Calkins, Stephen B. There is a listing for Stephen B. Calkins under Company B, 27th Iowa Infantry on Fold3, (under both the pension index record and the Widows Pension records). He is NOT listed on the 27th Iowa Roster. As I read through the widow's pension record, I found that he enlisted Sept. 27th, 1861 in Company B, 11th Iowa and died June 13, 1862 (which is before the 27th Iowa was even formed). There is a statement by the Adjutant General's Office dated Feb. 28, 1863 that said "Stephen B. Calkins was enrolled on the 27th day of Sept. 1861 at Davenport, in Co. B., 11th Regiment Iowa and was mustered in as a private on Sept 27, 1861 at Davenport, in Co. B., 27th Regiment of Iowa." There are several statements saying he was in the 27th Iowa. But a statement from his captain says he enlisted in the 11th Iowa. From the Pension Records: He was described as age 26, 5 feet, 9 1/2 inches, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, born in Dutchess County, New York. He married Melinda McBee on Nov. 9, 1856 in Jones County, Iowa. They had two children: Laura Calkins and Alphonse Calkins. Melinda Calkins died in March, 1860. After the death of Stephen B. Calkins, Calvin Calkins was appointed guardian of the children. I think someone confused Stephen B. Calkins date of enlistment (Sept. 27th) with the Company (27th Iowa). I am adding it here, simply to explain why he is listed under the 27th Iowa.
