Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions:
Michael Adrian, a Private of Company D, 27 Regiment Iowa Infy Volunteers was enrolled on the 14 day of Aug 1862, at Guttenberg, 3 years and mustered in with Co. Sept. 13, 1862. On roll from Oct 3/62 to Dec 31/62 -- first muster roll on file-- he is reported present. Same to June 30/65. He was mustered out with the Co. at Clinton, Iowa, Aug 8/65, a Pvt.
Regt was in action at Pleasant Hill, LA, April 9/64.
The record of this office furnished no evidence of wound alleged, neither do they afford any additional information in the case.
Casualty lists do not cover June 1864.

It is certified, that the records of this office show that Michael Adrian was enlisted as a Private in Company D, Twenty Seventh Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry on the 14th day of August 1862 at Guttenburg, Iowa by Capt. D. E. Meyers. and was mustered into the United States services as such for the period of three years on 3rd day of October 1862, at Dubuque, by Capt. Pierce, U.S.A. Mustering Officer, and that the said Michael Adrian was mustered out August 8th, 1865 at Clinton, Iowa by reason ......(Note: the rest of the line is unreadable.)

The above entitled action having been duly reached in its order upon the calendar and coming on for a hearing upon the application of the plaintiff for judgment therein upon failure of the defendant to answer or appear in said action, upon due proof taken in open court, the court finds all of the material allegations of plaintiff's complaint true and proven, and it appearing to the satisfaction of the court from due proof of service on file herein that the summons in said action were personally served upon said defendant during the month of September, 1901, and it further appearing from the affidavit of plaintiff's attorney on file herein that more than twenty days have elapsed since the service of the summons herein upon the defendant and that no answer nor demurrer to the plaintiff's complain herein was served upon plaintiff's attorney or received at the address mentioned in the summons herein, and that said defendant has in no manner appeared in said action and is now in default.
The Court finds from the evidence taken herein in open court: That the parties hereto were duly married to each as in the complaint herein alleged; that both of said parties have continuously resided in the state of Wisconsin for more than one year next preceding the time of the commencement of this action; that the said parties have lived entirely separate and apart from each other for the space of more than five (5) years next preceding the time of the commencement of this action, and that sufficient reasons exist for the entry of a decree of divorce herein and that the plaintiff should be divorced from the defendant and her name changed to Catherine Frederick, her name prior to her marriage with the defendant, and that sufficient reasons exist for the entry of this judgment and decree and that it is proper so to do.
Now, therefore, on motion of W. H. Stafford, attorney for the said plaintiff, it is ordered, adjudged and decreed that the plaintiff be and she is hereby divorced from the defendant, and that the bonds of matrimony heretofore existing between the plaintiff and defendant be and the same are hereby dissolved, and the plaintiff's name be and the same is hereby changed to Catherine Frederick, her name prior to her marriage to the defendant.
Made and signed on this 19th day of November, 1901, a day of and during the General 1901 term of said Court.

D., one thousand nine hundred and twelve personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and State aforesaid, Michael Adrian, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 70 years of age and a resident of Town of Cleveland, County of Chippewa, State of Wisconsin; and that he is the identical person who was enrolled at Guttenburg, Iowa, under the name of Michael Adrian, on the 14 day of August 1862, as Private, in Company D., Twenty Seventh Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry in the service of the United States, in the Civil War, and was honorably discharged at Clinton, Iowa, on the 8 day of August 1865.
That he was not employed in the military or naval service of the United States otherwise than as stated above. That his personal description at enlistment was as follows: Height: 5 feet 3 inches; complexion, dark; color of eyes, blue; color of hair, dark; that his occupation was Farmer; that he was born November 16, 1841 at ___________.
That his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follows: Has lived in Chippewa Co, Wis. continually since the War.
That he is now a pensioner. He is a pensioner at present (542590).
That he make this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the Act of February 6, 1907.
That his post-office address is Holcomb, County of Chippewa, State of Wisconsin.

Answer: Yes, she was married to Mr. Jim Graham. He died 5 day of January at Chippewa Falls, Wis. He was just a labor man. Mr. Jim Graham the first man. Mr. Michael Adrian the 2nd.

On this 1st day of March 1923, personally appeared Elizabeth Adrian, before me the undersigned, who makes the following declaration as an application for pension under the provisions of the act of Congress approved May 1, 1920.
That she is 56 years of age, that she was born January 15, 1867 at Richland County, Wisc., and that her Post-0ffice address is Cornell, Wisc.
That she is the widow of Michael Adrian who enlisted as a private at Guttenberg, Iowa, under the name of Michael Adrian, in Co. D., 27th Iowa Infantry Vol. and was honorably discharged August 8, 1865, having served ninety days or more, or was discharged for, or died in service of the United States of a disability incurred in the service in the line of duty, during the Civil War, and who died January 29, 1923, at Cornell, Wisc. That he also served in (none) and that, except as herein stated, said soldier (or sailor) was not employed in the military or naval service of the United States.
That she was married to said soldier January 11, 1888 at (rest is blank)
That she was not divorced from the soldier (or sailor) and that she has not remarried since his death.
That the following are are the only children of the soldier (or sailor) who are now living and are under sixteen years of age. (If he left no children under sixteen years of age, the claimant should so state): None -- all married.
That she has not heretofore applied for pension; that said soldier (or sailor) was a pensioner, the number of his pension certificate being 542590.

H. R. 9978, Elizabeth M. Adrian, aged 61 years, whose post-office address is R.F.D. No. 1, Box 101, Racine, Wis., is the widow of Michael Adrian, late a private, Company D., Twenty-seventh Regiment Iowa Infantry, from August 14, 1862, to August 8, 1865, who was a pensioner under certificate No. 542590, at the rate of $50 per month and who died January 29, 1923.
He and this claimant were married January 11, 1888. She has been denied pension as the soldier's widow on the ground that she cannot be accepted as his legal widow under existing laws, for the reason the soldier had a living undivorced wife at the time that he and this claimant contracted marriage. Soldier's first wife secured a divorce from him November 19, 1901.
From the date of their marriage the soldier and claimant lived and cohabited as husband and wife and were recognized as such for a period of 35 years. She bore him seven children. Under the circumstances your committee is disposed to give her a pensionable status.
Medical evidence shows she requires the aid and attendance of another person by reason of myocarditis and senility. She has no property and no income. No one is legally bound to her support. It is recommended her name be placed on the pension roll at the rate of $30 a month.

Approved Mar 4, 1927.Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled. That the Secretary of the Interior be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to place on the pension roll, subject to the provisions and limitations of the pension laws--
The name of Elizabeth M. Adrian, widow of Michael Adrian, late of Company D, Twenty-seventh Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and pay her a pension at the rate of $30 per month.
I hereby certify that the above is a true copy of that part of the act relating to the beneficiary named, as it appears in copy certified by Department and on file in Law Division.
