Two ancient names connected with the Western Islands of Scotland and, in particular, with the Isle of Mull are Maclean and Beaton. The Macleans were a tribe of Celtic warriors that traced their origins to Gillean of the Battle Axe and the Beatons were a family of hereditary medieval physicians whose roots reached back to Celtic Ireland. By the close of the 18th century, the Maclean chiefs were gone from Mull and and the last of the Beaton doctors had died. The pride of those traditions, however, continued in Donald McLean and Sarah Beaton and their descendants whose family history is celebrated here.
