Cemetery Trustee Kenneth Dettmering, editor

On April 26, 2003, using the 1998 reading of the cemetery, I walked the cemetery to make additions and corrections to the reading. I found that, in general, the prior reading had one major fault: although the names of the people buried on or reserving plots were rather accurate, the order in which the graves were reported is often backward from the way in which one approaches the plot to look at the stones. I have attempted to correct this fault.
Though there were factual errors in the prior reading, they were few and will be noted with parenthetical remarks.
The reading from 1998 failed to take into account that the name on the cemetery's plot map might reflect only the name of the owner of the plot, or the name of the owner along with the name of the person buried there. This is especially possible where a child is buried and the name of the parent appears on the map along with the name of the child. The old "Children's Section" (in Section B) is especially vulnerable to this phenomenon, but without time to study the congregation's burial records, it would be near impossible to untangle the question of who is buried in a plot that seems to have an adult's name on it but is clearly marked as a child's grave when only the adult owner of the plot is known by name. Again, I have not re-read the "Children's Section." The stones there are for the most part unreadable, and no additional burials will be made in that section.
On June 15, 2003, I consulted with Trustee Ken Dettmering and improved the accuracy of my reading of Section D, adding two new sites that had not been there in April. Sections A, B and C are, therefore, as accurate as possible to April 26, 2003, and Section D is accurate through July, 2003.

The July 12, 1998 reading had uncovered some important discoveries made by consulting the map of the cemetery. I repeat them here.

1. The cemetery appears to consist of 3 sections. It is, in fact, in 4 sections, there being no driveway between sections B and C.

2. The plots in the cemetery are numbered in a serpentine fashion rather than in straight lines, excepting Section D, which is numbered consecutively with each row numbered from south to north (right to left) rather than north to south (left to right), and the numbering beginning nearest the road, rather than nearest the creek as with older sections. In addition, the older sections A, B, and C seem to themselves to consist of more than one sub-section, with row numbering systems changing roughly in mid-section.

Section A, easily identifiable as the northern-most section, has always been identified correctly. The plots are numbered in a serpentine fashion, beginning at the right to left (south to north). It appears that the oldest part of the cemetery is at the east, defined by the course of Spring Creek. However, rather than reading the cemetery from that perspective, I have read it from the road back to the creek, as has been customary. The section is bounded on the north by a driveway, dividing St. John's Cemetery from Woodland Cemetery.

Sections B & C - The section assumed to be Section B in the past is in reality two sections, Sections B and C. The dividing line between these two sections is not obvious since it is NOT marked by a drive. The division, however, is the source of previous difficulties in reading the cemetery; the plots in Section C do not continue in a straight line from those of Section B, and attempts to read this as one section have not been entirely successful.

Children's Section - In addition, Section B contains an area in which numerous children are buried. There were wide-spread deaths due to an epidemic, according to older citizens of the town. Some families lost all their children in a matter of days. These mostly are buried together in plots much smaller, and rows numbered independently of the rest of Section B. Attempts in the past to read this section in line with the remainder of Section B have failed to produce a readable document. There are a few adult grave sites in this section; possibly they died during the same epidemic and because speed of burial was of uppermost concern they were buried in this section, or those plots had already been reserved by those adults.

Section D - This is a new area of the cemetery, at the moment the southern-most section, subject to entirely different rules than the older sections. Burials in this section take place in the next available plot. The only reservations allowed in this section are for the surviving spouse of the deceased; the next plot may be reserved. (This rule has been broken on at least two occasions, surviving parents having been allowed to reserve two spaces for themselves upon the death of a child.) All markers in this section are flush to the ground, and all plots are of a uniform size. There are two instances in which there is indication that a child MIGHT be buried across the foot of two plots reserved for the parents.

3. The cemetery's plot map and the actual placement of a grave do not always agree. In the event of disagreement, I have used the actual placement of the headstone as the location of the grave. In this addition, I have added two graphics to assist in identifying two troublesome plot arrangements in Section B. The original map as copied by me is slightly in error with regard to these plots.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE AWARE that the presence of a person's name in this list is not an indication that the person is deceased; it may be only an indication that the person has a plot reserved, whether in a plot marked by a spouse's marker, or in a plot containing no marker whatsoever. It may also indicate only that the person is the owner of a plot on which he or she does not intend to be buried.
It is also important that the user of this document realize that it is not a tombstone transcription project; there may be more or less information on the tombstone (or there may be no tombstone) than is included in this document as I have worked from a combination of the actual cemetery, the official cemetery plot map, which includes reservations for persons not deceased, and incorporated information from family files, especially in the parenthetical remarks.
A source frequently mentioned in parenthetical remarks is "Krumwiede Family Records." This refers to a collection of records beginning with a project to collect information begun in either 1934 or 1940. The descendants of Heinrich Konrad Krumwiede (the first Trustee of the cemetery, according to a congregational history published in 1920) and his brother August Krumwiede began meeting annually in 1934 for a reunion. In 1940, it was suggested that an official history of the family should be written, and that at the 1941 reunion, attendees should bring with them transcriptions of any Bible records, diaries, etc., containing dates of birth, marriages, weddings, etc., in their possession. Together with these documents regarding ancestors, each person was to be prepared to write down the applicable information regarding their own families. The resulting book has been kept until this date and still is presented for updates to the family on the first Sunday in August of each year, but has been transcribed from the original. The original has been deposited with the Iroquois County Genealogical Society, Watseka, Illinois, where it can be consulted. Copies exist in the possession of the president of the Krumwiede Family Reunion and in the possession of this compiler. Dates noted to come from this source and occurring before 1940 are "tertiary" source information. Dates after 1940 from this source are more likely to have been recorded within one year of the occurrence. Many are supported by other information.

(According to Kenneth Luhrsen, son of Alfred and Leola Weisenbarn Luhrsen, this girl, his sister, was born in Dowagiac, Michigan and lived six hours. Her body was brought to Buckley for burial on the Weisenbarn family plot. I have placed her next to her Uncle Martin simply based on the dates. It is the most likely location of her grave.)
William Weisenbarn 1873-1951
(This stone originally stated that his year of birth is 1870. Upon reading in July, 1998, it was seen that the numeral 0 had been filled in and the numeral 3 carved in its place. By 2003, the filling has fallen out and both numerals show, making it impossible for someone new to viewing the stone to know which is correct.)

A photo copy of the records from the church can be seen in "A History and Genealogy of the Family of Frederick and Sophia Hilgendorf, compiled by Maynard D. Childrens' Area

This section is read from north to south and from west to east. The section begins at row 15B and continues to row 21B, and has its own numbering system. There are several adult gravesites in this section. The section was not designed to hold only children, but many children died in several epidemics and the term "Children's Area" came into common usage. The dates of death of the adults suggest that the adults might have died in the same epidemics and been buried in this area for speed and convenince. Adult gravesites have been marked with an * for quick reference. However, the name of the adult appearing on the map MIGHT indicate only the name of the plot owner and a child of that person might be buried there. In the Sprehe family, it seems certain that an elder in the family saw to the purchase of plots for the dying children in the family. Sprehe family historians are not certain of the identities of those buried there in all cases. This section was NOT re-read in 1998 or in 2003. Spaces without names are either "unoccupied" or no tombstone was placed and no name for any burial at that space is known.

(The cemetery map seemed to read "Dofftner." In this case, I have decided to use the name given in the 1983 reading, as it seemed to be more logical in its spelling. It is, however, possible that the name should be "Deffner.")

Row 5

Louis Hartke
"Louis, son of L & M Hartke, Oct 1880-Dec 1880"
(For this site, and the one reading "August Hartke," the 1983 reading indicates HECHT. Either the 1983 reading is incorrect, or the cemetery map is incorrect. Either is possible, since both surnames are widespread in the area and Clara HECHT was married to Elmer HARTKE. Also, the baptismal records at St. John's Lutheran Church identify the person with this date of birth as the son of Wilhelm Hartke and Mary Krumwiede. Possibly the first initial of the father's name is not transcribed correctly.)

David Trusheim d Aug 20, 1879, age 1-2-2
