIZEN FROM OUR MIDST
On Saturday, November 27th, 1897, occurred the death of Mr. Garrett Ahern. He had been in poor health since July, but was not confined to his bed. On Thanksgiving day he seemed cheerful and enjoyed his Thanksgiving dinner and was in good spirits until after 1:p.m. When his left side became paralyzed shortly after 1:00, he died from the effects Saturday morning at 10 o'clock.

He was almost 63 years of age and he resided in Minneota for the past 14 years. He leaves a wife and ten children to mourn his loss. The deceased was honored and respected by all who knew him and by his death there is a vacancy made, which is sorely felt. He had a kind and loving disposition, a cheerful word and a pleasant smile for everyone. Having a high moral character, he deplored everything low and degrading and tried by example and conversations to instill the same feeling into the hearts of those with whom he conversed. Being well informed on any of the topics of the day, his advice was often sought and gladly accepted by his acquaintances. Of a religious state of mind, he had a great purity of thought; so virtuous, so peaceful with an unending desire to please his Creator. And regularly as night drew her curtain around, he gathered his household in family worship and never neglected this devotion. His grief-stricken wife and family have the heart-felt sympathy of their many friends in their sad bereavement.

The funeral took place on Monday and, although the day was very cold, the funeral procession was large. All seemed anxious to pay the last sad rites to one whom they loved so dear. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father Van Den Heovel in St. Edwards Catholic Church in Minneota, of which Mr. Ahern was a most faithful and prominent member. The pall bearers were: Mr. Walsh, Mr. McDonald, Mr. Moughan, Mr. Langar, Mr. Dwyer, and Mr. Bolton, all intimate friends of the deceased. [see also: Garrett F. Ahern]

Michael J. Ahearn
The West end yesterday afternoon lost on of its best-known citizens in the death of Michael J. Ahearn, who died at the Massachusetts general hospital after a lingering illness. Mr. Ahearn for the past 20 years had been among the prominent patrons of athletics and rowing in this city, and by his efforts accomplished much good for the elevation of sports in general.
He was born and bred at the West end, and first saw the light of day at the old family home on Brighton st.
He attended the public schools. Early in life he engaged in business. In 1864 he entered partnership with Capt. John J. Coffey, which was continued, under the firm name of Coffey and Ahearn, on Leverett st., up to his death.
Some 25 years ago he was quite active in aquatics, and among those he raced with in single sculls were Fred Plaisted, Driscoll and Creed of Chelsea. He also for a time led all local oarsmen in single working boats.
He was among the original members of the present West End boat club, and for several years was on of the crews that represented that pioneer organization. He also rowed in several picked crews in matched races. He was very successful. He was the soul of honor and a favorite with all who knew him. The same may be said of him in his business dealings.
He dropped out of active rowing about 12 years ago, but continued his interest in the sport, as well as in athletics in general. In his time he also assisted in developing many men who have won distinction on the athletic field. Among those he had backed during the past two years is George Tinckler, the great Irish sprinter.
The cause of Mr. Ahearn's death was inflammation of the stomach.
The deceased leaves a wife but no children. The funeral will be held Thursday morning at his late residence, 142 Leverett st., with services at St. Joseph's church, Chambers st.
