SCHLEMMER
The Passenger List from the Ship "Louis
Phillippe" that the Schelemmer's came to America and has listed
traveling with them a "Jacob Schlemmer" aged 44. Looking
at the ages, he is most likely a brother of John George
Schlemmer.
In 1846, John George Schlemmer and his wife Louisa Feasher
left Grosssteinhausen, Bavaria, Germany with a team of 12 horses and 6
kids; Katie, Fred, Henry, Margaret, George, and Jacob. (4 kids had died in Germany) They traveled
overland through France to the port of Havre.
They traveled on a ship called the "Louis
Phillippe" for 32 days and landed at the port of New York on December
9, 1846. The trip was very hard. Each family had to prepare their
own meals on the open fires on the deck. Also on the ship with the
Schlemmer/s was a family by the name of "Reinchen", cousins to
John George Schlemmer. The Reinchen/s had a son by the name of Emil
Reinchen, the same age as Jacob, who became ill on the journey and was nursed
back to health by Louisa Feasher.
Upon reaching New York, they traveled by rail to Buffalo. They
stayed in Buffalo for about four weeks, at which time John George Schlemmer
traveled overland to Punxsutawney. He got together with Jacob Dunmire and
traveled by wagon back to Buffalo to get the family. They all left Buffalo
by wagon on January 16, 1847 and arrived in Punxsutawney on February 1, 1847.
They lived
with Jacob Dunmire for the remainder of winter, then purchased the Dunmire farm.
The Dunmire farm is next to the George Armstrong farm outside
Punxsutawney. After arriving to the US, they had an additional 2
children, Mary and Phillip.
John George Schlemmer later sold the farm and bought another farm in Canoe
Creek. After his wife died, he sold that farm and moved to a farm in Stark
County, Ohio to live with his son Jacob (the farm is about 5 miles south east of
Canton, Ohio.) He lived there until his death.
