1850 Federal United States Census - Womack

Present Count: 2,258 Individuals in the Population Schedules.

Introduction

I started this project with the idea that a single web page with every person with Womack surname (or variations thereof) in the 1850 Census would be very useful in trying to grasp the family as a whole. I estimated there were about 1000 individuals with the Womack surname living in the United States in 1850. So far I have found over 2200.

I hope visitors to this page are able to learn something about their Womack ancestors. As always, verify all information yourself. If this is your first visit, please read the section below to help understand this data.

Where They Were in 1850: There were Womacks in every Southern state except South Carolina. In addition, there were several Womacks in Illinois and Indiana. There were smaller numbers of Womacks in Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, and other Northern and Western States. In 1850, the United States consisted of 31 states, four territories (Utah, New Mexico, Minnesota, and Oregon), and the District of Columbia. There were no Womacks in DC or the four territories. I found no Womacks in any of the New England states (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine). In addition, there were no Womacks in the following states: Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, South Carolina

Data in Population Schedule

The 1850 Census consisted of a form with several columns. I abstracted most of the columns, but not all.

  1. Line Number - The form consisted of 42 lines numbered 1 through 42. A household might continue onto a second page, so you may see line numbers go up to 42, then start again with 1 in the same household. Skipped numbers indicate that there was a person in the household whose surname was not Womack.
  2. Last Name - or surname. Only persons with the Womack surname were included!! This is another reason you should look at the original records, to see both the other persons in the household, as well as neighbors.
  3. Given Name - written exactly as the enumerator wrote it. Thus, if you are looking for William, you should also search for "Wm", a common abbreviation for William. Suffixes such as "Sr" and "Jr" are with the given name.
  4. Age - for children under 1 year, you will see a number followed by m, for example "6m" mean 6 months old.
  5. Gender - M or F for male or female. In some instances, this was obviouly wrong, but I left it as is.
  6. Race - W for White, B for Black, M for Mulatto.
  7. Occupation - If the enumerator left this blank for a male head of household, I put the word "blank". I also substituted "Farmer" for several things enumerator wrote, including "Farming" and "Far."
  8. Real Estate Value - the value in dollars of the persons real estate. If the enumerator left this blank for a male head of household, I put 0 (zero).
  9. Place of Birth - the state or country where the person was born. Occasionally, enumerators also gave a county of birth. I translated whatever the enumerator wrote into the modern two-letter state abbreviation.
  10. Notes - mostly used when a Womack individual was living with a non-Womack household head to indicate with whom the Womack was living. Also, any other explanations or interesting comments.

In any column, you may see a question mark ?, which indicates I was unsure what the enumerator wrote.

For each household, I included the state, county (parish in Louisiana), township, microfilm roll number, page number, and household number. This should be sufficient to easily locate these people in the actual records.

Methodology

I made heavy use of my subscriptions to Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com. Mostly, I used the census indexes as Ancestry.com, and looked at the images at Genealogy.com. Occasionally, an image was unreadable on one site or the other, so I compared the images on both sites.

Ancestry.com has both Soundex searches and wildcard searches. A wildcard is an asterisk used to represent zero to many possible letters. In general, I searched each state as follows:

  1. Wom* wildcard search (in other words, every name that begins with letters "Wom")
  2. Wam* wildcard search
  3. Worm* wildcard search
  4. Warm* wildcard search
  5. Womack soundex seach
  6. Wormack soundex search

This found most of the Womacks, but not all. I also looked at Womacks found by other researchers at WGN, particularly the list of indexes by Roger Womack and Sam Womack. The Ancestry.com indexes are based upon the Advanced Indexing Systems (AIS) Census Index books, which I know from experience are full of mistakes. The indexes at Ancestry.com are missing the entire county of Rankin, Mississippi, for example.

The Womack surname and its variations can easily be confused with other surname, including Warnock, Warnick, Winnick, Warman, Warmoth, Wilmoth, Warrick, Warwick. I some instances, I decided that persons indexed with these surnames were actually Womacks. In a few other instances, I saw that persons indexed as Womacks were actually some other surname - see They Were Not Really Womacks, Part II - Indexing Mistakes. When in doubt, I usually included the persons with a note as to the other interpretation of the name. See my Notes for names I skipped by state and county.

For those interested in the technical side, I entered this data into a Microsoft Excel 97 spreadsheet. I then wrote a simple C++ program (I am a computer programmer) to pull the data from the spreadsheet, sort it and do some simple processing, and write it to a XML format which I created. I then used an XSL stylesheet to transform the XML into an HTML file. I try to use pretty sparse HTML, preferring to put most of the presentation into a cascading style sheet (CSS).

African-American Womacks and Slave Schedules

Most African-American Womacks were slaves of white Womacks in 1850. There were a few free black Womacks, including a couple in Clark Co, IN, and a woman in Hampshire Co, VA.

The following records are incomplete, because I need to see the Slave Schedule Indexes for the following states: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. The actual census has the age, gender, and race (black or mulatto) of each slave, but not his or her name. I included just the total number of slaves owned by each slave owner. Page numbers are inconsistent on the slave schedules, so I usually have a couple different numbers, including the Genealogy.com image number.

Mortality Schedules

The Mortality Census was suppossed to list every person who died in the year previous to the census. It falls far short of that, probably because of laxy enumerators and people not wanting to talk about relatives who died recently. I have not seen the actual Mortality Census records, just the indexes at Ancestry.com.

They Were Not Really Womacks - Enumerator Mistakes

Census enumerators made a lot of mistakes, either when they were making their rounds, or when they copied the census. There were three copies of the 1850 Census made by hand - see this article.

Sometimes the enumerator confused Womack with a similar name. Sometimes a Womack man married a widow, and her children by her previous marriage were accidentily listed as Womacks. Here are some enumerator mistakes:

They Were Not Really Womacks, Part II - Indexing Mistakes

Occasionally, the people who indexed the census mistook a name for Womack:

Missing Womacks

I'll start this list with the ones I know were missed in 1850. If you have any others, write me at robertburke@juno.com.
