In June of 1999 we went to Adams County, Illinois, to research my Pearce Family. We got there on a holiday weekend so could not get to the library until the next day. We began searching for the cemetery and thought that we had possibly found it. Hoyt went back the next day and cleaned part of the cemetery off while I was at the library. He copied the inscriptions on the stones and then we realized that it was the wrong cemetery. After finding a plat book, we were able to locate the Pearce home place where the Pearce Cemetery or "Burying Ground" was located. Late on the afternoon before we were to leave the next day, we found the cemetery. We knew that it was the right cemetery because of the other Pearce graves. The Cemetery Book said there was a stone for William, but we could not find it in the tall grass. Hoyt walked the cemetery until he found the tombstone that had fallen over. He scraped off all the dirt and took the little bit of water we had for drinking to clean the stone off. I really thought he was an angel to find my greatgreatgrandfather's tombstone. After I received the pictures back I see that the trees in the background have provided "wings" for him! How appropriate. He was certainly my "angel" that day.
