CREED

CREED

Raphael (Ralph) Creed, probably a "ship's carpenter" on the ship in which Francis Hawkwood arrived in Virginia, was our immigrant ancestor in this family. He was married to Grace ___?___, and died in Surry County between June and September of 1668. We know nothing of Grace's dates of birth and death except that she probably survived her husband, dying in Surry County before March 29, 1676.

Raphael left a will leaving his estate to his son William; and if he should die, to the youngest daughter, Mary. We have this information about their children:

  •   Maudlin Creed (about 1645 to 1670) married Marmaduke Beckwith. Their children were Elizabeth, Jonathan, and Grace (who married William Lucas). After her husband died, Maudlin married twice more: to Edward Oliver and John Warren.
  •   Elizabeth was probably born in England and died in Surry County before January 3, 1676. Her husband was Francis Hawkwood.
  •   Jolindy (Joane) married Noah Barefoot.
  •   William's 1688 Surry County will left his estate to two brothers-in-law, Noah Barefoot (husband of his sister Jolindy) and David Andrews, Jr. (husband of his sister Mary).
  •   Mary Creed was married to John Flood, Jr. and David Andrews, Jr. The children of her first marriage were John, Jane, and Elizabeth (who married Nicholas Smith).
